    The Washburn Valley Reservoirs – spillway improvements J. R. CLAYDON, Yorkshire Water D. L. KNOTT, TEAM I. C. CARTER, TEAM _____________________________________________________________ SYNOPSIS. The Washburn Valley reservoirs comprise a cascade of four impounding reservoirs situated about 12 km to the west of Harrogate in North Yorkshire. The three lower reservoirs, Lindley Wood, Swinsty and Fewston, were formed between 1875 and 1879, by the construction of earth embankment dams with puddle clay cores. The upper reservoir, Thruscross, is a mass concrete gravity dam constructed in 1966. The upper three reservoirs supply water to Leeds while the lowest, Lindley Wood, provides compensation flows to the River Washburn. The three lower dams would be overtopped during the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF). The situation was complicated by the publication of the Flood Estimation Handbook (FEH), which led to a review of the conceptual design and a lengthy delay, which was recovered by carrying out works at two dams in one season, instead of one per year as originally planned. The rehabilitation works consisted of crest raising and spillway modifications at the three embankment dams. • Lindley Wood: a 3 m high earth embankment was built downstream of the existing crest road, which will be inundated during extreme floods. • Swinsty: the crest was raised 1.2 m and the multi-span masonry arched bridge replaced by a clear span. • Fewston: the crest was raised 0.9 m and the multi span masonry arched bridge replaced by a clear span. At £6.5 M this is one of the largest reservoir safety rehabilitation schemes undertaken by Yorkshire Water (YW).

    Land Subsidence and the Reservoirs of the Washburn Valley Andrew McTominey Water management can have profound effects upon the landscape. The proliferation of dam building in Britain, particularly during the nineteenth century as towns and cities sought pure water for growing populations, saw municipal waterworks and private water companies move further into the countryside, such as Manchester’s Thirlmere Reservoir in the Lake District or Liverpool’s Vyrnwy Reservoir in North Wales. As reservoirs were built, they altered the natural landscape. Whilst this process has been examined by environmental and urban historians in more famous sites of natural beauty such as the Lake District, the Washburn Valley, which hosts the four main service reservoirs for Leeds built between 1866 and 1966, has been overlooked. The three reservoirs in the lower valley, Lindley Wood, Swinsty, and Fewston, were built between 1869 and 1879; the fourth reservoir, Thruscross, was not built until 1966 due to financial difficulties. Not only did the building of these reservoirs profoundly impact the social make-up of the valley and the way the valley has become culturally represented, they also affected the physical landscape itself. Eric Swyngedouw’s term “socionature” is applicable, because the Leeds Corporation, as the owner of the reservoirs, worked in tandem with nature in order to alter and form the amended landscape, seeing the natural environment as a resource through which it could service its urban population.
