Costello Together ENRICHING LIVES Costello Together ENRICHING LIVES Fortnightly Newsletter Issue 92 17 January 2020 www.costelloschool.co.uk Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, Colleagues and Friends… I hope you were all able to enjoy a wonderful Christmas and your New Year has started as purposefully as ours has. The students have returned with a reinvigorated zest for their studies and it has been great to be in and out of so many lessons seeing students actively looking to discuss their learning with me. I'd also like to thank you for your unwavering support as we take this opportunity to re- emphasise our high expectations around work and behaviour; the students have responded in kind and risen once again and this is down to you working alongside us. The weeks ahead are busy and there is much to look forward to - not least a number of upcoming parent evenings, the selection of the future Head students from Year 10, and the Year 8s taking their first tentative steps into thinking about their GCSE courses. We gather momentum on a number of improvement projects around the site and I hope for further opportunities to engage you all with the work we are doing. With best wishes, Randall Jull Headteacher Please keep a look out for and share our Facebook Posts and Tweets, there are so many amazing things that happen in and outside of school that we would love to share with you and the community. www.facebook.com/TheCostelloSchool https://twitter.com/costelloschool Upcoming events, diary dates and messages Tea and Talk – Monday 3 February Tea & Talk Y11 Parents’ Evening – Thursday 6 February Monday 3 February Y8 Options/Parents’ Evening – Thursday 13 February Parents and carers are welcome to drop in between 3.30pm and 5pm to discuss any matters relating to their children at school Term Dates Academic Year : 2019 – 2020 Spring Term 2020 Term Begins Monday 6 January Half-Term Monday 17 February – Friday 21 February Term Ends Friday 3 April Summer Term 2020 Term Begins Monday 20 April Half-Term Monday 25 May – Friday 29 May Inset Day Thursday 2 July Term Ends Friday 17 July Early Finish 12.20pm RECYCLING OUTGROWN UNIFORM Could you please consider donating to the school PE kit no longer needed or outgrown also school shoes, good quality but outgrown. Happy viewing. The Curriculum ‘Game Changer’ Award CERTIFICATES AWARDED FOR THE ‘GAME CHANGER’ (January) for consistently demonstrating the school values of Humanities Modern Foreign Languages moreHannah than anyone Marsh else in Year 8 7L2 Olivia Bradley 7H2 Rhiannon Jones 8H2 Sid Doublet 8B1 Sarah Robinson 9B1 Isaac Owen 9B1 Mackenzie Keenan 10L2 Maisie Gilbert 10B1 Joshua Goldsmith 11C2 Faith Gristwood 11L1 Congratulations to these students for consistently demonstrating the school values of more than anyone else in their year Stem club "turning" their hands to new skills In the last few weeks our STEM Clubbers have been developing their own plumb weights. These look simple but need the application of a number of complicated metalwork processes to get them to look right and work precisely. Using a range of different tools and machines, their weights are shaped and even given that knurled texture that makes them easy to handle. Over the next few weeks, the students will be developing a steel threaded plug to connect the string on the end and seeing how well balanced they are. Combined Cadet Force Costello School's Combined Cadet Force (CCF) works in partnership with Lord Wandsworth College. We believe that CCF offers a range of amazing opportunities for our students to develop skills and confidence in ways that very few other methods can do. The activities involved in CCF include: Military training such as flying or gliding, fieldcraft, weapons training, drill and turnout Leadership training including command skills and coaching Personal skills including first aid, navigation, bushcraft and survival Adventure training including mountain biking, climbing and canoeing In the CCF we place a high emphasis on the development of leadership in the cadets and the ability to think on their feet and problem solve. The cadets also get involved in activities which develop teamwork, communication skills and greater self-reliance. Most importantly it also provides the cadets with the chance to challenge themselves through new activities and experiences and step outside their ‘comfort zone’. Joining the CCF is not a commitment for the whole of their time at Costello although we hope that many will stay - realising the obvious benefits it brings when the time comes to apply to Sixth Form, Universities and employers. In addition to the regular sessions on a Friday afternoon, there are a number of camps and courses that run throughout the year. These include field days, overnight camps, adventurous training weeks in the Lake District and Snowdonia and a military camp in the Summer Term. We expect that all cadets attend at least one Summer Camp, either Army or RAF. Students can join our CCF group in January of Year 9 with some taster sessions offered through the year. Places are limited each year due to transportation to Lord Wandsworth. If you'd like to know more, please contact Mr Page ([email protected]) Proud Please see amazing DT projects from Miss Young’s group (before Christmas) - Very proud of my Year 9 and 10 classes and their pizza cutter. Lovely German work from Miss Watt’s Year 9s (also pre-Christmas). It is brilliant seeing all the fantastic work students are producing. Proud Y9 Weihnachts Geschichten, some great work using the perfect tense! Please see photographs of the excellent cell models that Mrs Watkinson’s Year 7 class made for their history topic. From Dr Richens’ Year 9 chemistry class. These pictures are of a reaction, as seen down microscopes, of copper wire with silver nitrate solution. The silver is more reactive than the copper so we see silver crystals growing. They looked like winter forest landscapes and were very beautiful. U14 girls football vs Brighton Hill. The girls played brilliantly in their first 9-a-side game, winning 4-2! The Year 9 netball team playing Challoner B tonight - another brilliant performance to finish off the year winning 12-0, with Sarah Robinson nominated as Player of the Match. A great win for year 8 netball girls v Challoner Congratulations to 7C1 who recorded the most minutes on average per student last week on Lexia. Here they are enjoying their prize!! House Update Culture at Costello Game Changers 8B1 – Megan Langham 8H1 – Isobel Edwards 8B2 – Keira Killner 8H2 – Matilda Strange 8C1 – Isaac Senin 8L1 – Ruby Bullock, Freddie Backhouse, Ellie Neave 8C2 – 8L2 – Robert Lyon Most of our students have had a great start back after the Christmas break, working hard to keep their progress going. The students who are nominated are put forward not just because of single big events but usually for just living our values of Enjoy, Respect and Achieve every day. We love to recognise the everyday heroes who strive to make a more positive school. Sport District Table Tennis Tournament Costello sent eleven students to take part in the annual individual district competition held at Aldworth School. Unfortunately the turnout was lower than normal, however, the Costello players enjoyed lots of success, with five making it through to represent the district in the county finals, which are held at Testwood Sports College, Totton in February. In the under 16 boys competition Jack Rushbrook and Adam Fixler both did well. After progressing through the pools, they ended up drawn against each other in the semi final stage, with Adam winning that encounter. This meant he progressed to the final and he also beat the player from Aldworth to become district champion and will now progress to the county finals. In the under 13 girls competition the players were drawn in one pool due to the numbers involved. All played well (Mia Chandler, Beth Read and Gaby Martin) but ultimately Rose Wellington topped the group winning all her games to become district champion and Megan DaCosta was runner up, only being beaten by Rose.
