______6 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. PRESIDENT’S REPORT

PETER PHYSICK

After 12 years as your President, I have decided not to stand for re election to that position in 2008. It has been an amazing journey and one that holds many lasting and in particular, very fond memories. I hope that I can still make a contribution to the Club in another way and look forward to maintaining a close link where I can. There is no major significant reason why I have come to this decision other than a decade or more is too long for anyone person to hold such a role within a sporting or business environment these days. There are many high quality people at East Coast who can step in and take the Club to a higher echelon than we have been able to achieve so far. Just as we do with our on field personnel, the quest to continually recruit and develop administrators should be an active and dynamic cycle to ensure that we remain at the forefront of our peers within the Sydney AFL Premier League. That day in 1995 seems such a distant memory when I accepted a request from Tony Hill to nominate as his successor for the Baulkham Hills AFC’s 1996 season. It appeared to be a reasonable thing to do at the time with Ben & Tim heavily into junior footy with the Falcons and Laima helping out with the canteen. Even way back then, one of the tasks undertaken was liaison with the Council to secure an additional ground for the senior side of the Club, as “Charlie McLaughlin” was fast becoming very overcrowded with the number of teams the Club was fielding. As time moved on, it became apparent that changes should be considered for the senior side of the Club to participate at the level required in the Sydney AFL. One of those was the physical move away from the Hills community. We were always confident that one day we would have our own ground back in the NorWest area, however negotiations with Council had stalled and the Falcons began playing out of Macquarie Uni as our home ground in 1999. It was also in 1999, that the then NSWAFL Commission proposed to eliminate Baulkham Hills from the Premier SFL competition. This threat caused us to creatively consider the option of a name change and a separation from the Junior Club. In 2000 we became the East Coast Eagles AFL Football Club providing a feeder opportunity to all junior clubs in the Hills region, rather than just the Falcons. The fantastic relationship with West Coast had thus commenced. But we still didn’t have that damn ground and for the next seven years, East Coast effectively played every match every season as an away game. Not to mention the various training venues we needed to go to. However as we now know, the Withers Road development is full steam ahead and the East Coast Eagles will have their own long awaited home ground for the 2008 season and beyond. This in itself brings forth enormous opportunities for playing success, not to mention the prospects of significant marketing revenue. The creation and establishment of the ECE structure and brand in Sydney and the finalisation of the Withers Road complex therefore stand out for me as the two major achievements of your Executive Board during the time frame of my Presidency. There have been many willing contributors to both these causes over this time and whilst I would love to name them all, it is just not possible. Suffice to say that the various Year Books and Annual Reports over the years have carried all the highly justified individual accolades. In relation to the ground however, particular congratulations and thanks go to Graeme Merkel, John Evernden and Chris Bilkey together with Allan McKinnon and Clare ToiaBailey from the NSWAFL.

Some people say that we “deserved a First Grade Premiership” in 2006. Well, contrary to popular opinion, no one Club deserves a Premiership – they have to be earned. And they come along so ______7 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. infrequently that when the victory is there, the only deserving element is that you truly do deserve to party hard in celebration!! East Coast will win more than their fair share of Premierships in years to come, believe me. The club is well set up with a Board and management that are determined to succeed, excellent financial corporate partners as sponsors, the new ground coming online and an exceptional blend of experience and youth in the playing ranks. The NorWest region has an enormous growth rate and its affordable and abundant housing will bring more and more AFL oriented families into the area. Indeed the real task at hand though will be to arouse an interest in AFL within those kids not currently playing the game. With that in mind, the March 2007 appointment of Anthony Dignan to East Coast as our Development / General Manager will pay dividends as “Digs” continues his work within the schools and junior clubs of the Hills area. Not only on our behalf, but also that of West Coast who have always viewed the greater Sydney metropolis as a fertile recruiting ground. 2007 was an indifferent year on the track with First Grade finishing 5 th on ten wins, the Reserves winning back to back Premierships, and for the first time, we fielded two U/18 teams with the Premier League 18’s just missing out on a spot in the four. At season end, the Board elected not to renew head coach Rohan Graham’s contract into a 4 th year. It was a difficult decision, but one which reflected the direction the Club wishes to head in future years. On your behalves may I thank Rohan for the effort he has put in and the contribution he has made to the progress of the East Coast Eagles in his three years at the coaching helm. Off the track, we once again enjoyed excellent sponsorship support thanks to the drive and dedication of Vice President Steve Gawley who continues to surpass previous levels of distinction in his desire to produce income for the club. Graeme Merkel once again deserves his own medal for the time and effort he has generated as Football Operations Director in ensuring that all things to do with the football department are done correctly and on time. Gus Seebeck came onto the Executive in April, following the resignation of Finance Director Andrew Baxter when he moved to Melbourne. Gus has handled the difficult task of being a current player, and a member of the Executive, with aplomb and his business expertise has been widely valued. General Manager Anthony Dignan has fitted in extremely well and he too shares a deep commitment to make East Coast a club which has solid and resilient foundations in order to build on the growth which already occurred. Other individual reports inside this Year Book will attest to, and thank the various contributions made by people within different teams or committees. Each and every one of you is a valued member of our Club. In conclusion I ask that you continue to support and encourage the incoming President and the Board as much as you have done for me, as together they set about the task of administering and building the Club into the future. To Laima, Ben & Tim, I thank you for allowing me the time to indulge in what has been a wonderfully enjoyable dozen or so years which, fortunately, we have all spent together and for the same cause, at a great Club …..

With best wishes to you all and see you on opening day at Withers Road.

______8 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. GENERAL MANAGER

ANTHONY DIGNAN

Now seven months into the Job I can reflect on what has been an enjoyable, frustrating rewarding and challenging season. It has been great to get back involved again with a club and feel the ups and downs of the success and failure as we have gone through the season.

The season was almost upon us when I took up the role with East Coast, so this year was a case of observe and assist where possible to have the club going in the right direction. It was to analyse and continue on with areas that were working and in areas that were not working to make suggestions to try to improve them. I will reflect on the two areas that make up a club on field and off field performance.

ON FIELD PERFORMANCE

Our main goal on the field is to ensure that we are producing and recruiting as many senior footballers to ensure that our seniors are playing finals football every year. Once you make finals in Sydney then anything is possible. Another main goal is to provide an attractive pathway for junior footballers to be able to play at the highest level in Sydney and to want to play for the East Coast Eagles.

It was always going to be difficult for the senior team to rebound after a heart breaking Grand Final loss and up to nine grand final players not returning for season 2007. What it did was to provide a new challenge to the coaching staff and players of season 2007 to maintain and increase the standards of season 2006.

Unfortunately our seniors did not play finals football. Injuries to key players hurt the team. The loss of key big man Josh Ryder early in the season to overseas also did not help. However injury and loss of players occurs to all clubs and clubs need to adjust and deal with the situation as best as they can. As a club I feel we did not adjust well enough from adversity and need to learn from what happened in season 2007.

The one positive that did occur was that many young East Coast Eagles played senior football for the first time. This will hopefully accelerate the development of the seven debutants in season 2007. We now need to ensure that education comes with selection so that these players form the nucleus of the side for many years to come.

The development of young players is an area that the club needs to focus on. Pennant Hills and North Shore are two clubs that play finals football year in and year out and their development of their local footballers is fantastic. We need to reach the same level and if not better to ensure that local talent is filling a big part of our senior team.

Yes the club has taken steps to engage the four local junior clubs in the area and now we must work on developing this young talent further. We also need to back up the junior development with a good core senior group. If we can get the balance right we will have success for many years to come.

The great story for season 2007 was the Premiership victory of the Reserve Grade side. There is no harder thing to do in football than win backto back Premierships. Under first year coach Jason Duss

______9 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. this was achieved. What was also promising for the club was that the team on Grand Final day included six under 18 players in the side.

No matter what was thrown up at this team they responded. Even when the injuries mounted in the seniors and this snowballed to the Reserves they took on each new challenge and won. They grew as a group as the year went on and had a firm belief that no challenge was too big. A lot of the credit must go to Jason, Ryan Madden and Trevor Hangan for the outstanding job done by the coaching staff and the belief they instilled in the team.

It was a great result and a great grand final and hopefully this win will inspire many players to want to achieve the same in the seniors.

Another positive to come out of season 2007 was the development of the Under 18 players and the hard work of Alan Moeller, Peter Steer and Scott Abercrombie to have a second Under 18 team for the first time in the history of the club. The club could now provide the opportunity to play Under 18 football at both the Premier Cup and Challenge Cup levels.

The Premier Cup team went from one win to almost making the finals and the development of the Challenge Cup team throughout the season was enormous. All this was achieved with a great coaching staff of Peter Steer, Jon Lee and Scott Abercrombie.

