Physical Annex 5: 1-page geological and geographic summary Applicant UNESCO Global Geopark Zhangye Geopark, the People’s Republic of China Geographical and geological summary 1. Physical and human geography Zhangye Geopark is located in Zhangye City, Gansu Province, the People's Republic of China(PRC). Its geographical coordinates are 99°16′12″-100°07′37″ E, 38°40′52″-39°03′36″ N, with a total area of 1289.71 square kilometers. It is about 1800 km from Beijing, and 540 km from Lanzhou. The Geopark is located at the first stage of geomorphologic abrupt change of Qinghai- Tibet plateau to Inner Mongolia plateau, the middle section of the northern slope of the Qilian Mountains, and the center of the Hexi Corridor, which belongs to the arid region of the continental cold temperate zone. The climatic characteristics are that the annual temperature difference is large, and the seasonal variation is remarkable. Precipitation is rare and unevenly distributed. It’s dry and windy. The geopark has a population of 37,600, of which 56.5%, i.e. 20,600 people, belong to 15 ethnic minorities, including Yugurs, Tibetans, Mongols, Huis, Manchus, Dongxiangs and Bonans. It is a county of mixed minorities and the only Yugur autonomous county in China. The mainly part of the geopark is situated in Sunan County, the only autonomous county for the Yugur minority ethnic group in China. China Yugur Nationality Corridor inside Zhangye geopark is a must-see attraction that brings together natural scenery, cultural history and minority folk customs. 2. Geological features and geology of international significance Zhangye Geopark is adjacent to the Alxa block to the north and to the south to the Middle Qilian block, belonging to the transitional zone of the Qilian Caledonian fold belt and the Alxa block. The unique geographical location and complex geological process have created rich and typical geoheritage in the Geopark, making Zhangye Geopark a collection of Nine-Spring ophiolite suite, Colorful hills, typical Danxia landforms in arid areas, middle and small structures, water erosion geomorphology etc. Among the geoheritage, the Nine-Springs ophiolite suite has always been a hot spot for Chinese and foreign geologists to investigate and study. It is the Early Paleozoic collision zone between North China plate and the Qaidam plate. Because the ophiolite suite is of international geological significance, it became one of the field trip of the 30th International Geological Conference in 1996 and an important station of the "Australian-China Tectonics and Earth Resources Joint Center" field investigation route in 2018. Zhangye Colorful hills are characterized by monocline and monocline peaks due to tectonic movements, which are full of rhythm and layering and are of international geological significance. Binggou Danxia has developed windows-lattice and palace-style Danxia landforms in the arid area of northern China, often developing mud-emulsion, laminated and other micro-landforms. Heihe River is the second largest inland river in the northwest of China. The upper and middle reaches have formed the geological landscape such as the Heihe gorge with the decline of topography and the strong erosion of the river, which is the natural classroom of geoscience research and has the value of science popularization and education. .

    Palaeontologia Electronica palaeo-electronica.org “Gazella” (Mammalia: Bovidae) from the late Miocene Qingyang area, Gansu, China Yikun Li, Qinqin Shi, Shaokun Chen, and Tao Deng ABSTRACT The rich collection from the late Miocene sediments from the Qingyang area, Gansu, China was discovered by E. Licent in the 1920s, and previous studies focused on the equids and hyaenids whereas little attention was given to the accompanying bovid material. The collection of Bovidae dug up from the Qingyang area and pre- served at Musée Hoangho Paiho, Tianjin, China, is dominated by “Gazella”. We describe and identify two species: “Gazella” paotehensis and “G.” dorcadoides. The nomenclatural issues surrounding those two species of gazelles are reviewed in this paper, and although the questionable mandible illustrated by Teilhard de Chardin and Young in 1931 may be excluded from “G.” paotehensis metrically and morphologically, the species is still considered valid. The subcomplete cranium M 3956, kept at Uppsala Universitet Evolutionsmuseet and studied by B. Bohlin, is selected here as the neotype of “G.” paotehensis, and emended diagnoses are given. Based on previous studies and insights from new material from the Qingyang area, we provide a table summarizing diagnostic morphological characters of “G.” paotehensis and “G.” dorcadoides. Yikun Li. Then the RCHP-enabling areas are briefly zoned into six typical regions based on the resource distribution in Gansu Province, and a matching framework of RCHP is recommended. Then we focus on the economics and sustainability of RCHP-enabling technologies. Based on the medium-term assessment of RCHP in the demonstration provinces, various technical schemes and routes are analysed and compared in order to determine which should be adopted in rural Gansu.

    DOI: 10.4312/as.2019.7.2.47-86 47 Transmission of Han Pictorial Motifs into the Western Periphery: Fuxi and Nüwa in the Wei-Jin Mural Tombs in the Hexi Corridor*8 ∗∗ Nataša VAMPELJ SUHADOLNIK 9 Abstract This paper examines the ways in which Fuxi and Nüwa were depicted inside the mu- ral tombs of the Wei-Jin dynasties along the Hexi Corridor as compared to their Han counterparts from the Central Plains. Pursuing typological, stylistic, and iconographic approaches, it investigates how the western periphery inherited the knowledge of the divine pair and further discusses the transition of the iconographic and stylistic design of both deities from the Han (206 BCE–220 CE) to the Wei and Western Jin dynasties (220–316). Furthermore, examining the origins of the migrants on the basis of historical records, it also attempts to discuss the possible regional connections and migration from different parts of the Chinese central territory to the western periphery. On the basis of these approaches, it reveals that the depiction of Fuxi and Nüwa in Gansu area was modelled on the Shandong regional pattern and further evolved into a unique pattern formed by an iconographic conglomeration of all attributes and other physical characteristics. Accordingly, the Shandong region style not only spread to surrounding areas in the central Chinese territory but even to the more remote border regions, where it became the model for funerary art motifs.
