November 2014 Monthly Performance Pack Monthly Performance Pack November 2014 Christopher Duggan, BBC iPlayer BBC Communications 07753302778 | [email protected] Monthly summary – November 2014 • November saw a record-breaking 334 million requests, up +5% on the previous month and an impressive +26% on the same time last year, with the strong TV schedules and wintry weather giving people a reason to turn to BBC iPlayer. • TV requests were at an all-time high at 255 million, with big titles continuing to dominate. The Apprentice was very popular with all four episodes generating more than 1.5 million requests. Doctor Who also continued to perform well with the final two episodes in the top 10. And new BBC One drama The Missing also proved a hit on BBC iPlayer, with the first three episodes all making it into the top programmes list. • There were 80 million radio requests in November, equalling last month’s record performance. The return of I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue, and The News Quiz were popular last month, along with the Radio 1 and Radio 2 Breakfast Shows. • Average daily requests increased in November to 11.1m. Consistent with previous months: • The profile of BBC iPlayer users has evened out over time in terms of male/female ratio, but remains strongly under-55 in terms of age, which is younger than the typical TV viewer or radio listener’s profile (although more in line with home broadband users) • BBC iPlayer is used for TV at roughly the same time of day as linear TV viewing, although there is proportionally more daytime and late-peak use. For radio, BBC iPlayer is used far more in daytime than traditional radio listening, which peaks at breakfast-time Slide 2 Index Page Content 4-8 Monthly BBC iPlayer requests by media type and device type 9 Notes about the data in this report 10 Weekly request latest 6 months 11 Top TV programmes 12 Top radio programmes 13 TV and radio requests - live vs catch-up 14 Use of BBC iPlayer for TV by time of day 15 Use of BBC iPlayer for radio by time of day 16 Profile of BBC iPlayer users 17 Glossary Slide 3 Total Total monthly iPlayer requests BBCacross all Please refer to slidePleaseto refer report. thisin charts barin estimatesour including in requests 11.5m in capturednot was data Some to BBCiPlayer. to turn reason a peoplegiving weather wintery and schedules TV with strong year, last on November record to a increased BBC to iPlayer Requests Millions of requests per month Jan…16 45 62 Feb 18 50 69 Mar 27 52 78 Apr 24 52 76 Requests for radio programmes Requests for TV programmes May 25 55 81 25 51 76 9 Jun for guidefor Jul 26 62 87 Aug 25 59 85 Sept 26 61 87 6m inNovember, and September Oct 26 71 97 29 78 107 notes Nov Dec 28 86 114 Jan… 32 88 120 Feb 30 87 116 Mar 33 84 118 Apr 30 93 123 May 33 97 130 Jun 31 86 117 2014 November and September August, Jul 27 87 114 Aug 28 91 119 Sep 28 86 114 Oct 31 108 139 Nov 32 109 141 Dec 32 114 145 Jan… 35 127 162 - Feb 32 117 148 breaking Mar 38 122 160 Apr 33 108 141 May 37 122 159 Jun 36 120 157 not are we date,or deviceby assess accurately cannot we sincebut Jul 37 117 153 Aug 40 115 155 million 334 Sep 40 113 153 Slide Oct 44 134 178 Nov 46 139 185 4 Dec 44 143 187 Jan… 46 145 191 Feb 46 146 192 Mar 48 142 190 + November, in Apr 45 140 185 May 49 138 187 Jun 42 125 167 – Jul 45 130 175 Aug 46 151 196 Augustin requests 3.5m around estimate we Sep 50 150 199 Oct 49 165 213 40 167 207 Nov 5 Dec 42 174 217 platforms, since 2009 Jan… 61 212 272 +26% and month previous on the up % Feb 68 194 262 Mar 72 200 272 Apr 74 183 257 May 76 181 257 Jun 69 170 239 Jul 77 164 242 Aug 74 159 234 Sep 69 176 245 Oct 63 200 263 Nov 68 198 266 Dec 69 202 271 Jan… 74 242 315 Feb 67 234 301 Mar 72 248 320 Apr 64 204 268 May 71 202 273 Jun 70 190 260 Jul 66 165 231 Aug 64 179 243 SOME DATA Sep 75 184 259 MISSING Oct 80 237 318 , Nov 80 255 334 Please refer to slidePleaseto refer report. thisin charts barin estimatesour including 11.5m in capturednot was data Some Average Average Average Millions of requests per day (average monthly) Jan 09 0.6 1.6 2.1 September in requests Feb 0.7 1.8 2.4 Mar 0.9 1.7 2.5 daily Apr 0.8 1.7 2.5 Daily TV requests May 0.8 1.8 2.6 9 Jun 0.8 1.7 2.5 to in increased also requests for guidefor Jul 0.8 2.0 2.8 daily BBC Aug 0.8 1.9 2.7 Sept 0.9 2.0 2.9 Oct 0.9 2.3 3.3 notes Nov 1.0 2.6 3.6 Dec 0.9 2.8 3.7 Jan 10 1.0 2.9 3.9 Feb 1.1 3.1 4.2 , and 6m in November, November, in6m and , Mar 1.1 2.7 3.8 Daily radio requests Apr 1.0 3.1 4.1 May 1.1 3.1 4.2 2014 November & September August, Jun 1.0 2.9 3.9 Jul 0.9 2.8 3.7 iPlayer online Aug 0.9 2.9 3.8 Sep 1.0 2.9 3.8 Oct 1.0 3.5 4.5 Nov 1.1 3.6 4.7 Dec 1.0 3.7 4.7 million 11.1 Jan 11 1.1 4.1 