We feel as a club that we can develop the Under 18 players slightly better than most junior clubs and to enable more players to be given this opportunity through a second team can only assist the club going forward. Hopefully most of these players will go on to form a major component of both Senior and Reserves teams in the years to come. If they do not make it as a player, then there are other ways they can stay involved in this great club.

As we are all aware the contract of Rohan Graham was not renewed but Rohan is to be thanked for the effort he has put in over the last three years. He has improved greatly in his first senior coaching position. The time and effort he put into his position can not be questioned which included the research of opposition players and team reports. The Board however felt he was not the best person to take the club to the next level. We know he has developed as a coach and will continue to develop and the club wishes him well in whatever coaching path he takes next.

Terry Mudge and Jason Coulloupas assisted Rohan this year and are also to be thanked for their time and effort. Terry brought his own tactical ideas and enthusiasm to the position. His passion for the club to succeed is second to none. With the appointment of a new coach it means that all coaching positions become vacant. We thank Terry for his efforts of the last two years and hope that he will not be lost to the club.

Jason was appointed as an assistant for the first time and his passion to succeed shone through in his coaching. We think there is much upside in the continued development of Jason as a coach and we look forward to having Jason on board with the approval of the new coach.

The club also thanks Phil Bester and Peter Steer as match day assistants. We also thank Chris Ford and Mark Horan for helping as the bench coach. The running was taken on by James Young who did a magnificent job throughout the season. We also had three managers to assist the seniors in Peter Whale, Jon Gawley and Rowley Alexander. We thank all the helpers that made the seniors run as efficiently as they could.

The Reserve Grade side was supported by the team manager Peter Mann who did an outstanding job in ensuring that the team was ready to play each week. No task was ever too big and the manner in which he performed the job was also a reason the team was always positive. I am sure that all the players, coaches and the club would like to say thank you Peter for an outstanding job.

______10 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. Tim Coakley is also to be congratulated for being the main runner for the season. It always helps when a runner knows the players as well as what Tim did.

The Under 18 coaching staff was ably assisted by many helpers. Alan Moeller did a great job as the under 18 coordinator, Steve Burns and Bryn Whales were great support as managers for the two teams. Tim Lee and Doug Scholz always put their hands up to act as assistants and we had many parents who week in week out put their hand up to help throughout the season. Thankyou, it was much appreciated.

The Eagles’ Medical team headed by Matt Stewart and assisted by Simon West, Keryn Milford, Sam Ennis, Tim Karbowiak and also on match day by Rudy Bylsma, were there to tape and rub the players. In all my time in working with and around clubs and the AFL Programs they are the most organised and efficient medical team I have had the pleasure of working with.

Without the help of all these people we would not have been able to achieve anything on the field this season. We hope that we can look forward to as many people putting their hand up again next year to achieve even more on the field next year.

All the players are to be congratulated on the efforts given by all for the club. A great reward was achieved by the Reserve Grade players for their efforts. The Under 18 players took great strides forward this year. The seniors need to learn from the ups and downs of this year and look forward to next year with renewed vigour and determination from lessons learnt.

The leadership group lead by Club Captain Jon Vlatko will ensure that no stone, from the player’s point of view, will be left unturned to return to the level we all want at the club.

OFF FIELD PERFORMANCE

It has been a pleasure to be involved such a professional out fit that is the Eagles Board.

Steve Gawley’s passion for the success of the club is second to none. His sponsorship and marketing prowess has made the Eagles the leader and envy of all other clubs in the AFL Sydney competition. I thank Steve for all his help this year and sometimes wonder if he works for his own company, or just for the East Coast Eagles. His support for the club is a huge reason why the club is moving forward. Chris Bilkey has kept the ball rolling on the start and completion of the new ground at Withers Road and his push for this should see it be ready for season 2008.

Probably the hardest job in the club is to keep the figures in perspective and I thank Andrew “Billy” Baxter for his patience and support in this area of Financial Direction. We wish Billy well in his new career in Melbourne. Football Operations Manager Graeme Merkel is a stalwart of the club with an attitude of nothing is too much trouble. Graeme is another reason why the Eagles are so professional in their approach to making a football club run. After five years in this position Graeme has decided that he needs a new challenge and he will be hanging up his managerial position to move into a new role. Graeme has done a great job in this position and I am sure that he will be as successful in whatever role he takes on within the club next year.

Peter Physick as President has one thing at heart and that is the success of the East Coast Eagles Football Club. The amount of time and effort he puts into the club is incredible. For anyone to be President for 12 years is a credit to the person Peter is and the passion he has for the club.

Peter has seen the club go from Baulkham Hills to East Coast. He has played a huge part in the development of Withers Road and now he sees fit to pass on the baton to a new Chairman who will bring fresh ideas and help the club continue along the foundation that Peter has set. They will be huge

______11 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. shoes to fill, but shoes that Peter feels comfortable in passing on. Peter may no longer be Chairman, but he will always continue to be a driving force in the club.

Gus Seebeck joined the Board in season 2007. For someone so young, he has wisdom beyond his age but maybe not his looks. He is a valuable asset to any sporting organisation with the expertise he brings to the table. I look forward to working with Gus in the future. The East Coast Eagles Football Club is blessed to have a Board that is willing to do anything that will make the Eagles a force in Sydney.

So it will be the start of a new era. We will have a new Chairman, new Football Operations Manager, a new ground and a new coach. With change brings excitement and with excitement brings a breath of fresh air. All these changes combined with continued hard work will hopefully lead to the goal that the Eagles strive for. The goal of being the number one club on and off the field,

The Club continues to be involved in programs that develop the game in our area. In conjunction with the AFL NSW/ACT Development team, the East Coast Eagles were involved in a number of initiatives.

The programs that the Club was involved in were:

NorWest Christian School – AFL Sports Program, Arndell College – Year 9 Skills Programs, Paul Kelly Cup Days, In School Clinics, School Visits, Club Visits, AFL Coach Education Programs, 9–ASide Competitions, Hills After School Competition, Private School Competitions, AFL talented Players Program

The Club feels that this is an important area to be involved in to ensure the ongoing development and retention of players to the game. The future stability of the club depends on the development of juniors to ensure a community based club and the opportunity for all aspiring young AFL players in the area to play senior football at the East Coast Eagles.

It takes time and effort to run a football club and the East Coast Eagles are lucky enough to have a group of people that are willing to help on a weekly basis. Match Day and especially home matches require a lot of support and I would like to thank the following people for their support during the season. Scott Gatte, Glen Johnston and Frank Ure would do anything that was asked and all the Lions Club for supplying the excellent catering at selected East Coast Eagles home matches.

Thanks to Maree Murphy for her help in organising and the selling of the raffles on match days.

Craig Abercrombie and Digital Sports.... what can you say? They do more than is probably realised behind the scenes and especially to Craig thanks for all your help and everything that I asked you to do was never too much trouble.

Trevor Nisbett and David Elliott and the West Coast Eagles your support to the club is second to none and the partnership between the two clubs continues to get stronger. I am sure it is a partnership that will further develop over the years to come. We thank the club and especially you two for your continued efforts.

To all the East Coast Eagles supporters’ (the yellow army) a big thanks for your fantastic support and effort throughout the year.

Last but not least I must publicly thank my family Fiona, Jack and Molly for their patience and support throughout the year.

I look forward to the challenge of season 2008 and the club continuing on the path of becoming the number one club in the Sydney AFL.

______12 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. WEST COAST EAGLES

DAVID ELLIOTT

The 2007 season brought several challenges to both the East Coast and West Coast Eagles and our motto, “From adversity comes strength” has possibly never been more relevant than in this year. As both clubs focus on our preparations for season 2008, it is the strength that our loyal supporters have shown us throughout this year that fuels our desire to overcome these testing times and achieve as highly as possible.

This was demonstrated in 2007 by the Reserve Grade for East Coast. What an outstanding effort to win back to back Premierships. Huge congratulations go to the team and Jason Duss who, in his first year of coaching has won the ultimate prize. In April this year when Trevor Nisbett and I attended the season launch luncheon at the North Ryde Golf Club, we both commented on the enthusiasm and professionalism demonstrated by Jason. This was obviously displayed throughout the year and rubbed off onto the playing group, which enabled the team to go back to back.

The senior side definitely fought all the way to the end the season in what was a tough year with a large player turnover from 2006 to 2007, much the same as West Coast who went out in two very courageous finals without a number of key players. But we can be sure that many younger players have now gained invaluable experience and will provide greater depth to the selection pool in 2008.

Off the field, it has been exciting news with the progress of Withers Road. After years of operating without a base, this dream is now becoming a reality and whilst a lot of hard work and planning is yet to be carried out, we all know the benefits will be worth the wait. This and the appointment of Anthony Dignan, who is now entering his second year with the club, will provide strong offfield strategic direction for the future which is essential at all levels of football in the modern era.

