Foreword This collection of writings provides an intensive reading of dress fashions of royalty which intensified Portuguese political power over the Kingdom of Kotte. The royalties were at the top in the social strata eventually known to be the fashion creators of society. Their engagement in creating and practicing dress fashion prevailed from time immemorial. The author builds a sound dialogue within six chapters’ covering most areas of dress fashion by incorporating valid recorded historical data, variety of recorded visual formats cross checking each other, clarifying how the period signifies a turning point in the fashion history of Sri Lanka culminating with emerging novel dress features. This scholarly work is very much vital for university academia and fellow researches in the stream of Humanities and Social Sciences interested in historical dress fashions and usage of jewelry. Furthermore, the content leads the reader into a new perspective on the subject through a sound dialogue which has been narrated through validated recorded historical data, recorded historical visual information, and logical analysis with reference to scholars of the subject area. -

Except for a few political treatises, there were virtually no distinguished works of secular interest. Thus, it was criticized for the lack of socio-political meaning. Amarasekara, a renowned writer and critic, maintained that the novel represents a certain weakening of socio-political dialogue in the country after achieving independence from the British. Compared to Wickramasinghe’s famous trilogy, which is explicitly ‘social’ since it deals with an evolution of a certain capitalist class, Virāgaya is understood to be a work that deals more with the psychological than with the social. This paper argues that when read as a postcolonial novel, contextualizing it in its specific postcolonial condition, Viragya appears to be much more ‘social’ and ‘political’ than any other novel 54 SLJH 42 (1&2) The Sri Lanka Journal of the Humanities (2018) 42: 1-2, 54-85 that appears to be so. Aravinda (the literal meaning of the name being ‘the lotus’), the central character of the novel, is a man who embodies detachment, which is an important Buddhist value. His detachment is shown by the way he maintains a certain aloofness vis-à-vis the accepted social norms, which is often interpreted as a legacy of his Buddhist upbringing. -

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles The Military Economy of Seventeenth Century Sri Lanka: Rhetoric and Authority in a Time of Conquest A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in History by Cenan Pirani 2016 © Copyright by Cenan Pirani 2016 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION The Military Economy of Seventeenth Century Sri Lanka: Rhetoric and Authority in a Time of Conquest by Cenan Pirani Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Los Angeles, 2016 Professor Sanjay Subrahmanyam, Chair From the end of the sixteenth century, the overseas administrative arm of the Portuguese Crown, the Estado da Índia Oriental, sought to gain complete territorial control of the island of Sri Lanka and outlined the tenets of the military project dubbed in administrative letters, “the Conquest of the Island of Ceylon”. Such efforts however would be impeded by military rebellions (ie. mutinies and desertions) by native military personnel in Portuguese service, where a rebellion that occurred in 1630 severely weakened the Estado's position in the island from which it could not recover. The specific event, the death of a Portuguese general at the hands of his own Christianized native troop, left a deep imprint on Portuguese memory. Decades later, the chronicler Fernão de Queiroz claimed the event, which paved the way for the European's eventual removal from the island by 1658, bore testament to the unbridgeable cultural and religious schism between the Portuguese and the native Sinhala people, an established viewpoint in current historiography. This study focuses attention on the documentation in Portuguese, English, Spanish, and ii Sinhalese written during the more active moments of the conquest period (1580-1640) in order to test such well-established views. -

The young ravishing girl from an elite family whose strong character and headstrong behaviour make her parents unhappy. They send her abroad to complete her studies hoping that it would change their daughter’s strange behaviour for the better. The young girl and the nanny’s son who becomes a lawyer later on with the help of the noble family, build a strong friendship from childhood. The parents are trying to find a suitable partner to their young daughter who has come back after completing her studies. The young girl and nanny’s son are falling in love. The nanny‘s encouragement and the blessings strengthen the young couple’s love. Meanwhile the young girl falls in love with the music played by a hideous looking middle aged man who lives in the neighborhood. Her passion for the music leads her to a magnificently melodramatic climax as this man imagines that this young girl loves him and his entire existence builds around the young girl’s love. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 a Abstract In this study an attempt is made to examine the developments in the history of Ceylon from the death of Parakramabahu I to the end of the reign of Parakramabahu II covering a period of roughly a century (c.1180 to 1270 A.D.)* The unity and general prosperity which the country enjoyed under Parakramabahu I gave way to dissension and disintegration soon after his death. The forces of disintegration moved on until about four decades after Parakramabahu1s death Dambadeniya emerged as a new centre of activity and of resistance to foreign invaders with the founda tion of a royal residence there. The difficult problems concerning the disintegration of the Poionnaruva Kingdom so soon after reaching its cul mination under Parakramabahu I, and the subsequent rise of Dambadeniya to importance under parakramabahu II form the subject of this study. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 ABSTRACT The present study is an attempt to examine the institution of kingship in Ceylon from the fourth to the tenth century A.D, A brief survey of the poli tical background of the period is included in the first chapter as a prerequisite to the understanding of the various stages of the evolution of the concept of king ship in Ceylon; the rest of this chapter is devoted to a brief discussion of the sources utilized in this study. The second chapter deals with the various titles, throne names and personal najnes used by the kings of this period, in the discussion of which we have analysed the various factors that led to their selection, particu larly the underlying religious and political signifi cance of the titles and their importance with respect to the growth of kingly power.
