  • On the Origins of the Gothic Novel: from Old Norse to Otranto
This extract is taken from the author's original manuscript and has not been edited. The definitive, published, version of record is available here: https:// www.palgrave.com/gb/book/9781137465030 and https://link.springer.com/book/10.1057/9781137465047. Please be aware that if third party material (e.g. extracts, figures, tables from other sources) forms part of the material you wish to archive you will need additional clearance from the appropriate rights holders. On the origins of the Gothic novel: From Old Norse to Otranto Martin Arnold A primary vehicle for the literary Gothic in the late eighteenth to early nineteen centuries was past superstition. The extent to which Old Norse tradition provided the basis for a subspecies of literary horror has been passed over in an expanding critical literature which has not otherwise missed out on cosmopolitan perspectives. This observation by Robert W. Rix (2011, 1) accurately assesses what may be considered a significant oversight in studies of the Gothic novel. Whilst it is well known that the ethnic meaning of ‘Gothic’ originally referred to invasive, eastern Germanic, pagan tribes of the third to the sixth centuries AD (see, for example, Sowerby 2000, 15-26), there remains a disconnect between Gothicism as the legacy of Old Norse literature and the use of the term ‘Gothic’ to mean a category of fantastical literature. This essay, then, seeks to complement Rix’s study by, in certain areas, adding more detail about the gradual emergence of Old Norse literature as a significant presence on the European literary scene. The initial focus will be on those formations (often malformations) and interpretations of Old Norse literature as it came gradually to light from the sixteenth century onwards, and how the Nordic Revival impacted on what is widely considered to be the first Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto (1764) by Horace Walpole (1717-97).

  • Clan Dunbar 2014 Tour of Scotland in August 14-26, 2014: Journal of Lyle Dunbar
Clan Dunbar 2014 Tour of Scotland in August 14-26, 2014: Journal of Lyle Dunbar Introduction The Clan Dunbar 2014 Tour of Scotland from August 14-26, 2014, was organized for Clan Dunbar members with the primary objective to visit sites associated with the Dunbar family history in Scotland. This Clan Dunbar 2014 Tour of Scotland focused on Dunbar family history at sites in southeast Scotland around Dunbar town and Dunbar Castle, and in the northern highlands and Moray. Lyle Dunbar, a Clan Dunbar member from San Diego, CA, participated in both the 2014 tour, as well as a previous Clan Dunbar 2009 Tour of Scotland, which focused on the Dunbar family history in the southern border regions of Scotland, the northern border regions of England, the Isle of Mann, and the areas in southeast Scotland around the town of Dunbar and Dunbar Castle. The research from the 2009 trip was included in Lyle Dunbar’s book entitled House of Dunbar- The Rise and Fall of a Scottish Noble Family, Part I-The Earls of Dunbar, recently published in May, 2014. Part I documented the early Dunbar family history associated with the Earls of Dunbar from the founding of the earldom in 1072, through the forfeiture of the earldom forced by King James I of Scotland in 1435. Lyle Dunbar is in the process of completing a second installment of the book entitled House of Dunbar- The Rise and Fall of a Scottish Noble Family, Part II- After the Fall, which will document the history of the Dunbar family in Scotland after the fall of the earldom of Dunbar in 1435, through the mid-1700s, when many Scots, including his ancestors, left Scotland for America.

CrossOver Vol. 1 No. 1, June 2021 Journal of Adaptation Studies INTERTEXTUALITY OF THE SAGAS OF RAGNAR LODBROK BY BEN WAGGONER AND ITS TV-SERIES VERSION: VIKINGS Restu Wahyuning Asih TribunnewsWiki, Indonesia [email protected] Abstract Mythical and historical stories were rapidly growing to be adapted into movies. However, intertextuality is proven to be an obstacle in the adaptation process since adaptation might trigger losses on the meaning of the original works. Addressing this issue, this descriptive qualitative research attempts to reveal (1) the types of intertextuality found from the Sagas of Ragnar Lodbrok by Ben Waggoner and its TV-Series Version: Vikings through the characterization of Ragnar Lodbrok,(2) how intertextuality is presented in the Sagas of Ragnar Lodbrok by Ben Waggoner and its TV-Series Version: Vikings through the characterization of Ragnar Lodbrok. Intertextuality theory by Fitzsimmons (2013) and characterization theory by Bernardo (2015) were applied to answer these problems. The data of this research were words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and visualizations, considered to reflect the characters of the story. The data were taken from the Sagas of Ragnar Lodbrok and Vikings TV series. The data were analyzed by employing Spradley’s componential analysis. Symbolic Interactionism approach was applied in this research to reveal how characters were treated as a symbolic meaning in intertextual domain. Derived from the analysis, this research unveils three types of intertextuality namely optional, obligatory, and accidental. The data shows that optional intertextuality is the most common type of intertextuality found from this research. Characterization of Ragnar was intertextually presented through thirteen manners or types with what others say and physical visualization as the recurring types.

Hudson From Senchus to histore: Traditions of King Duncan I The kings of Scotland prior to the reign of Malcolm III, popularly known as Malcolm Carunore (Malcolm "Bighead") have rarely been con sidered in connection with Scottish historical literature. Macbeth, largely due to Shakespeare's drama, has been the exception. For the medieval period alone, Nora Chadwick's examination of the Macbeth legend showed that a number of literary traditions, both native and foreign, can be detected in later medieval literature. 1 Macbeth was not alone in hav ing a variety of legends cluster about his memory; his historical and liter ary contemporary Duncan earned his share of legends too. This can be seen in a comparison of the accounts about Duncan preserved in historical literature, such as the Chroniea Gentis Seotorum of John of Fordun and the Original Chronicle of Scotland by Andrew of Wyntoun.2 Such a com- INora Chadwick, "The Story of Macbeth," Scottish Gaelic Studies (1949), 187-221; 7 (1951), 1-25.