In 2007 we are once again very thankful for the support of everyone at East Coast for the support shown at our round one away clash at Telstra Stadium against Sydney. What a way to start the season with another nail biting onepoint victory in front of a crowd of 60,000plus away from Subiaco.

In June, Kim Hannah and David Hynes completed their annual Sydney schools visits by conducting footy clinics and educational messages for three days. Kim was very positive with his feedback on the awareness and progress of AFL in the schools he has visited for three consecutive years and is already looking forward to returning in 2008.

With regard to the ECE / WCE relationship, I am happy to report the awareness here in Western Australia has significantly grown over the past couple of years. All of our staff within the West Coast Eagles, WA media and many supporters comment and talk about the now wellestablished relationship. A special mention this year goes to Mike Pilkington at Taxi Clothing who was kind enough to introduce me to his business operations in China where merchandising opportunities now exist for us to distribute greater quantities of merchandise throughout our community programs.

The similarities between our clubs over the previous two seasons have been mentioned on numerous occasions and heading into 2008 it looks like it will be much the same. Both clubs have had to deal with some personnel changes in important positions since the

______13 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. season’s end and whilst we will miss these people, we are keen to focus on the new opportunities presented for us to keep moving forward towards our common goal of achieving sustained success.

On behalf of the West Coast Eagles, I thank the players, support staff and board of the East Coast Eagles for their camaraderie and support of both clubs and Australian football in the New South Wales environment.

Let’s all put in a big preseason and get excited about another great opportunity in 2008.

______15 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. PLAYER LIFE MEMBERS 2007

1. ECE Player Life Membership will be awarded to any player who provides 10 years of playing service, not necessarily consecutive, from and including games played (minimum of one) in any grade from and including the year 2000 onwards. 2. Past service (in playing years) with the BHAFC can be included in determining eligibility.

Comments in italics are taken from the Annual Report for the player’s first year of football at the Club.

DAMIAN GATTE ….. Yet another of our smaller brigade, also with a big heart. Played against a lot bigger opponents but still gave his all for his team. Damian, keep having a go like you did this year and your game will only get better. U/10 Falcons Maroon 1998

Damian enjoyed a wonderful inaugural season in the senior ranks. He chalked up his 200 th Club game (total of 208), made his debut in the First Grade side and was Runner Up in the Billy McLeod Medal for the Reserves. Played in the Reserves’ Premiership side. Like his coach said back in ’98, Damian’s game will only get better as he gains more senior football experience.

JAMES GORDON ….. Joined the U/10 Golds from Auskick after four games. He was enthusiastic in chasing the ball, occasionally infringing by kicking off the ground. He performed well at both ends of the field and his ability to get into position improved every game. He kicks the ball very well and his other skills should develop further with consistent training next year. U/10 Falcons Gold 1997

James was one of the key midfielders this year and provided drive with his ability to break packs and then deliver the ball with accuracy. His strength, determination and skill saw him dominate the midfield and win the respect of team mates and opponents alike. James will continue to be a valuable player at East Coast and a key contributor at the senior level.

NATHAN GORDON …… Nathan joined his twin brother from Auskick after four games. He moved around the ground well and kicked some huge kicks from marks. He continued to improve every game and was willing to play in most positions on the field. His marking and handballing skills will improve further with training next year. The twins have another three years in U/10’s. U/10 Falcons Gold 1997

Nathan had an excellent season and seems to have found a niche as one of the premier defenders in the U18 competition. His dominance overhead, run out of defence and ability to generate scoring opportunities was a highlight of his season. Nathan was rewarded for his consistent efforts by placing third in the Kealy Medal. He has truly developed into a skilful and versatile player who has a big future at East Coast.

______16 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. PLAYER LIFE MEMBERS 2007

TIM KEAR …… Tim arrived from Wagga via Melbourne this season and quickly made his mark. One of the ‘mosquito fleet’, he displays excellent ball skills, anticipation and aggression. His ability to win the hard ball in close, get away from the opposition and deliver to a team mate kept us going forward all year. Tim played a key part in the U/11 Premiership this year as well in a great season. Tim won the team’s Best & Fairest player trophy, as well as the Northside JAFL B&F award. Well done on a great season Tim and he remains eligible for U/10 next year! U/10 Falcons Gold 1998

Tim has had an up and down year. After a good debut season in First Grade in 2006 he would have hoped to cement a spot in the seniors in 2007. This was not to be and he only played five games at the elite level. At no stage though did Tim drop his bundle and he has continued to strive to improve his game. Sharing the Sanders Medal in the Sydney AFL Reserve Grade with Tim Physick was a great reward for hard work plus was a member of the Reserve Grade Premiership side.

ASHLEY LOXTON …… First year player who shows considerable promise. Likes taking excellent overhead marks and kicks like a natural. Will improve with the benefits of having played this year. U/12 Hawks 1996.

Ash played 16 games in the Two’s this year and was a proud member of the Premiership side this year. Has now played 137 Club games since his career in AFL footy commenced in 1996. Always a great team man, Ash has bounced back well from a sickening incident several years ago at .

JAMES MANN …… A very late introduction to the team and yet another Karen Madden recruit. James has a long kick and will benefit from the experience in his first season. James will prove to be an excellent team player as he continues to build his skills. U/9 Kookas 1995 Third in the Reserve’s B&F and a Premiership medallion around his neck suggests that James had a pretty good season in 2007. But by his own standards he knows that he can do better and will be looking forward to 08 and breaking into the First Grade side. He got a taste this year with two games late in the season.

CHRIS MOORE …… A first year player who was solid as a rock in defence and provided great support across the fullback line. Chris was at his best when he attacked the ball at full speed and cleared the ball from defence. We need to see more of that positive aggression from all players. Chris also showed he could play up forward and kicked a few goals when shifted there in a couple of games. U11/Falcons Gold 1998

Chris played 13 matches in the Two’s moving in and out of the side and unfortunately was not included in the 22 for the Grand Final. Nevertheless the great team man that ‘CMoore’ is saw him fully involved on the big day and enjoyed the victory with his mates.

______17 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. PLAYER LIFE MEMBERS 2007

TRAVIS THRIPP …… The coach’s son. A very difficult role to fulfil. However Travis did not show any signs of these difficulties throughout the year. Travis was our target up forward and during the year improved at this position to the extent that his team mates always looked for him. Travis’ strength and strong kicking makes him the ideal full forward. Keep up the good work and you will soon be scoring a bag of goals each week. Travis was also well deserving of the most improved award. U/10 Falcons Maroon 1997

Trav returned to football in 07 after a year off. He immediately settled into the Two’s playing 19 games to break through the 150 Club game level. (Now at 158). Thrippy was a key member of the Premiership side and his football was at a high level throughout the year. Although a mere four goals for the season means that his current coach prefers to have him in defence rather than at full forward!! LIFE MEMBER 2007

1. Life Membership may be conferred upon any Member who has 10 years active involvement with either Baulkham Hills Australian Football Club Inc (BHAFC) or East Coast Eagles AFL Football Club Inc (ECE) and has rendered outstanding service, or has displayed exceptional, unusual, or distinguished merit to the Club. 2. MICHAEL PILKINGTON

Many would recall the day when Mike and Sheryl wandered into Charles McLaughlin Reserve to see what was happening, having spied the AFL posts on the oval. They had just moved from Melbourne and the familiar sight of their favourite code of football cheered them no end. Hence the Baulkham Hills Falcons gained another new family with both boys Ryan and Matthew saddling up with the Golds and Mum & Dad there to support them to the hilt. As their business Taxi Clothing grew, Mike & Sheryl became integral financial supporters as well, with the Falcons and subsequently the Eagles, benefiting from their ongoing generosity and desire to see the Club improve its position both on and off the field. Mike shares everyone’s desire to see the first Senior Premiership flag flying from an Eagle flagpole in the years to come at Withers Road. Taxi Clothing’s sponsorship of, and partnership with East Coast, contributes significantly to this vision.

West Coast too, benefit from the Pilkington touch when in 2007, Michael introduced them to key business contacts in China to enable that club to secure supporter merchandise. A passionate Fitzroy supporter, Pilko was devastated when the Roys lost their identity and he now views East Coast as “his Fitzroy”.

Thankyou so much for all your support Michael Pilkington. ______18 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

______20 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. FINANCIAL CONTROLLER’S REPORT

ANDREW BAXTER

This season the Club had one major financial goal to be debt free at the end of the season and to be the number one football club in Sydney. We as a club needed to ensure that the significant funds needed for the Withers Road facility can be met for season 2008 and beyond and at the same time work towards our goal of being the best club in the Sydney AFL. To ensure this can happen, the club has to both maximise income opportunities and ensure expenditure items remain within the budget set at the beginning of the season. Steve Gawley with the help of Anthony Dignan again showed an enormous commitment to driving income, with sponsorship and membership. Major sponsorship levels were maintained from 2006 but there was a significant increase in player sponsorships with this area reaching an all time high of 24 player sponsorships in 2007. Fundraising income was also significantly increased with the very successful mid season Auction / luncheon day raising over $25,000.

