Jesus is just like all the other babies and just like we were once. No matter how many times we see a new born child we still pause and wonder at the mystery of creation. At the heart of Christmas is the wonder of a birth and also the promise of our rebirth and a new hope of God’s presence with us. God comes to us not in pomp or splendour but in lowliness and the poverty of a borrowed stable. Such a God is difficult for the powerful and the hard of heart to grasp, but the lowly and the humble searchers fall down before him as he lies in the manger. We are also invited to come to look, to learn and to worship this baby who Emmanuel: God with us. Much love, Colin Newborough welcomes a new head teacher and the community wish her well and offer our support Having worked in primary education for nearly twenty years, I am delighted to have been appointed as the Headteacher of Newborough Church of Primary School. After completing my degree and teacher training in London and starting my teaching career working there, I relocated to fifteen years ago as my husband, who is a serving member of the Armed Forces, was posted to this area. Since relocating, our family has grown in number as we now have two daughters and a labradoodle named Charlie. During my spare time I enjoy going to theatre, meeting up with family and friends, dog walking and reading. I do have a gym membership but it’s fair to say that I don’t use this as much as I should. Newborough & Parish Council are working on many undertakings at the moment, including road improvement and road safety within the Parish. After representation to senior Peterborough City Council Safety Officers to try and improve the safety on various roads in the Parish, improvements are expected. Some of which are listed below: - Decoy Crossroads Speed limit to the south of the Village Safety Issues on Willow Drove Safer crossing for schoolchildren from Soke Road to School Road Improving the traffic calming on the Thorney- Road The Parish Council has requested various maintenance work on the roads around the village from the Highways Department of the City Council. The Parish Council would like to thank the Speedwatch team for their hard work in trying to reduce the general speed of the traffic throughout the village. The Parish Council with the help of our local City Councillors, have arranged for safety measures to be implemented around the School. Fernie Close Playing field is due for a long-awaited revamp. Plans are being drawn up for new equipment to be installed, and funding from various Grant schemes are being applied for. These will be match funded by the Parish Council. A considerable amount of work has been carried out to try and improve the maintenance of the allotments. The support of the allotment holders is greatly appreciated. After a disappointing start to the season, the Parish Council, along with its contractor, have carried out considerable improvements and maintenance of the churchyard, Fernie Close Play Area, and the Parish Council controlled grassed areas in the village. Some play areas and pathways are maintained by the City Council, and every effort has been made to keep these areas in good order as well. Peterborough City Council have approached the Trustees of the Village Hall and the Parish Council with regard to an asset transfer, i.e. to divest themselves of the responsibility of the maintenance of the Village Hall. Discussions are ongoing. There are many other issues the Parish Council is addressing at present, but unfortunately, all improvements seem to take a long while to conclude, as there always appears to be many fences to climb to reach a conclusion. Parish Council meetings are usually held on the 3 rd Monday of the month, although this does sometimes differ, so the dates are displayed in the Parish Notice Board in School Road, near the church, or on the website. www.newboroughpc.org.uk

ISSUE 46 Page 5 NEIGHBOROUGH, BOROUGH FEN & MILKING NOOK NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH ASSOCIATION

There is concern in our community that no current Neighbourhood Watch scheme is operating. At a time when crime figures nationally are very high, it is in all residents interest to be aware of local crime, anti-social behaviour, fly-tipping to name but a few. The mere fact that crime figures are low in and around our community should not allow us to become complacent. A small number of Newborough residents are attempting to resurrect and re-form the previous successful Neighbourhood Watch Scheme. Your support at the Village Hall at our first ‘Open Meeting’ will be very welcome. A formal date in January 2018 to be arranged and notices etc. displayed with the relevant date. The more representatives of Newborough, Borough Fen & Milking Nook that attend and get involved in the scheme, the more successful it will become. Remember it’s our community and a little effort from us all, will go a long way.

