Rapid Range Expansion of the Feral Raccoon (Procyon Lotor) in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, and Its Impact on Native Organisms
Rapid range expansion of the feral raccoon (Procyon lotor) in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, and its impact on native organisms Hisayo Hayama, Masato Kaneda, and Mayuh Tabata Kanagawa Wildlife Support Network, Raccoon Project. 1-10-11-2 Takamoridai, Isehara 259-1115, Kanagawa, Japan Abstract The distribution of feral raccoons (Procyon lotor) was surveyed in Kanagawa Prefecture, central Japan. Information was collected mainly through use of a questionnaire to municipal offices, environment NGOs, and hunting specialists. The raccoon occupied 26.5% of the area of the prefecture, and its distribution range doubled over three years (2001 to 2003). The most remarkable change was the range expansion of the major population in the south-eastern part of the prefecture, and several small populations that were found throughout the prefecture. Predation by feral raccoons on various native species probably included endangered Tokyo salamanders (Hynobius tokyoensis), a freshwater Asian clam (Corbicula leana), and two large crabs (Helice tridens and Holometopus haematocheir). The impact on native species is likely to be more than negligible. Ltd., Japan (e-mail: [email protected]) Abstract: National highway No.135 is a main road that supports the regional economy and sightseeing spots in Izu Peninsula. Atami is a busy city and leading resort with many hotels and resort apartment buildings, attracting more than 8 million visitors every year. In late 2003/early 2004, warning phenomena appeared just before a landslide destroyed a slope along the highway. The road office administrators were concerned that the community would be seriously paralyzed if the landslide intercepted traffic and caused hotels and buildings to collapse. There had been several small landslides at the bottom of the slope in August and September, causing traffic jams and the successive rupture of water service pipes buried alongside the road. However, the administrators did not realize that the series of phenomena were caused by landslides. Two months later in November, a water service pipe ruptured again, and the road office finally investigated the slope. This time, a landslide scarp and cracks were found on the slope, and the administrators realized that the series of small August/September phenomena had been caused by a landslide 75 m long and 75 m wide. Monitoring of landslide activity by extensometers was quickly started, by which time the slide velocity had accelerated to more than 5 mm/day. On December 6, the sliding velocity reached 24.8 mm/day, and a landslide was predicted to occur at noon on January 5. -

To enhance and strengthen port functions and measures for cargo collection, taking into consideration the conditions surrounding the Port of Kawasaki in recent years, such as wide-area linkage of the three Keihin ports (Port of Kawasaki, Port of Yokohama, and Port of Tokyo), and the Port of Kawasaki's selection as a Strategic International Container Port, the City of Kawasaki revised the harbor plan for the Port of Kawasaki, which focuses on the years from 2023 to 2028, in November 2014. This plan plays an extremely important role as a guideline for development, use, and conservation of the Port of Kawasaki, based on the role of this port within the three Keihin ports, as well as demands from port-related personnel, location companies, citizens, and the government. In an aim to increase industrial competitive strength in the metropolis, and protect and develop industries, employment, and livelihood based on reinforcing the linkage among the three Keihin ports, policies for the harbor plan are being established for each function in order to realize a Port of Kawasaki that supports industrial activities and contributes to the stability and improvement of the local economy and civilian life. After the war, in 1946, the Japanese government designated 115 cities as war-damaged cities, which would be reconstructed as official war-damage reconstruction projects based on land readjustment projects. War-damage reconstruction became an important challenge for the country’s post-war restoration, but its course of events and achievements has not been made sufficiently known to the public. By providing basic information about the designated war-damaged cities, such as area, population, the extent of the wartime destruction and the responsible public body (i.e. prefecture or municipality) for reconstruction projects, this study emphasises the diversified nature of these cities, their damage and the lines of approach in taking responsibility for their reconstruction.