The end result is that the club will pay off most of its debt and has some funds already in place to start the payments for Withers Road. To maintain our high level of professionalism, we need to raise even more funds than before. Moving back into the local community and at Withers Road should enable the club to build in the area of sponsorship, but this will only occur with continued hard work.

Yes it is a new era in the club with the move to Withers Road. But it does not mean that we must work any less to get to our ultimate goal of the best club in NSW. We must continue to strive harder in everything that we do. With this the club will hopefully be able to provide structures on and off the field to enable this too happen.

A special thanks to Anthony Dignan and Peter Physick for their weekly efforts in processing and banking incoming cash and cheques, and to Jodee Vincent at Base Course Management for maintaining the financial reports so desired by the Tax man.

Full financial reports will be made available to the Annual General Meeting.

I now sign off as the Financial Controller of the club with my move back to Melbourne. I look forward to following the good fortunes of the club in the years to come.

______21 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. FACILITIES DEVELOPMENT

CHRIS BILKEY

2007 has been a year of great progress for the creation of a new home for East Coast Eagles. The Withers Road site has undergone a huge transformation from the polluted rubbishstrewn paddock of 6 months ago to a major work in progress. It is on track to be available to the Club for the beginning of the 2008 season.

The new ground will feature a surface second to none in the Sydney competition. State of the art drainage will minimise the likelihood of ground closures. A sophisticated retention and recycling system for runoff will allow the ground to be watered in an environmentally friendly way, protecting us from the “dustbowl” phenomenon common to many grounds. And the surface will be regularly maintained, fertilised and aerated to ensure what starts as a great playing arena, stays that way. The playing arena will be about the size of , and as such, it will be a welcome change from the cramped feel of most of the grounds in the competition.

From a facilities point of view, the ground will feature change rooms bigger than any current home ground, with medical rooms and bestinclass umpires’ facilities. Spectators will enjoy the viewing options, from the grassed “hill” area to the right of the changeroom block, to the seating in front of it.

The facility is owned by Baulkham Hills Shire, and is leased to AFL NSW/ACT. East Coast will be sub leasing the ground from the AFL, and will be its major tenant. Work on negotiating the terms of the lease from the AFL is continuing and is being facilitated by goodwill on both sides. The lease will run for 20 years.

Once the lease is finalised and the ground is open for use, the Club’s next challenge will be to develop a plan for the construction of a clubroom facility that can form the social hub of the Club. This is a major undertaking, and underlines the importance of the continued attraction of sponsors and supporters to make it a reality.

Much credit is due to Peter Physick for his tireless efforts so far, to everyone who has contributed to the design and development, and to Alan McKinnon of AFL NSW/ACT for coordinating much of the process.

______22 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. OUR MOST VALUED SPONSORS

STEVE GAWLEY

Our most valued Sponsors again stepped forward in 2007 and personally, financially and collectively supported the club. The East Coast Eagles Football Club wish to thank and acknowledge the following companies and people for their support.

1. PREMIUM SPONSORS.

PMA Solutions: Guernsey – Back Sponsor.

Phil Okill and his company, PMA Solutions, for the third year in a row, offered their support and sponsorship and were acknowledged throughout 2007 as an East Coast Eagles Premium Sponsor. Phil’s support throughout 2007 was unwavering and solid both on a personal and company level. The staff at PMA consistently threw their support behind the club and in particular, Aaron Spooner, Milly Coinakis and Sue O’Connor were flying the PMA flag at many East Coast functions, games and social events.

Once again in 2007, PMA Solutions sponsorship is greatly appreciated by the Club and we look forward to continuing our association.

Taxi Clothing: Guernsey – Front Sponsor.

In 2006, Taxi Clothing became the club’s front Guernsey sponsor and again in 2007 we thank Mike and Sheryl Pilkington of Taxi Clothing, long time supporters and sponsors of East Coast Eagles, for continuing to be a Premium Sponsor. 3. Match Day Sponsors.

Now in its 4 th year, the 2007 season included Match Day Sponsors for every home game and continues to be a highly sought after sponsorship opportunity.

The Match Day Sponsorship includes signage, entry and public acknowledgement on each home match day and the concept has now become East Coast Eagles home game culture.

In 2007, the East Coast Eagles Match Day Sponsors were:

Round Sponsor 2 The Beauty Shack 3 All State Roads 6 Prestige Packing 7 Base Course Management 10 Coulton Isaac Barber 11 Profiler Sales & Service 14 Wirtgen Australia 18 Wright George Lawyers

Jan and Peter Barber and Staff from Coulton Isaac Barber who were our inaugural “Showground” Sponsor in 2007 and again celebrated their 4 th Match Day Sponsorship. ______25 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. Again in 2007, the East Coast Eagles Football Club puts out its hands to receive the generosity and financial support of our many supporters and sponsors. Another of the encouraging and positive aspects of sponsorship was the acceptance and confirmation of long term support from previous sponsors from a wide field of businesses.

There are many sponsors and supporters who donate both time and money to the club who we may have missed in our summary above, so to them, thankyou. Also, a very big thankyou to the East Coast Eagles supporters who turn up, week after week, and scream for their team. Again, leading the “screams” this year were Laima Physick, Maree Murphy, Viv Merkel, Laurel Abercrombie, Leonie Ure, Margaret Harvey, Jani Evans and the “Angels” and all the many, many others who are true Eagles Coast Eagles supporters.

As I have mentioned previously, the hard working committee, on behalf of the Club, wishes to whole heartedly thank all those sponsors, supporters, helpers, assistants and people who have helped in 2007.

CANTEEN REPORT

RICHARD LEE

Yet again we asked the Kellyville Lions to run the Canteen for the 2007 Football Season. Unfortunately the League decided that they would dictate who would run the canteen for us. After negotiations a satisfactory position for all parties was arrived at.

The Lions only catered for three of our “home” games but as usual, the standard was very high with a good selection of food and drink, prompt service and reasonable prices.

Our sincere thanks once again go to the backbone of the Canteen operations, Kevin and Dianne Coad who were ably assisted by Colleen, Annette, Geoff, Carole, Ruth, John F, Jenny, Ross, Ros, John and Richard.

Once again our Football Club was well served by the Lions Club of Kellyville. The funds that were raised will go to support a local Kellyville family in need.

The Lions are looking forward to 2008 and the East Coast Eagles having a place to call home. The amount of effort involved in ensuring that we have an excellent canteen at different grounds put quite a strain on the Lions resources. With the home games being in Kellyville this strain will be greatly reduced.

______26 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. PRESIDENT’S AWARD

PREVIOUS WINNERS (Including BHAFC recipients)

1984 Anne & Bill McLeod 1996 Greg Fisher 1985 Pam & Bruce Johnson 1997 Laima Physick & Samantha Edmunds 1986 Andy McPhee 1998 John Evernden 1987 Terry Stephenson 1999 Craig Abercrombie 1988 Rob Stone 2000 Graeme Merkel 1989 David Grace 2001 Geoff Cottee 1991 Doug Scholz 2002 Stephen Nash 1992 Robyn Maughan 2003 Graeme Merkel 1993 Henry Yeates 2004 Steve Gawley 1994 Jake Armstrong 2005 Steve Gawley 1995 Paul Madden 2006 Trevor Hangan

The President’s Award was created to recognise the significant contribution to the Club’s wellbeing, by any individual who gives more than could ever be asked for. In a Club the size of East Coast, there is any number of candidates who would be worthy winners.

But each year someone always stands out …

And in 2007, that person is Peter Mann.

Peter came into the Eagles from the Baulkham Hills Falcons when he followed his son James’ career as he progressed from junior to senior football.

Last year Pete devoted his time to assisting the Under 18’s and undertook his apprenticeship in football operations by cheerfully accepting every job that came his way, be it water running, boundary or goal umpiring, time keeping, statistician .. you name it, Pete did it.

In 2007, he would have willingly done all them again, except a greater calling was there when the Reserve Grade Team Manager’s position needed to be filled. The reigning Premiers went into the season with a first year coach and a rookie manager at the helm, but neither was to be denied as together they delivered the ultimate prize in their grade with a back to back Premiership. It’s easy to accept and perform jobs at footy clubs when the individual concerned loves his footy. Like everybody associated with our club, he is an Eagles man through and through and is a staunch supporter of East Coast in the Sydney AFL, but we do allow him to waver a little when it comes to his steadfast loyalty for the Collingwood Football Club!! His passion for the black & white knows no boundaries. His attention to detail for his allocated role and the enthusiasm he carried for the Reserve Grade boys this year was highly commendable indeed. Peter and his wife Diane, happily opened their home for functions, he made parking available for supporters and players at his business premises near the Showgrounds when we played at Sydney Olympic Park and above all of that he undertook everything he did with a smile. It is our absolute pleasure to recognise Peter’s contribution throughout 2007 by honouring him as the 23 rd recipient of the President’s Award.

