The high rate of business failures in Nigeria has left many questions about what is needed for creating business success. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the influence of internal and external dynamics on leaders in Nigerian microfinance organizations. Twenty leaders from microfinance institutions participated in face-to-face semistructured interviews. The data analysis process involved the use of Moustakas’s modified van Kaam method, which resulted in the emergence of 12 themes. The themes that emerged included: (a) staff turnover, (b) financial fraud, (c) knowledge gap, (d) lack of real-time technology, (e) ethical behavior of leaders, (f) organizational bureaucracy, (g) foreign exchange fluctuation, (h) poor state of Nigerian economy, (i) competition from unethical practices of other organizations, (j) constant changes of government policies and poor regulatory controls, and (k) noncompliance with the Microfinance Policy and Framework by stakeholders. There was a common perception among the participants that there was a need for government intervention in providing improved infrastructure and adequate regulatory controls. The findings provide indications from participants’ responses that business success is dependent upon business leaders’ effectiveness in their roles and ethical practices as perceived by the followers. The study is significant in that its findings may assist businesses and government to focus on the effectiveness of leaders, increase labor relations, and increase the overall success of business which in turn improve the economy of Nigeria.     Can We Establish Predictable Trends in Quality of Life in Kaduna State and Nigeria? Timothy Oladayo Popoola Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Nigeria Email: [email protected] Abstract Poor living conditions are common in both urban and rural areas of Nigeria. The nation’s poor quality of life is exemplified by high poverty and large unemployment rate of 35%, low longevity of 54 years, high illiteracy level and insecurity, particularly in the northern part of the country. Kaduna state, in the north-western part of Nigeria, is a trade centre and a major transportation hub for the surrounding agricultural areas. The state is also known as the center of learning, as evident from the numerous educational institutions. Therefore, this paper examined if there are some predictable trends in the quality of life in Kaduna State and Nigeria. The study sourced data from 2018/2019 Nigeria Living Standards Survey (NLSS) by National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The result shows that Kaduna State has higher dependency ratio and mean household size than the Nigeria’s average. The findings also indicated that the percentage of working age population involving in wage employment in Kaduna State is slightly lower than the national average. These results highlight the need for sustained efforts by government and non-government institutions towards improving the quality of life in Kaduna State, in order to create jobs and attain inclusive growth. Despite numerous measures calculated to muzzle the press in Nigeria by the military dictators, Nigerian press has always remained committed. This paper studies the history of the Nigerian press and its role in human rights agitation by focusing on the oldest surviving private newspaper, The Nigerian Tribune under three military regimes between 1984 and 1998.     The Internationalization of Oil Violence in the Niger Delta of Nigeria* Victor Ojakorotu** Abstract This paper unpacks the crisis in the Niger Delta of Nigeria with reference to its external dimensions by which is meant the involvement of international non-governmental organisations in the politics of local environmental governance. It takes as its point of departure the events (in the 1990s) that underpinned the international community’s engagement with an issue that could have been regarded as Nigeria’s domestic affair and follows with an assessment of the impact of internationalisation of the crisis on the major actors in the region. It is noted that the crisis in the Niger Delta has been predicated for over four decades on a number of complex issues in Nigeria’s geo-political landscape. The emergence of organized pressure groups (in the early 1990s) and their protestations against human rights abuses and environmental problems in the region added a ‘new’ dimension to the crisis. In tackling its thematic concern, this paper interrogates the involvement of the international civil society in the Niger Delta and concludes with an appraisal of the extent to which the internationalisation of the crisis engendered both attitudinal and policy shifts on the part of the main actors. Introduction Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, is undisputedly one of the most richly endowed countries on the continent. It boasts of immense resources – human and material – which provide opportunities for national development. Historically, Nigeria’s potentials for rapid industrialization and development had been recognized before the country’s independence in 1960.

    The death of Chief Moses Adeleke Adesiyan on 14 December, 2014 was shocking but glorious. He was aged 85. After his early education, Chief Adesiyan graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (English) – London degree from the University College, Ibadan (UCI), in 1960. No wonder, his command of English Language was perfect and his diction was melodious. He was, indeed, a role model to many UI students. Thereafter, he joined the civil service of the then Western Region, and on the creation of the old Oyo State, he rose to the prestigious position of Head of Service (HoS). Late Chief Adesiyan had a wonderful working relationship with the then Military Governor of Oyo State, Lt. Col. Oladayo Popoola. He retired in 1984. After his retirement and until his death, he was engaged with state and federal assignments. Chief Adesiyan was a true patriot who believed in the sustained growth of Nigeria. In everywhere he worked, he served with the temerity of record reserved only for the genius. Shortly after graduation, late Chief Adesiyan became fully involved in the activities of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association (UIAA). He distinguished himself as the 2nd National President of the Association. Late Chief Adesiyan took over from the founding National President of UIAA, late Chief Bola Ige and served in that capacity from 1979 to 1980. His tenure was remarkable with many innovations that moved the Association to greater heights. This outstanding performance earned him the prestigious Most Distinguished Alumnus Award of the Association which qualified him to use the designatory letters (MDA) after his name.

It was a broadcast like no other, especially, for us in Ogun State. The import of that broadcast is that it acceded to our agitation for a unique identity. With the merger of two existing provinces comprising Remo, Ijebu, Yewa and Egba divisions, Ogun State was born. Plutôt que de « visiter» des ghettos à l'américaine, il entreprend de partir à la rencontre d'une humanité vivante pour y découvrir une solidarité recentrée sur la communauté proche. Il entend surtout rendre compte de la montée de la peur dans les cités d'Afrique noire. En effet, l'explosion de la violence urbaine préoccupe de plus en plus et va de pair avec une crise majeure du développement des villes, qui est de moins en moins contrôlé par l'État. L'un ne va pas sans l'autre et un des objectifs de cet essai est justement de souligner la corrélation existant entre les deux termes de cette équation. La question n'a d'ailleurs pas manqué d'être abordée pendant la conférence d'Habitat II à Istanbul en 1996.Les décideurs s'étonnent àjuste titre: ces agglomérations sont pour la plupart assez récentes et étaient paisibles il y a encore peu de temps.