Page 6 CHURCH AND COMMUNITY NEWS 2017 Season Review For Newborough Cricket Club It’s been a season that contained a fair degree of anticipation quite a lot of excitement but ultimately for the Saturday 1st team a little disappointment. We fielded four senior teams each weekend there were games with the final analysis being: Sat 1 st team Played 18 Won 13 Lost 4 1 Abandoned Sat 2 nd team Played 18 Won 12 Lost 4 2 Abandoned Sun 1 st team Played 18 Won 9 Lost 9 Sun 2 nd team Played 12 Won 4 Lost 7 1 Abandoned The Saturday 1 st team led the division for large parts of the season before hitting the buffers with 3 losses in the last 4 games to narrowly miss out on the promotion places. Led by Kyeran Ellery, we played an attractive brand of cricket but ultimately came up just short. On a positive note, Vamshi Parvathaneni was the number one bowler in the entire league, which is quite an achievement - well done Vam. On the batting side Ross Harris was our top performer before his season was cut short by the harvest with Andrew ‘AJ’ Rowland being very consistent and reliable throughout. Sadly a lack of availability cost us dear at times and left us short of depth. AJ won the Players Player trophy. For the Sat 2 nd team, it was a much happier end to the season, as they secured 2 nd place in the league and promotion to division 3 in 2018. Although it was great to see a number of our youth players playing regularly in this team, it was the old guard that performed brilliantly throughout as veterans John Clifton and Dennis Compton led from the front with the batting and Nick Lawton did the business with the ball. Not surprisingly the three of them picked up the main awards for the team. Sunday 1 st team had a mixed season with some very good results intermingled with some poor ones leaving them a comfortable mid-table at the end. Without doubt the best performances were in the John Wilcox Cup where we easily dispatched Burghley Park before producing the shock of the tournament by beating Premier League Grantham. Despite putting up a good fight with a creditable performance in the semi-final we lost to Oundle Town. Vamshi won the bowler of the season award (including 9 wickets for 16 runs in one game) and captain David Cooper the batting award as he scored 700 runs in the season, which was a very good effort. David also scooped the player of the year award. Sunday 2 nd team - we put in some really good performances during the season with most of our teams featuring at least 5 sometimes 6 of our youngsters. They acquitted themselves well and continue to improve as players, with the most notable performance being Harry Creevy’s lifetime best of 43. Others bowled very well without much reward and the future bodes very well for the club. Nick Lawton took the most wickets but it was captain Duncan Rowland who claimed the bowling honours award. Batting wise it was a fantastic season for Paul Richardson who – in his return to cricket after a number of years out - averaged 96 runs per innings to win the award. Other notable performances were from Curtis Dixon who took lots of wickets and scored lots of runs before being posted overseas with his job. As well as the seniors, we ran 4 junior teams again in 2017, with two teams at u-11 age group, an u-13 team and an u-15 team. We put a number of players forward for county trials and had 3 successful - George Woods, Orlando Todisco and Poppy Murray and also had Matty Mills classed as a county player for the u-13 team even though there was no team in his own u-12 age group. Well done everyone, we are very proud of you all and hope to have some more chosen for county next season. On the pitch: The u-15 team Played 8 Won 4 Lost 4 The u-13 team Played 8 Won 4 Lost 4 The u-11 Gold team Played 8 Won 5 Lost 2 1 Abandoned The u-11 Silver team Played 8 Won 3 Lost 5 These results represent a good progression through the age groups as most of the u-11 players were stepping up from u-9 last year and likewise the u-13 were stepping up from u-11. Some really good performances throughout and in most of the cases, the only defeats were against our bigger rivals that had far more players to pick from. Many thanks go to Kyeran Ellery, AJ, Paul Richardson, Michael Davis and Mark Jacobs for all their efforts on the training ground and of course to all the parents for getting the children to the games. Kevin Woods and Michelle Mills were also thanked for scoring at every match.

ISSUE 46 Page 7 Page 8 CHURCH AND COMMUNITY NEWS On August 15 th this year our 4-year old daughter, Halle, had a successful life changing operation at Great Ormond Street Hospital to improve muscle stiffness caused by a neurological condition called cerebral palsy. This operation is not available on the NHS so in January we started a social media campaign to raise the £55,000 that we needed. We managed to raise £10,000 in the first month and after more than 20 events, starting with a race night at the village hall and finishing with a 26 mile walking marathon from the Bull, we managed to raise the the cost of the operation with the help of friends and people we had never met before.

Halle is currently back at Newborough school but still needs a lot of physiotherapy, which the NHS can’t provide, so we would still appreciate any donations for physiotherapy sessions and specialist aftercare equipment that is needed.

We would like to say a massive “thank you” to the Newborough community for their support and generosity, all of the people who arranged fund-raising events and all of the strangers who gave their time and money.