______27 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. CLUB PERSON OF THE YEAR

PREVIOUS WINNERS (Including BHAFC recipients)

1989 John Mitchell 1998 Richard Lee 1990 Warren Quintrell 1999 Peter Physick 1991 Lindsay Mayo 2000 Craig Abercrombie 1992 Trevor Hangan 2001 Ryan Madden 1993 Greg Crosby 2002 Jan Frost & Scott Abercrombie 1994 Mick Brazel 2003 Phil Bester 1995 Garry Hutchinson 2004 Alan Brotherston 1996 John Meldrum 2005 Matt Stewart 1997 Matthew Frost 2006 Peter Mann

A club is only as good as it people. Be they players, coaches, administrators, managers or supporters. We have many such people at East Coast who happily provide their assistance in a variety of ways. Some do it financially, others do it with time. Some do it with both.

As with the evolving recruitment of players from junior teams, a senior football club needs to also be aware of those parents that are moving through the ranks with their kids, who can then offer their organisational and management expertise to the Club.

In 2007, we are delighted to announce that one such man is the 2007 East Coast Eagles Clubman of the Year.

Alan Moeller grew up in Adelaide and also lived in Melbourne for a long time, so there is no doubt that AFL footy is well and truly in his blood. When he and Tammy arrived in Sydney in 2002, it was to the Baulkham Hills Falcons that Alan immediately turned, not only for Ash and Jason to play at, but to offer them what help he could on the admin and coaching side of things. And what a bonus that was for the Falcons as Alan finished up as the Vice President of Football after initial stints of coaching and even looking after the Auskickers.

As his boys moved into senior footy, Alan has followed them and instantly saw an opportunity for the Eagles to improve their Under 18 representation. Al was the architect of the new U/18 two team structure which required a huge personal effort to bring it all to fruition and his efforts in this area were without question, the single most significant reason the structure and administration worked so well all season.

Any man who has the passion for football like Alan Moeller fully deserves the 2007 ECE Club Person of the Year. Even if he does barrack for the Kangaroos!!

A club is only as good as it people. Be they players, coaches, administrators, managers or supporters. We have many such people at East Coast who happily provide their assistance in a variety of ways. Some do it financially, others do it with time. Some do it with both.

The leading Goal kicker in the Club was for many years awarded to the player who kicked the most across all our grades of footy, no matter where they played or how often. A couple of years ago we changed that to recognise First Grade senior goals only. In 2007 the Banjo Books leading Goalkicker is Ben Rogers with 45 goals for the season.

Reserve Grade Jared Patira (41) Under 18’s Premier Cup Michael Craigie (39) Challenge Cup Daniel McBride (13)

Ben Rogers returned to East Coast in 2007 after a year at Werribee in the VFL. Previously Ben had been a junior at Baulkham Hills and subsequently in the 18’s at the Eagles where he dominated the 2003 season with 65 goals. Although still eligible for Under 18 football in 2004, the selectors saw fit to promote Ben to the senior side where he contributed well through 04 & 05.

Wanting to improve his football, Ben made the call to move to Melbourne to try his luck. He learned well down south and upon his return he went straight into First Grade and was one of only four players to run out in all 18 minor round games.

An elusive and very fast “small forward” as these guys are now known, Ben proved to be an extremely difficult player to match up on. As his reputation grew amongst coaches, he was usually allocated the opposition’s best minder but still managed to finish fifth in the League goalkicking for the year.

Ben was also honoured in 2007 with selection in the Sydney AFL Representative team, which played AFL Canberra and he was also named in the 2007 Sydney AFL Team of the Year.

______29 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. CLUBMAN OF THE YEAR

This award had always automatically gone to the winner of the Best & Fairest trophy in First Grade. The Club Executive chose to introduce revised assessment criteria from 1999 onwards, thus allowing any East Coast player to win. This trophy will now be awarded to that player who displays exemplary form both on and off the field in relation to overall Club contribution. Up until and including 2006, this award was titled Footballer of the Year. PREVIOUS WINNERS

Michael Sankey came to the club from Melbourne and his induction into the Eagles was as smooth as any player we have seen before. This was a just a reflection on his easy going nature and his ability to mix with every player from the youngest to the oldest.

Coming from the strong Eastern Football League in Melbourne to Sydney, he may have been puzzled when he was picked in the Reserve Grade team but he never questioned the decision. He just worked hard at his game and not long after he was rewarded with senior selection. After joining the First Grade team he was rarely out of the named best players and after only 13 games he finished fifth in the Best and Fairest.

It was not only his football skill that endeared Michael to everyone, but his manner in which he treated every single person at the Club. He would make an effort to be involved in everything within the Club. He attended most functions and it was great that his family turned up to almost every game.

His employer Kings Transport came on board as a sponsor and has since seen to help recruitment at the Club by employing more footballers from Melbourne and taking on Adam Floyd as part of his staff.

Michael has been a wonderful addition to the Eagles and we look forward to a long and fruitful association between Michael and the Club.

We congratulate and thank Michael for his efforts in 2007.

______31 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. FOOTBALL OPERATIONS MANAGER

GRAEME MERKEL

Over the past five years in these reports I have endeavoured to provide a brief overview of the season from a football point of view, for an historical record. This year, for the reason you will see later in the report, I will reflect briefly as well on the past five years.

When I took over this position in 2003 the 1 st grade side had finished the previous season on the bottom of the ladder and the Club was carrying a substantial debt into the season. Because of this and the fact that we did not have a home base, it was extremely difficult to recruit players who could assist us in becoming more successful. However facts were facts and we had to move forward. In 2003 we were able to gain some ground and finished 6 th on the ladder. In 2004 we finished 5 th and in 2005 with new coach Rohan Graham appointed well into pre season training, we again finished 5 th . In 2006 with the recruitment of some experienced players and with a coach with 12 months experience in moulding the team under his belt, we finished on top of the ladder, but unfortunately not winning the Premiership.

This year, 2007 was always going to be a difficult year with nine players from the grand final side leaving the Club for employment and lifestyle reasons. However the coaching and playing personnel got down to business winning the first five games of the season. Unfortunately after this, injuries to key players and the loss of Josh Ryder, arguably one of the best big men in the League to overseas employment, the quest to again play in finals became increasingly difficult, and in time impossible. However not everything was lost with the opportunity arising to give promising young players senior grade experience. To their credit, the coaches took this opportunity and a number of these young players played in 1 st grade. The Club (and the players) will benefit enormously from the experience gained from this.

Reserve Grade under the stewardship of first year coach and Club stalwart Jason Duss, produced a Premiership for the Club. Jason and his able assistants, Ryan Madden and Trevor Hangan are to be congratulated on this achievement. One of the more meritorious aspects of this Premiership is the number of young players who played a significant role in the win.

For the first time the Club had two under 18 teams. One in the Premier Cup and the other in the Challenge Cup. Both teams started from a low base and improved significantly during the season with the Premier Cup team only just missing out on the finals. The role of Peter Steer, initially appointed as the Under 18 High Performance Coach and later as Head Under 18 Coach following the resignation of Scott Abercrombie for family reasons, cannot be over stated. He was able to improve the skills of all players and to his credit a number of his under 18 players were promoted to 1 st grade during the season. What he bought to the Club as a coach and as senior team match day assistant played a major role in the development of young players.

I thank Scott Abercrombie, initially appointed as Under 18 head Coach, for his contribution in this inaugural year of two under 18 teams, and more particularly his contribution to the Club over many years. I wish him well in his endeavours on the mid north coast.

Jon Lee, another 1 st year coach took on the difficult role of coaching the Under 18 Challenge Cup Team. He developed as a coach during the season and with his outstanding communication skills was able to instil into his young charges the commitment and desire necessary to become senior footballers.

______32 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. It is impossible to thank every member of the operational staff individually but a few deserve special mention.

Alan Moeller as the under 18 Coordinator, in his enthusiastic manner, spent many hours supervising the under 18 teams through the season. The 1st and reserves format for these teams was an outstanding success with much of the credit for this due to Alan’s endeavours. I thank him for his assistance to the Club.

Peter Mann, Reserve Grade Team Manager performed his role with aplomb, his organisational skills and calm manner under pressure significantly contributed to the Reserve Grade success this year.

