Bulletin No. X 1 PRECIOSA IN BLACKPOOL For the most part of the year, Blackpool is a typical English seaside city situated on the north-western coast of the Irish Sea, near Liverpool. It is hugely popular especially on weekends and during the tourist season, and is therefore regarded by the British as a tourist and entertainment capital. The Blackpool Dance Festival, incorporating the British Open Championships (www.blackpooldancefestival.net), is often termed as a mecca for all Latin American and Standard dancers, both professional and amateur. This festival is the world’s biggest, oldest (held regularly in Blackpool’s Winter Gardens since 1920) and most famous annual competition in which dancing couples from all over the world participate. Such characteristics, coupled with the presence of so many top couples, are the reason why professional dancers, as well as amateurs and the general dancing public, attach such great importance to this festival – greater even than the regard given to world championships that could never boast, compared with Blackpool, such concentration of couples at one place and in one time. It is true to say that Blackpool is Wimbledon’s dancing counterpart: a dancing couple that has never taken part in the festival can hardly rank among top dancers. Besides the ballroom, where the festival annually takes place, the Winter Gardens complex also includes an exhibition and sale hall where manufacturing companies from all quarters of the world display and offer their complete range of dance-related products. One of the regular exhibitors is also the Dance Sport International (DSI) Company, Preciosa’s exclusive authorized distributor for Great Britain, offering a complete range of dancing gear. DSI regularly purchases machine-cut glass stones from Preciosa to decorate dancers’ costumes and various accessories. Last year, the company’s exhibition stand attracted every visitor’s attention not only due to its splendor and prime position directly opposite the main entrance, but primarily due to the 29 Preciosa - Lustry crystal chandeliers. The Company's Activities The Company's The DSI Company’s exhibition stand exclusively decorated with lighting fixtures by Preciosa - Lustry. 2 Lighting Projects PRECIOSA - LUSTRY IN SPAIN AGAIN On January 1, 2009, Preciosa - Lustry opened its new Madrid-based Spanish subsidiary named Ibero Preciosa. It was established with the aim of extending the company’s range of lighting fixtures on offer, and improving our customer service on the Spanish market, primarily in the lighting projects sector. The opening ceremony, attended by Mr. Petr Eichner, Commercial Counselor, Ms. Adriana Krásová, Director of the Czech Republic’s Cultural Center in Prague, and Preciosa - Lustry headquarters’ representatives Mr. Milan Beneš, Vice President for Sales and Marketing, and Mr. Michal Gabaj, Senior Sales Executive of Spain, took place on January 15, 2009 on the premises of the Czech Embassy in Madrid. Ibero Preciosa was represented by the company’s new managing director Mr. Nick Briggs. Invited to the ceremony also were, first of all, a special guest of honor Mr. Juan Peña Pérez, President of the Tridex company (closed down in January 2009) and the most prominent Spanish architects, designers and distributors. The guests present were acquainted with previous Preciosa - Lustry lighting projects and informed about the company’s plans for the future. This glittering event concluded with an informal discussion and a hors d'oeuvre reception. The well-known Czech artist Rony Plesl, Preciosa - Lustry’s external designer, designed the company’s exhibition stand and some of the fixtures from the NEW 2008 catalogue. Rony Plesl designed Preciosa - Lustry’s exhibition stand as a sushi bar, with bamboo stems in various configurations forming interesting decorations contrasting with the crystal chandeliers illuminating the interior. The dominant chandelier, designed by Preciosa - Lustry’s chief designer Jaroslav Bejvl Jr, was our exhibition stand’s most captivating quality, attracting the attention of our customers, mainly architects and designers. Mr. Bejvl followed the current trend in designing classical lighting fixtures characterized by added distinctive Inspiration elements of modern morphology, such as the extravagant vacuum-coated chandelier trimmings combined with classical cut crystal components – all used in the fixture mentioned above. This combination makes a distinctive contrast, amplifying the beauty of the chandelier. This chandelier’s timeless design will match both modern and classical interiors. 