Thank you all very much, Fran, Tim and Halle Heriot

Other comments made were:- u if this could be held quarterly, this would be great for individuals needing guidance or help u thank you, this was a great pooling of services, making it a great idea and I hope it keeps going on a regular basis Feedback from the amazing Support Services who attend were as follows:- u Age UK were delighted to attend the Chit Chat Café and spoke to a lot of residents about issues and concerns, providing them with details of services, especially our Information and Advice Service. We were delighted with the positive feedback from residents and existing volunteers who already use our services. Congratulation. I attend quite a few events and this was extremely well organised and supported. u Thank you for inviting Peterborough Council for Voluntary Service (PCVS) to the Chit Chat Cafe. Our Service has been privileged to give support and advice for the event. We particularly enjoyed meeting and chatting with people in Newborough community and we were able to offer advice and accept referrals such as for the handy person service, fuel poverty, etc. Newborough community has an amazing number of individuals motivated in supporting one another and looking after the health and wellbeing of its residents. It's truly wonderful to witness. We would love to continue working together with you. The organisation and delivery of this event would not have been possible but for the commitment of the volunteers, various baking donations and the generosity of Tesco’s Werrington and Mandairs local store in Newborough. We would also like to thank Newborough and Borough Fen Parish Council for their continued support and the Village Hall Committee for the use of the Village Hall to facilitate this event along with the support services who attended such as Age UK, Peterborough Council for Voluntary and Wellbeing Services, Alzheimer’s Society, Carers Trust Peterborough and Dementia Action Alliance Please look out for future events that will be displayed within village public notices boards and within the local establishments in Newborough. ISSUE 46 Page 17 New Pub Landlady aiming to put The Bull into the Heart of the Community The Bull’s new landlady, Jacki Wood, pulled her first pint at The Black Bull in Hackney, London, aged 18. Now, after nearly 40 years of raising her family alongside managing pubs, bingo halls and working within catering, she has taken the plunge to owning her first pub leasehold at The Bull in Newborough. Jacki explains: “I’m looking forward to injecting my East-End sense of community, fun and family into The Bull. I’ve already started to host some party nights, but I also hope to offer traditional family Sunday Lunches and create a children’s play area. I really want to try to put The Bull into the heart of this friendly community. “We can now show all the top sports games on BT or Sky Sports. We can even show two games at the same time - one the 50” bar TV and also one on the 40” function room TV. However, if there isn't a game on then we’ll just turn off the TV and put on the jukebox. I'd also like to try to introduce a priced-drop for lager and ales during football matches in the future (watch this space)." Ales are on tap with one main one for a month (currently London Pride), along with two guest ales. New promotions have been introduced such as shots with three for £5… (ask at the bar). In the short time Jacki has arrived in the village, she has not stopped… she’s painted inside of the pub, installed a pool table and a juke box with balanced speakers (so it’s not too loud) plus she's also taken time to ask her locals what they’d like to see at their local pub. Having listened, she’s now introduced free pool on a Tuesday night, a free juke box on a Friday night playing every style of music as well as introducing all the party evening listed below, which the multi-skilled landlady DJs herself. There’s already an existing mixed darts team, but Jacki would like to hear from any ladies in the village wishing to create a separate darts team. Jacki also hopes to eventually have two darts boards. The dominos team also continues to thrive, playing matches and practicing in the pub every week. Jacki concluded: “I’d just appreciate it if the local community would come along and enjoy what I’m offering. If you run a local organisation and you are looking for a venue for any future meeting, Christmas luncheon or family occasion, then please consider The Bull and just call me to discuss your needs. “We’ll all definitely have some great fun over the next few months, including some fantastic Christmas and New Year's celebrations, but please can I just take this opportunity to ask our guests to try to remember to be very considerate to our neighbours when leaving the pub. Thank you."