Mark Pinchen, perhaps hardly known to many, made a considerable contribution to the Club throughout the year. As well as supporting his son in the under 18’s he attended many opposition senior matches and provided comprehensive reports to senior coaching staff. He also developed statistical programs for the Club and was always available to take on extra tasks without fanfare. Perhaps the reason not a lot of people met him socially at games was because he was always working for the Club behind the scenes. I specially thank Mark for his contribution.

Matt Stewart and Rudi Bylsma, our medical people, in rugby league parlance “Simply the Best” what more can be said?

Terry Mudge, Assistant 1 st Grade Coach, spent countless hours, mostly unseen by members, working for this Club during the year. His enthusiasm for the game has few bounds. His planning and preparation for training and games was thorough, his desire for success, and his commitment to the Club left little to be desired. There is no doubt, that without the encouragement of Terry, Peter Steer and a number of very talented young players would not be at this Club. I thank Terry for his considerable contribution.

Last but not least, Rohan Graham. The Club made a decision not to offer Rohan the position of 1 st Grade Coach beyond this season. The wisdom of this decision will not be known for some time. However Rohan should be proud of his achievements over the past three seasons, achieving a 70% winning ratio and in that time developing a number of young players to 1 st grade level. Under his stewardship, two Reserve Grade premierships were achieved, both with 1 st year coaches at the helm. He was also selected as an Assistant Coach for the Sydney Representative team, something he also should be proud of. Unfortunately he did not enjoy the total support of some within the Club, but I thank him for his substantial contribution over three years and wish him all the best in his future football endeavours.

I will not be standing for election to the position of Football Operations Manager for the 2008 season. I have held the position for the past five years, during which time we have not had a home ground, had difficulties with obtaining training venues and in the initial years, attracting players to a bottom of the table team in North Western Sydney was extremely challenging. During this period I have taken equipment to every training session from November to September (other than for four weeks spent overseas), taken it to games, spent many hours assisting coach’s with their needs, attempting to recruit players and doing everything I could to achieve the ultimate success. I have not been able to do this for the Club.

With the new ground coming on line for the 2008 season, I believe it is an opportune time to retire from the position. Fortunately the position will not be such an onerous one for my successor, as having a home ground will alleviate a lot of time transporting equipment and with the General Manager taking on a lot of my former responsibilities, the time commitment will not be nearly as heavy.

However, I will not be lessening my commitment to the Club and will be seeking to make a contribution in other areas.

______33 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. UNDER 18’s COORDINATOR

ALAN MOELLER

The 2007 season was a landmark year for the U18’s with the Club fielding two Under 18’s teams for the first time. Despite a relatively young squad the Premier Cup team just missed playing finals whilst the Challenge Cup team recorded only two wins but saw the development of many 15, 16 and 17 year olds who will provide the basis for a very strong squad in 2008.

A total of 61 players represented the Under 18’s in 2007, made of up players who had either come to the club from five Sydney junior clubs, had moved to Sydney looking to continue their AFL careers or were first season AFL players.

The opportunities provided by having two under 18 teams were significant and included:

The opportunity for more players to play AFL at an Under 18s level. A more integrated program to attract and develop U18 players in to senior players, and the establishment of closer links with a range of clubs that ensure that the Club will be able to continue to develop its base in the North West and West of Sydney from its new home ground at Rouse Hill.

Ultimately the responsibility of the Under 18’s program is to attract and groom the Club’s future First Grade players. In 2007 the Under 18’s clearly fulfilled that role with four players (Daniel Spiteri, Michael Johnston, Damian Gatte and Ash Moeller) commencing their season in the Under 18’s and progressing through to play a number of First Grade games. The highlight for the season was the progression of 16 year old Daniel Spiteri through all four grades from Under 18’s Challenge Cup to First Grade. Congratulations also to Damian Gatte, Ash Moeller and Nathan Laing on their participation in the Club’s Reserve Grade Premiership.

A good deal of the success of these players and the entire Under 18’s squad must go to the coaches (Scott Abercrombie, Peter Steer, Jon Lee and Tim Lee) who moulded and developed the young squad since the first training run in November 2006. Their commitment to training and match day preparation was outstanding. Thanks too, to the many parents who warmly volunteered their support throughout the year, in particular our two match day managers, Steve Burns and Bryn Whales. The magnificent support of the parental group on match day and at training will be further recognised by the respective coaches in their reports.

On a personal level I would like to thank David Elliott, Mike Tumminello and Tony Nixon from the Bombers football club for their assistance and support in providing us with the opportunity to train (and play a night game) at Wright’s Reserve. I would also like to thank the ongoing support of Shane Jorgenson and Geoff Wood from the Baulkham Hills club for hosting three Challenge Cup games at Charles McLaughlin Reserve (the spiritual home for many of the Eagles players) as well as the Club’s ‘BacktoBaulko’ heritage round against Pennant Hills.

In 2008, we will be seeking to further consolidate our player base and maximise the benefits to the Under 18’s and the Club of the magnificent facilities that we will have the pleasure of using. Many thanks again for the hard work put in by everyone involved in the development of the U18’s in 2007 and I look forward to having the opportunity to help drive that development even further in 2008.

It may be a cliché, but this year was definitely a development year and one for building a foundation for the future. Not only was this aim successfully achieved, but the season presented many quite unexpected highlights on both a team and individual basis.

For the first time, a pre season “Information night” was held to present to prospective players, the aims and plans for season 2007. This was a very successful event and was very well attended by players, senior club officials and coaches. Their support for this event set the standard for the year ahead and was a very significant factor in helping bring the U18’s and senior teams closer together to make the East Coast Eagles truly “one club”.

Player development was a key theme for the U18’s this year and detailed plans were developed and implemented throughout the season, but started with an intense pre season that commenced in November and was closely aligned with the senior program. Excellent numbers at pre season, in excess of 30 players to most sessions, further reinforced the enthusiasm and aspirations of the U18 management team, and all the planning and preparation to introduce a second U18 team into the Challenge Cup competition became reality. This alone had a huge positive impact on season 2007, as it enabled us to expose the players to senior football in a way that replicated our senior teams, with selection being based on player performance and the movement of players between the Challenge and Premier teams to assist in their personal development.

A special thankyou to Scott (Aber) Abercrombie, Alan Moeller and Graeme Merkel who all put in an enormous amount of work in the off season to prepare for season 2007 and without the efforts of these people, our season would not have been anywhere near as successful. Game plans and strategies were developed very early on and Aber did an outstanding job in preparing the players for the season

______35 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. ahead. His footy knowledge and commitment to the players and club is an example to us all and set the foundation for a great season.

With the excellent support of the Senior Coaches, Rohan Graham and Terry Mudge, we introduced the players to the same game plans, strategies and disciplines that the seniors would be adopting and this made the transition to senior football less daunting and helped reinforce the “one club” mindset.

In addition, we implemented a “Mentor Program” for players who were chosen to try out for seniors. This initiative was embraced by our club Captain, Jon Vlatko, and his personal commitment to the program was a major reason for its success this year. Like many of our plans, there was room for improvement, but a small step in the right direction is better than no step at all.

As mentioned earlier, player development was the key aspect of our planning and this is where we really excelled this year, and to see several U18 players representing the club at the highest level was testament to the efforts of the players and coaches. A season highlight in this area had to be 15 year old Daniel Spiteri being voted Best on Ground in the Reserves winning Grand Final. Watching “Boony” receive his reward was a very special moment for him, the U18’s in general and a very proud moment for me.

The season saw us win eight games and miss out on the finals by one game which was a huge disappointment to the players and coaches who had put so much into this season, but when put into perspective, this was a very successful season for the U18 Premier Team. Bringing players from 12 different teams and melding them into a cohesive unit was always going to take time, and as the season progressed we saw the players develop into a very tight, skilful and committed unit that played some exceptional football.

A big thankyou to Scott Abercrombie for his outstanding contribution to the team this year. Aber laid the foundations for a successful season and coached the Premier Team for the first half of the season until he stepped down as Premier Coach due to personal commitments. For someone as dedicated to the players and East Coast in general, this was a huge decision, and the loss of Aber will be felt by the club for years to come. Personally, I learned a great deal from Aber and I thank you for your professionalism, friendship and commitment to the U18’s and the East Coast Eagles. We all wish Scott, Nicole and Jack all the best with their move to Port Macquarie.

To the players, a very big thankyou! You all welcomed me to the U18’s in pre season and were receptive to new ideas and strategies and when Aber handed over the coaching role to me mid season, you all backed me 100% and I could not have asked for better support. It was indeed an honour to coach the Premier team and seeing the development of so many players, as players and young men was extremely rewarding.

Congratulations to the Premier Team Award winners, Josh, Nipper and Nathan.

The successes achieved this season would also not have been possible without the assistance and commitment of a number of people.