4 Lighting Projects PRECIOSA - LUSTRY AT THE DAYS OF DESIGN IN PRAGUE DESIGNBLOK 08 The biggest Czech design show ‘Designblok 08’, held at the DOX Superstudio, featured a unique lighting object by the name of Gargantua, designed by Rony Plesl and his studio team. This hand-made chandelier is about 2,5 meters high and shaped as a bunch of blossoming branches, all shining ends pointing downward. The new chandelier Gargantua, designed by the renowned Czech artist Rony Plesl and his studio team, hovers on the boundary of a work of art and a piece of interior furnishings. This unique lighting object, three meters high, had its premiere at the design show ‘Designblok 08’ held in the entrance hall of the DOX Superstudio. This spectacular chandelier, made and assembled from mouth-blown glass components in combination with machine-cut crystal chandelier trimmings, 50 cm in diameter, will be sold in an original limited edition by Preciosa, the company that started and completed the manufacture of this fixture. The designer Rony Plesl became famous primarily for his collections of wine and beer glasses and glass vases, currently on display at the Prague exhibition staged in the Window Gallery, and for other impressive objects. Recently, he was in the spotlight for his new Pilsner Urquell beer glasses, and for winning the Czech Grand Design Award nomination and the prestigious Red Dot Award. D’Andrea’s is an insightful study of expressive indi- vidualism manifested in and through key cosmopolitan sites. This book is an 5 invaluable contribution to the anthropology/sociology of contemporary culture, 6 and presents required reading for students and scholars of new spiritualities, 7 techno-dance culture and globalization. 8 Graham St John, Research Fellow, 9 School of American Research, New Mexico 20111 1 D'Andrea breaks new ground in the scholarship on both globalization and the shaping of subjectivities. And he does so spectacularly, both through his focus 2 on neomadic cultures and a novel theorization. This is a deeply erudite book 3 and it is a lot of fun. 4 Saskia Sassen, Ralph Lewis Professor of Sociology 5 at the University of Chicago, and Centennial Visiting Professor 6 at the London School of Economics. 7 8 Global Nomads is a unique introduction to the globalization of countercultures, 9 a topic largely unknown in and outside academia. SOS at Buddha Bar could appeal to Seminyak visitors Submitted by: LateRooms Ltd Wednesday, 10 March 2010 People using Seminyak hotels (http://www.asiarooms.com/indonesia/seminyak.html) may like to make a trip to the Indonesian capital for a forthcoming event. While the Bali resort is famous for its sophisticated restaurants and idyllic beach location, Jakarta boasts the kind of nightlife that could persuade travellers to spend a few days away from the surf. On Saturday March 27th, the city's popular Buddha Bar venue will be hosting the SOS (Sound of Sumatera) night. The event promises to be an exciting showcase of Indonesian dance music's up-and-coming stars, with the likes of DJ Phuture89, DJ Vandalisme, Rico and Rezaliano taking to the decks. People heading out to the Buddha Bar are advised to remember the dress code, which demands smart casual attire. This means visiting wearing shorts, sandals, torn jeans or sleeveless shirts are likely to be refused entry. The SOS night gets underway from 22:00 local time and will also include a special DJ battle showcase featuring Sonny DMC. Based in the city's former Dutch Immigration Building, the Buddha Bar opened in Jakarta in 2008. The Indonesian nightspot is one of the latest branches of a franchise that began in Paris and also includes venues in London, Beirut, Cairo, Dubai, Kiev and Sao Paulo. • Buddha Bar in Indonesia: Can Religious Symbols Be Employed As a Unique Selling Point?
Buddha Bar in Indonesia: Can Religious Symbols Be Employed as a Unique Selling Point? Ike Janita Dewi In March 2009, Jakarta faced a sensitive religious issue, one that was potentially embarrassing. A group known as the Buddhist Students’ Alliance held a street protest against Buddha Bar, a bar/restaurant famous for its trademark lounge music and Orientalist interior design centered on images of the Buddha. More than 100 members of the Alliance sealed off the bar by draping a yellow line across the bar’s entrance to protest the establishment’s use of the name and image of Buddha. The Alliance, which claimed to be the voice of Indonesian Buddhists, justified their obstruction of the bar which they said caused humiliation among Buddhists and hurt their sensibilities.1 The protesters said “Buddha” was a holy name and should not be linked with an entertainment venue like a bar. “Sealing off the bar was a move by our friends who wanted the Buddha positioned appropriately,” said Gatot Sukarno Adi, deputy secretary-general of Walubi, the Indonesian federation of Buddhist organizations. He added that the controversy broke out because the government did not notify the Buddhist community before granting permits for the bar. “The government should have informed us before issuing the permits, to ask whether it was acceptable for us,” Gatot said.2 Buddha Bar Jakarta, a local branch of Buddha Bar International, has been embroiled in religious controversy from the day it opened. The bar was accused of using Buddhist sacred symbols inappropriately since it sold alcoholic drinks, which Buddhist teaching forbids.