Upcoming events in the function room Every 1 st Sunday of the month – Monthly Quiz Night (8pm)- £1 a person, the winners take all (free buffet); Thank you to Fluff and Ponte for being Quiz Masters. Saturday 23 rd December – Christmas Family Party Night (from 6pm), Kids fancy dress disco party 6pm – 7:30pm with Santa making an appearance to give all the children a gift (no charge, but please donate towards the pub’s local charities); Children are welcome until 9pm. Sunday 24 th December - Christmas Eve Traditional Carol Sing-along (7:30pm) Monday 25 th December - Christmas Day Opening 11am – 2pm with the jukebox playing Christmas songs and complimentary mince pies to get the village into the spirit of the festive season. The pub will be closed for the rest of the day. Tuesday 26 th December - Boxing Day Opening 11am – 3pm. The pub will be closed for the rest of the day. Sunday 31 st December – NYE Private Party (tickets only - available from the bar) with all the great party hits and countdown to midnight… this includes a family-friendly area within the function room (8pm till late) FOOD - assuming that the kitchen is refurbished, the intention is to offer Sunday Roasts from November every Sunday from 12pm-5pm. It will be a traditional roast using all fresh ingredients. Adults £8.95 each or 2 for £16; Children £4.99 each or 2 for £8; OAPs £5.99 or 2 for £10. THE FUNCTION ROOM – is always available for hire for buffets, lunches, birthday celebrations, parties, etc. For more information, please call Jacki on 01733 810999.

Jacki would like to thank Chris Pont, Newborough Young Farmers, her friends, family and all the residents of Newborough for their support of the Bull fireworks display.

Page 18 CHURCH AND COMMUNITY NEWS I AmusLt Ltel l QyouU allI, wEhTat a OreaNl pl eTasuHre iEt w Fas,I tRo bEe Wpart Oof aR teKam FthaRt pOut Non Ttwo super pyrotechnic displays in the village this year. For once the weather was kind, village politics played no part and everything went to plan. The first on Halloween weekend, at the Coronation Playing Field, was a perfectly timed display to music. An uplifting film score by Scottish composer Patrick Doyle, which even had grizzled old campaigner, Nick Harris, close to tears. Hmmm, not easy I know. Money raised in the region of £800 will help with the upkeep of the venue and the De-Fib kits in the village. The planning for this event started just after Easter and took over 100 hours to get this right so we could load it into our firing system. Not just a box of matches! The second at the Bull on Armistice Day, came right out of the blue and was planned at very short notice. Bull landlady, Jacki Wood, really wanted to keep the pub display going, and make it special as it was her first year, so we accepted the challenge. After a minute’s silence to mark the day we did a short display to music (“Hymn To The Fallen”, Kathryn Jenkins) and the atmosphere was emotionally charged. We then followed with 10 minutes of pyro mayhem to get everybody back to reality and end on a high. The Newborough Young Farmers, who were key to the success of both events, raised £1200 on the night for their charities, one of which is the Air Ambulance. Special thanks to: Mark Marrison (Illuminatus Pyrotechnics) who spent hours making both projects work. Rob East who provided quality sound equipment on both events. Bob “fluffy” Collin for sheer hard work, safety and sanity. The Jacobs family for their never ending support. Playing Field Crew: Nick Harris and the cricketers, Maz Lawton, Andy Walker, Michelle Mills, Mark Goodale and John “Firestarter” Harris. Newborough Young Farmers. See you next year… Ponty 810524 STOP PRESS! ELECTRICIAN TACKLES GERMAN SHEPHERD AND GETS A SHOCK! The mystery as to why a well-schooled trade’s person, of an electrical type nature, should charge at the biggest dog in the village has not yet been solved. The normally sane, safety conscious electrician, who shall remain nameless, received a “nip” to the left hand on Armistice Day when he tried to stop a huge Alsatian from running to Crowland. A spokesperson for J and M Electrics said, “We were just watching the fireworks and listening to Kathryn Jenkins. Things were OK until the first salvo went up, there was this almighty bang and then he just went loopy! It’s not like him at all. He has been really well trained, got all his certificates and everything…why he would put his hand in a dog’s mouth beggar’s belief! Thankfully he can do most things with one hand so we don’t expect a drop in productivity.” Alsatian “Diesel” was unavailable for comment. It is thought the sound of shell fire could have triggered something from deep within his psyche and the urge to go for a run took over.

ISSUE 46 Page 19 Friends Of N.ewbOorough school .N.S. Working in partnership to Create an improved environment for YOUR Child FONS Update - Winter 2017 Welcome everyone to the first FONS update of the 2017-2018 academic year. Last year we set ourselves the target of funding a new climbing wall for the children. Anyone who has been by the school recently will have seen this has been up and in use by the children for much of this year. We are now discussing with school options for further playground equipment and will also be providing the money for the school to buy a brand new sound system to make the children’s assemblies and Christmas Plays even more special!