To Rohan and Terry, your encouragement and mentoring was greatly appreciated and I can not thank you both enough for the support you provided me throughout the season. Both of you along with Jason Duss provided the U18’s with some excellent development opportunities which I know the players respected enormously.

Congratulations to Jason and the Reserves on a wonderful season and back to back Premierships.

A special thank you to Jon Lee, who took on the role of Challenge Cup Coach and absolutely excelled. His management of the Challenge team was outstanding and without his efforts we would not have achieved half of what we did this year. His passion and dedication is a great example to the players and

______36 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. he certainly gained the respect of the players, parents and coaches, and it was indeed a pleasure to work with you Jon. Thanks mate.

To the game day assistants, Doug Scholz, Wayne Burcher, Tim Lee, Peter Mack and Mark Pinchen, thank you all for your contribution and your help, input and feedback made Scott and my job easier and more rewarding. Thanks.

To perform the role of Team Manager well, requires a special person, and Steve Burns was indeed special. Week after week he performed the role with great professionalism and I know the players and I really appreciated your efforts.

Establishing two U18 teams this year was a very significant undertaking and would not have been possible without the support of the Board and in particular, Anthony Dignan and Graeme Merkel, who both supported the initiative and Scott and I in all aspects of footy throughout the season. For this and your friendship, support and guidance I sincerely thank you both.

Supportive parents make a massive contribution to their sons and the club in general. This year we had a great bunch of parents who were willing to assist whenever needed and provided the players with the positive encouragement and support. To the parents who ran water, goal or boundary umpired, acted as runner, or generally assisted with the running of the team, I thank you all, and thank you for the personal support many of you provided me, it was greatly appreciated.

The new role of U18 Coordinator was introduced this year and Alan Moeller took on this role and set a standard that will be very difficult to match in the future. His passion for all things footy, saw him as the architect of the new U18 two team structure which required a huge personal effort to bring it all to fruition, and his efforts in this area were without question, the single most significant reason the structure and administration worked so well all season. Al, a very special thank you for your support and friendship.

Last but certainly not least, I want to thank my family for their wonderful support all season. To my wife De, thanks for your ongoing support and patience, I truly appreciate it. To Justin, thanks for supporting me and the team while injured and acting as team runner in the last half of the season.

To Damon (Pistol), you were there for me and the team every week and did what ever was asked of you and more. I could not have asked for a better “right hand man” and you made me a very proud coach and Dad. Thanks mate.

In summarising, I believe we set a new level of professionalism at the U18 level this year and we certainly achieved our two pre season goals of establishing a sound foundation on which to build and developing players to play senior football.

I look forward to next season and seeing many U18’s representing the East Coast Eagles with pride and passion.

Thanks.

It’s a fantastic position for a Football Club to be in, when the wealth of junior talent enables them to field two U18 teams. And for the first time in 2007 the East Coast Eagles were able to do just that.

The 2007 season was never going to be about winning a premiership in the Challenge Cup competition but completely about developing a group of young men, a big chunk of which were still eligible for U16 Football, and giving them the relevant skills and nurturing them to go on and play Reserve and First Grade Football for ECE in the years to come.

Throughout the season all the team developed not only as a group but as individuals and many of them had played well enough to give themselves the chance to play Premier Cup. The players who stayed within the Challenge Cup team came a long, long way and the improvement for them, not only in games but in their training and preparation, was a result of their commitment and willingness to listen and learn. At no time did the team drop their heads and their courage and commitment at all times was terrific, always doing what was asked of them. Congratulations.

Another great aspect of the 2007 season for the ECE Challenge Cup was the emergence of new players from other clubs that wanted to come over and play at a higher level and for a more professional club. These new players to our club had great seasons and have already indicated their desire to come back to the ECE to play Football in 2008 and beyond.

Lindsay Mayo was the runner for the season in 2007 and did a terrific job. He also took on the role of taking the team for the warm ups and making sure they were ready and focused to take the field. Lindsay in years gone by had coached a number of the players, so his insight into their skill was also a great help.

Bryn Whales put his hand up at the start of the season to be the match day manager. It was great to be able to arrive at a game and only need to worry about coaching and preparing for a game, knowing that everything was taken care of behind the scenes.

There was also a group of Dad’s that whenever something was asked of them they were happy to help out. Whether that was running water, the boundary or waving the flags, they were happy to support their sons and the Football Club and jump in and carry out the role for the game. Wright, Randall, Bailey, McBride, thanks for your help in 2007. And a special mention goes to John Tarrant for doing all of these things on more than one occasion throughout the year. Thanks Mate.

A very big thank you goes to two of my best mates. Firstly, Timmy Lee, whose help I sought out a few weeks into the season after deciding that I needed some help on the sideline. He provided me with a calming influence in some of the pressure times throughout the year and was also a great sounding board for me. Thanks Brother. Secondly, Ryan “Dog” Madden, whose knowledge of the game, support and advice throughout the year was greatly appreciated.

Thanks for a fun filled and history making 2007 and good luck to all at the East Coast Eagles in 2008.

Season 2007 was a truly remarkable experience for many people involved with the East Coast Eagles Football Club. Not was it just a Premiership season for the Reserve grade playing group, or back to back Premierships for the handful of players who remain from 2006, but it was the depth of all parties involved, which made this year so special. The players have had tremendous support from all coaching staff, medical staff, wives, girlfriends, parents, sponsors and supporters. It was truly a club Premiership and I know each and every one of the players would not hesitate to see it that way.

It only seemed like yesterday when I was approached by Graeme Merkel in respect to taking on a coaching role for season 2007. Initially I was hesitant because I still see myself as a player. I made it clear that I could assist or if I could be assisted, then it may make things more manageable. Before I knew it, I had Ryan Madden and Trevor Hangan as assistants to help me coach and Peter Mann to manage the side. With trustworthy individuals like these and a player list as potent as was presented to me, it was too tempting to turn down.

I always knew it was going to be a huge challenge to take the reins of a Premiership side, but that was part of my decision to take on the coaching role. I soon found out that coaching wasn’t a walk in the park. It’s not necessarily the pressures of game day or injury troubles that make it hard, but instead, having to look into the eyes of your own mates and explain why they might not be getting a game on the weekend. However, these are the expectations that come with the job and in the process they have made me a better person.

With the club having lost a number of senior players from season 2006 it was going to open the door for those who were hungry enough, to step up into senior contention. The challenge was set from day one of pre season. I’m proud to say, that many of the guys who responded to this challenge, finished the season with a Premiership medallion around their necks. It’s not easy at times to dedicate three nights per week to a pre season program in summer. However, the boys’ determination was evident in the way they presented themselves through a fairly gruelling three months of pre season training.

______44 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. 2007 again presented the club with the opportunity to expose young talents to senior football. It was pleasing to see that we managed to bleed a number of young players who could have comfortably finished their season in the Under 18’s instead. Andrew Polkinghorne, Ash Moeller, Damian Gatte, Michael Johnston, Daniel Spiteri, Nathan Laing and Scott Lear all displayed why they are the future of the football club. Their hunger, passion and pride in wearing the Eagles’ jumper were rewarded in their selections to play with a Premiership team.

In all reality, any football club has the ultimate goal of winning a First grade Premiership. However, we must remember, that winning back to back Reserve grade premierships sets a very strong foundation for the future of the East Coast Eagles football club. The gap between the two levels is becoming narrower as each season progresses and the potential for players to be rewarded is more a reality than ever before.

I must thank and pay tribute to the people who made the vision of a Premiership a reality for season 2007. Without all of your input, none of what was achieved could have possibly been achieved.

To Ryan Madden and Trevor Hangan. Two truly remarkable mates, whose knowledge and experience in Sydney football is extraordinary. You both have helped make this one of the club’s most memorable football seasons. Your weekly input, communication, assistance with training sessions and selection of teams is much appreciated. The role of coaching this season has been made a pleasure with both of you by my side. Thank you.

To Peter Mann. Your decision to join us in our quest for glory, typifies the person you are. As I have now seen first hand, managing a senior football side is not an easy task, but I don’t remember ever seeing someone handle it as well as you have this season. Your ability to manage the players’ concerns, fill weekly boundary umpire, goal umpire and water boy positions plus do it all with a smile on your face, I think shows the true character you have. Thank you.

To Peter Physick, Steve Gawley, Anthony Dignan and Graeme Merkel. All of you have played a very important role in keeping the football club functioning in a professional and friendly manner. A lot of your work goes unseen by many eyes, but we, as coaches, know that what you do helps make matches happen week in and week out.

To Rohan Graham, Jason Coulloupas, Terry Mudge and Phillip Bester. Your support throughout the season has been extremely beneficial. Each of you has assisted me in your own unique ways. At times, coaching can seem like a vicious circle that creeps back up on you, but your experience and confidence in helping us achieve what we set out to achieve, is much appreciated.