5.2 Feb 1.1 4.2 5.3 Mar 1.2 3.9 5.2 Apr 1.1 3.6 4.7 May 1.2 3.9 5.1 not are we date, or device by assess accurately cannot we since but Jun 1.2 4.0 5.2 Jul 1.2 3.8 4.9 Novemberin Aug 1.3 3.7 5.0 1.3 3.8 5.1 Slide Sep Oct 1.4 4.3 5.8 requests 5 Nov 1.5 4.6 6.2 Dec 1.4 4.6 6.0 Jan 12 1.5 4.7 6.2 Feb 1.6 5.2 6.8 – Mar 1.6 4.6 6.1 another all another Apr 1.5 4.7 6.2 – May 1.6 4.5 6.0 August, in requests 3.5m around estimatewe Jun 1.4 4.2 5.6 Jul 1.4 4.2 5.7 Measurement Aug 1.5 4.9 6.3 correction Sep 1.7 5.0 6.6 Oct 1.6 5.3 6.9 - Nov 1.3 5.6 6.9 high. time Dec 1.4 5.6 7.0 Jan-13 2.0 6.8 8.8 Feb 2.4 6.9 9.3 Mar 2.3 6.4 8.8 Apr 2.5 6.1 8.6 May 2.4 5.8 8.3 Jun 2.3 5.7 8.0 Jul 2.5 5.3 7.8 Aug 2.4 5.1 7.5 Sep 2.3 5.9 8.2 Oct 2.0 6.5 8.5 Nov 2.3 6.6 8.9 Dec 2.2 6.5 8.7 Jan-14 2.4 7.8 10.2 Feb 2.4 8.4 10.7 Mar 2.3 8.0 10.3 Apr 2.1 6.8 8.9 May 2.3 6.5 8.8 Jun 2.3 6.3 8.7 Jul 2.1 5.3 7.5 Aug 2.1 5.8 7.8 SOME DATA Sep 2.5 6.1 8.6 MISSING Oct 2.6 7.7 10.2 Nov 2.7 8.5 11.1 TV and radio: Requests for programmes by device type The device profile for BBC iPlayer was stable on the previous month with mobiles and tablets making up 42% of all requests. • The New Aural Actuality: an Exploration of Music, Sound And
THE NEW AURAL ACTUALITY: AN EXPLORATION OF MUSIC, SOUND AND MEANING IN THE COMPOSED FEATURE DOCUMENTARY PODCAST by Benjamin Richard Phillip Horner Canterbury Christ Church University Thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2019 Abstract This practice-led thesis explores the creative techniques and philosophies used in composing feature documentary podcasts and how listeners engage with the material and make meaning from it. Podcasting as a medium presents a new and so far unexplored way of interfacing with audio documentary and this study works to demonstrate crucial differences from radio practice in terms of intention and expression, how material is made, consideration for its audience, and how its programmes are distributed. Using post-structural theory, specifically Deleuze and Guattari’s ideas on interconnected networks of affective transmission, podcasting’s relationship to radio is explored, as is how listeners make meaning through their interaction with both the heard material and the devices upon which it is accessed. These theories are then applied to the characteristically open remit of the audio documentary to study how speech, music, sound and silence may be understood to generate meaning, emotion and a sense of immersion in the listener. It is suggested that modes of programme access, listening customs, and interpretational symbolism work together to impart information vital to the ability to connote and denote what is being heard, and that in this way the composed feature can be situated very closely to musical practice and engagement. Taking cues from musical and cinematic analytical practice three podcast programmes are closely scrutinised for an understanding of their constituent material, structural shape, and potential affective transmissions, before interviews with their producers are presented to discuss conceptual intentions and execution.

  • Audience Council England
The BBC Trust's Service Review of BBC Music Radio Submission from the Audience Council England 1. Introduction 1.1 The Audience Council England is an advisory body of the BBC Trust. Our role is to provide the Trust with insights on the views, needs and interests of audiences in England. In order to do this we are supported by a network of panels, one in each of the BBC’s twelve broadcasting regions in England. 1.2 This submission is based on discussions at each of our regional panels, and subsequent consideration by the Audience Council England. 2. Summary 2.1 The BBC’s music radio services - Radio1, Radio1Xtra, Radio 2, Radio 3, Radio 6 Music and Asian Network - together offer a diverse range of high quality, creative, varied and distinctive content that is widely appreciated and valued by audiences. We consider that the six music radio stations are performing well against many aspects of their service licences, delivering an impressive breadth of entertaining, engaging and informative programming and providing some outstanding new, UK and live music which appeals to a variety of different audience interests. 2.2 The BBC’s music strategy sets out “to be the most authoritative voice in music globally, entertaining audiences and guiding their personal music journeys”. This ambition mirrors the expectation of our panel members who tell us that their appreciation and enjoyment of the music radio portfolio comes from hearing both the familiar and well-known on their radio stations of choice while also discovering fresh and innovative music and cultural content.