Bags2School Update One of the ways that Newborough villagers have supported the school in the past is through “Bags2School”. Our most recent collection was at the beginning of November and it was one of our best ever. The picture (right) may look like the aftermath of a bin collector’s strike, but for us it translates to extra money to provide things to make the children’s time at Newborough school even more enjoyable. Thank you to everyone who participated and if you missed out, there will be another collection early next year.

ISSUE 46 Page 25 Get Fitter And Feel Better – One Step At A Time! Personal Trainer Yvonne Goodsell explains how… At last spring is here and we can look forward to feeling our best through the summer – once we’ve shifted all the weight we’ve put on over winter! It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the task of getting fitter and losing weight, but the trick is to take it one step at a time. Curling up on the sofa, being addicted to daytime TV… none of these have to stop. You just need to redress the balance. Step 1 Build feel-good exercise into your everyday routine. The NHS recommends 150 minutes (5 x 30 minutes) of moderate activity a week. This can be as easy as going for a walk after tea or doing the school run on foot. Step 2 Have fun and make new friends at an exercise class. There are lots of activity groups within the village who meet during the day and in the evenings. Step 3 Take control of your diet. A ‘food and mood’ diary is a great way to identify why some days you feel you can take on the world, yet other days you struggle to get off the sofa. Eating a balance of carbohydrates, good fats, protein, vitamins and minerals will up the feel-good factor and raise your energy levels. Try www.myfitnesspal.com as a guide. Step 4 Treat yourself! Nothing should be off limits, just eaten (and drunk) in moderation. One bad week is OK – 52 in a row is a problem!

RURAL CRIME REPORT Theft from Motor Vehicles is still an issue, people really must stop leaving items on display and remove all valuables when leaving their car. Cars parked up whilst dog walking/running are currently being targeted. I would just like to say a huge thank you to the residents who visited our Safer Home Event in Eye in September and I hope you found it helpful. We had some great feedback and many residents stayed for tea and a chat which was great. Thanks again to Eye Parish Council for the use of The Leeds Hall. This was the second event we have held this year, the first being in Hampton in May. We do hope to continue with them and we are constantly updating our product boards with new information, including our new Smart Home section. I’ve attached a few photos of Helen and I at the event. Stay Safe...... It is really important that you check that all doors and windows are locked at night and if you have a driveway/garden then think about investing in a driveway alarm – simple (two part) movement sensor. One half for the exterior of the home and a battery or plug in device for the interior. An alarm will ring internally if an intruder should enter the garden area or driveway. Simply switch the device on before you go to bed. Great for protecting, not only the home, but also the shed/garage and car at the same time. These devices can easily be found online. Just google driveway alarm or if you would like more details on the device then drop me an email. Many Thanks. Newborough Families can have - ALL - 15 or 30 hours of Free Childcare per Week The Teddy Bears Inn Day Nursery can now offer local families all the maximum free childcare hours per week; Monday to Friday from 7:30am-6:00pm*. Parents wishing to take advantage of this new government free childcare scheme for their three - four year olds are welcome to make an appointment for a show round the nursery to experience their ‘Good, with elements of Outstanding’ OFSTED childcare practice. The nursery has been supporting local families in Newborough for over 15 years and in September successfully transitioned seven local children into Reception class at Newborough C of E Primary School, as well as other local schools. The nursery also provides ALL children with a hot lunch, using locally-sourced farm meats, and healthy snacks throughout the day – at no extra charge. It was nice to see everyone settle back into routine so quickly in September including our new little faces. Our main focus this term has been colours, each week the children have explored a different colour with lots of colour coordinated crafts and activities. The colours have also been linked the different seasons and celebrations.

We held our open morning at the end of October where existing parents had to chance to look at their children’s files and speak with their key workers. It was also nice to welcome some new faces.

After such a success, we are looking forward to our children performing their Christmas story later in December. This year we will be hosting the performance over 2 days to allow all parents and family to have the opportunity of watching their children. We have also booked our favourite magic man Jason Fenn for our end of term children’s party on the last day of term.

Fundraising As always our fundraising continues to be important to us. We have several events planned in December:

Our annual Christmas Fayre will be held on Saturday 9 th December from 11-2

Children’s Christmas Disco Sunday 17 th December from 2-4 tickets are £5 which includes refreshments and a gift.

Looking ahead to the New Year we will be hosting a fashion show on Friday 2 nd March 2018 please look at for more information about this. Tickets will go on sale from January.