To Scott Abercrombie, Peter Steer, Jon Lee and Alan Moeller. Your support of the club’s younger players as they have been exposed to senior ranks has been exceptional. I want to thank you for your efforts in assisting us with information and summaries about the club’s future stars. Thank you.

To the wives, girlfriends and parents of the players. Your individual support has compiled into a force which has been behind the players from the word go. Late night dinners, lending cars so players can get to training and organising your weekend calendar in accordance to the draw. Just some of the aspects which have made playing football more enjoyable for the playing group. Thank you.

To the sponsors, members and supporters of the East Coast Eagles Football Club. You are the life source of the club and it’s a pleasure to share the spoils with every one of you. You have supported us not just financially, but willingly in attendance at matches. Nothing beats having a devoted supporter base to get behind the players week in and week out. Thank you.

To the medical staff. It’s unbelievable to consider how far the club has come in the past few seasons in respect to employing medical staff to attend all training sessions and games and treat injuries of every nature. You guys do a tremendous job in keeping the players as fit as possible and maintaining their

______45 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. bodies in a competitive state, despite the nature of some of their injuries. Without a doubt, our medical staff set a benchmark for professionalism. Thank you.

To Peter Bleus, Tim Physick and Terrance Lieschke. You guys have been an inspirational leadership group. You have led by example all season and helped pave the way for the younger blokes to follow. Many thanks.

Most importantly, to each and every player who has been part of the miraculous journey throughout the season. You have all been part of something special. A moment where you have bonded friendships for a lifetime. Each and every one of your efforts has been part of the product which the East Coast Eagles Reserve Grade have produced this season. Be proud of your achievements. Be proud of one another. And be proud of your club. Thanks for believing and trusting your own judgements.

“There’s no such thing as luck in football. You create your own luck and then you make the most of the opportunities that come your way. The East Coast Eagles Reserve Grade didn’t just show this in season 2007, but proved it as well”

I wish all players, their families and our supporters the best in whatever they choose to do. Whether retirement looms for some, or the excitement of perhaps playing First Grade. Or whether work takes us to other parts of the country or the world. 2007 was a successful year because people at the East Coast Eagles Football Club wanted it to be that way.

Let’s hope that in the years to come we can have people just as determined to assist in the outcome.

The best way to describe the 2007 season journey was that of a roller coaster, plenty of highs, plenty of lows, lot’s of twists and turns and ultimately a sick feeling in your stomach at the end. The year was always going to be an extremely tough one after the exodus of many high quality players from last years losing Grand Final side.

A preseason which had low attendance levels made it tough to get our game plan and the relevant fitness required to execute this at the level we wanted. Despite this however our season got off to a really good start with five straight wins. Any thoughts of repeating our season of 06 were dispelled pretty quickly when we came thudding back to earth with a couple of losses. It was a very disappointing time in the season as the massive injury list continued to grow and players struggled to play their best football on the weekends.

Probably the biggest low for the coaching staff was the loss to West’s in the middle of the season in a game we just had to win. It was a very bad loss for the club and one we had to win to get our season back on track. The positive outcome that eventuated from our mid season slump was the opportunity to look at the younger players at the club and reward their efforts in the lower grades with senior selection. Many players received senior selection before their time but acquitted themselves very well and if they continue to work hard at their game will become very valuable servants of the football club.

The season ended with a myriad of different scenarios culminating with us required to win more games than there were remaining. Unfortunately for us when the music stopped we were left without a chair and had to watch the finals from the side lines.

As I am departing the football club I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people that have helped me this year. Firstly to the coaching staff, and in particular Terry Mudge for his valuable assistance, it has been greatly appreciated. The other match day assistants in Phillip Bester and Peter

______49 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. Steer, thanks for your input and making the match day a lot less stressful. I will always treasure some of the comments that were forthcoming and most of those will go with me to the grave.

Thanks to Ryan Madden for helping out on match days, I loved watching you in action. To Jason Duss and Trevor Hangan the work you did with the Reserves was great and your Premiership medallions are a worthy reward for your efforts during the year. To Matt Stewart and Rudi Bylsma and the medical team, once again your efforts were of the highest standard, thankyou.

Thankyou to Mark Horan for his work on the bench. Thank you to my skipper, Jon Vlatko, I have valued both our football relationship and our mate ship over the years and hope this will continue whatever the future holds. My biggest thank you without doubt goes to my Football Manager Graeme Merkel who has been one of the greatest influences on my football career. I value his honesty, support and great sense of humour in a sport which can test all these attributes constantly. He has helped guide both myself and the football club through very tough stages and help make the club a place you want to be.

I would also like to thank my partner Lea she has seen first hand how tough life can be and has always supported me. She didn’t help me win enough games, but I suppose no one is perfect.

In the words of the great Forest Gump “and that’s all I’ve got to say about that”.

======

Season 2007 started off on the back foot after one of the most successful years in the ECEFC history.

With the news that a number of players were moving on for personal reasons, and with these players being an important part of our side, the rest of us knew as a group we had to dig even deeper to build on that winning culture we set last year.

Although there were a number of players putting in the hard yards before Christmas, once pre season started up again in Jan 2007 we had a healthy list of players and everyone seemed to have that hunger in their eyes to go that one step further the determination was alive.

It was a tough couple of months of solid running with the inclusion of Sean L’Estrange and his very strict pre season program. Then came the recruits Aian McLennan, Damien Russell and Adam Floyd. These lads had all decided to become an Eagle and with the return of Benny Rogers and Matt Arbon, all of a sudden the side was looking even stronger again. We all knew as a playing group and coaching staff that last year was over, and we must all look to the future and take each game as it comes.

Before we knew it, we were five wins from five games and with the likes of Russell and Rogers kicking goals, our competition were starting to worry again. Unfortunately injuries then struck and we had players such as myself, Craig Robinson, Jason Coulloupas and Ryan Smyth playing half fit on occasions. The coaching staff then relied on a giving 'the next generation' of young Eagles a crack at 1st grade footy and to their credit they all handled it well.

As the year went on we found ourselves slipping out of the top four with losses to the top sides such as Penno, North Shore and St George. We realised that finals footy was not just going to happen so we needed to make every remaining game count, but alas there were some games which we had every chance to win but we just didn't get over the line. Finishing 5th at the end of the minor round, and obviously missing the finals, was probably where we deserved to finish.

There were a few positives however for season 2007. We can proudly say that that having seven debutants this year is a true indication that we have a healthy list of juniors at our club. With the likes of Anthony "stubalino" Stubbs (West Coast Scholarship holder), Michael "mouse" Johnston

______50 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. (Hawthorn Scholarship holder), Damian "gats" Gatte, Daniel "boonie" Spiteri, Ashley "ash" Moeller, James "Jnr Sauce" Mann and Jared "JP" Patira running around next year and with a few senior games under their belt, as Captain I am filled with encouragement as I know they will let nothing stand in their way to helping our club into another finals campaign. Well done to all the young Eagles and thankyou.

What a successful and positive year the Reserves boys had, led by their fearless leader and coach Jason Duss. To win a Premiership at any level is not easy, and I made sure I was one of the first to congratulate each one of them after the game. The way the boys went about their finals campaign is a credit to all the work the twos coaching staff put in, and I'm sure they will never forget the time they beat the Penno boys by one solid point. Their togetherness, brotherhood and genuine care for fellow team mates is what I believe got them over the line in the end and is something that the 1st grade side must adopt for 2008. Well done you bunch of legends.

Finally, I would personally like to thank the coaching and support staff on all their efforts this year. From Rudy Bylsma all the way to Rohan Graham, I believe they did a good job and credit should be given where credit is due. I thank the supporters for coming out to see us play and assure you that you will be cheering us all the way to finals next year. It takes a lot of good people to make a good footy club and I truly thank everyone who was on board with us in 2007. I know Rohan won't be with us in 2008 and on behalf of the boys we sincerely wish him all the best and thank him for his efforts over the past three years as our head coach.

The boys and I look forward to the challenges ahead next year and with our home ground now ready to go... watch out 2008, cause we'll be back, stronger and hungrier.

______57 2007 YEAR BOOK EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB Inc. PLAYER MILESTONES REACHED DURING 2007

The Match Statistics sections for each grade are included within the overall team reports elsewhere in the Year Book. Those statistics are now ranked according to total number of Sydney AFL First Grade games played for East Coast Eagles and any Sydney AFL First Grade games played for Baulkham Hills Falcons prior to and including 1999. However it is important to also maintain a register of the number of games played for the “Club”. The definition of the “Club” for this purpose is all matches played with East Coast Eagles and Baulkham Hills in any grade or age group. These individual statistics are shown against each player’s name in the respective Match Statistics for each grade. Congratulations to the following players who reached personal milestones during season 2007.
