This week we will explore the possibilities of what we can achieve to- gether for the children, youth, and families we serve. We are pleased to welcome CEC’s new Executive Director, Alexander T. Graham. He looks for- ward to meeting you and hearing your experiences. The CEC Board of Directors will be avail- able to you during the week and are easily recognizable by their gold CEC badges. Talk to them about becoming a CEC leader, CEC’s new membership model, or about CEC in general. You will not want to miss our Opening General Session on Wednesday from 5:00-6:30 p.m., Robin D. Brewer featuring Andrew Solomon, awarding winning author of Far from the Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity Solomon is an activist and philanthropist in LGBT rights, mental health, education and the arts. We invite you to the President’s Welcome Reception in the Expo Hall on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., immediately following the General Session. Members of the 2014 Program Advisory Committee have carefully selected all the sessions in the program and we trust that you will find this to be one of the best of CEC's convention pro- grams yet! This year’s convention program features endless opportunities to learn about inno- vative strategies, evidence-based practices, and policy affecting our field. Check out the breadth and depth of the program and the expertise from our invited speakers. CEC Divisions offer top- ics relating to their specific mission and interests and each has a Showcase Session that may be Russell Gersten just what you are looking for to enhance your practice. Hear from CEC’s Teacher of the Year at a featured session on Thursday. Express your views at Town Hall meetings on the reality of RTI, implementation of the Common Core for special education students in mathematics and language arts, disproportionate representation, and other critical issues. Participate in a day-long strand and explore timely topics in interrelated sessions. We also have sessions with siblings of students with disabilities and perspectives of adults with autism spectrum disorders on what is and was important in their education. For those of you considering options for your career path, we will be joined by Oregon’s Chief State School Officer, the former Los Angeles Deputy Superintendent for Instruction and oth- ers, for a discussion on the route some special educators have taken to statewide, districtwide, and schoowide lead- ership. Many thanks to Dr. Joe Dimino, Instructional Research Group, Los Alamitos, California and Dr. David Scanlon, Boston University for their many contributions to the convention program. We heard you say that you wanted more time in the Expo! With "exclusive" Expo times built into the schedule throughout the convention, you can explore the exhibits Wednesday evening, Thursday, Friday, and until noon on Saturday. Plan on attending the very special Yes I Can Awards Ceremony on Friday, April 11 from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. Celebrate the accomplishments of our children and youth with exceptionalities along with their peers, teachers, and families. We wish we could bottle the enthusiasm of the Local Arrangements Committee (LAC), comprised of CEC members throughout the state of Pennsylvania. They are excited to welcome you to Philadelphia and can assist you at any time. Many thanks to them for their countless hours of work. We are here to help you and sincerely hope that you enjoy your stay in our wonderful city. The Council for Exceptional Children continually provides convention Laura W Receveur attendees with the premier professional development event for special and gifted education. We hope that you leave this convention having learned something new, having met some wonderful people, and having seen some amazing sights! CEC has prepared for you a week full of informative sessions, fun events, and inspirational moments.     OCTOBER / 2016 ISSUE 41 WE BUILT IT, NOW WILL THEY COME? ast issue, we featured a story detailing what our community went through to build our baseball dome. We left off with the Florida LSuncoast Dome’s grand opening on February 28, 1990, but it had no baseball team to call it home. With no promise of getting one, it soon became apparent building the multi-million dollar building would be easier than getting a team. In 1987, while the stadium was still under construction, the area had come close to convincing the Chicago White Sox to relocate. The Florida Legislature approved a $30-million funding package to assist in outfitting the Florida Suncoast Dome and to help lure them to St. Petersburg. But at the last minute, the team announced they would stay in Chicago. Once open, even without a baseball team, the new dome would not sit idle. The first promoted event was the AAU’s Junior Olympics held July 28, 1990. Over 5,000 young athletes participated. In November, the dome hosted the Davis Cup Tennis Finals. Many concerts were also hosted inside the Suncoast Dome during that time. More major events needed to be booked or there would be no revenue. While, there was room for football and basketball games, ice shows, concerts and even trade shows, the building was built for baseball. In the context of domed ballparks, the Florida Suncoast Dome was considered “nice enough”, but still had no AstroTurf, center-field scoreboard or sky boxes. A year after it opened, in May of 1991, The Florida Suncoast Dome got a real sports team, The Tampa Bay Storm the arena football team.
