Bud. 27 March 2007 THE GAME I kept waiting for some information to quiet my eyes but the checkerboard engraved on the polished granite bench between two mysterious Chinese characters (all writing is mysterious to a stone) was empty of chessmen, the whole affair was wet from snowmelt and spring’s fraudulent caresses, there was no game in this game. How could we sit down on this matrix, could I put a pebble on the smooth stone like the old Jew puts on a grave (every stone is a tombstone), we could leave it behind us and walk down into the drenched meadow towards the far trees we never quite get to, down the path to the hidden stream where it pools out for a moment and already skunk cabbages are starting to make their move but still this simple-minded sixty-four compartmented conundrum hangs in the mind, all numbers are the men and the board, the pawns and the queen, the silly little blue faience lumps Egyptians used to while away long years of being dead. -

Each summer at Poets House, we celebrate all of the poetry published in the previous year in an all-inclusive exhibition and festival of readings from new work. In this year’s Showcase, we are very proud to present over 3,000 poetry books, chapbooks, broadsides, artist’s books, and multimedia projects, which represent the work of over 700 publishers, from commercial publishers to micropresses, both domestic and foreign. For twenty-three years, the annual Showcase has provided foundational support for our 60,000-volume library by helping us keep our collection current and relevant. With each Showcase, Poets House—one of the most extensive poetry collections in the nation—continues to build this comprehensive poetry record of our time. -

Bruce Elder Ryerson University Among the most erudite of the San Francisco Renaissance writers was the poet and Zen Buddhist priest Philip Whalen (1923–2002). In “‘Goldberry is Waiting’; Or, P.W., His Magic Education As A Poet,” Whalen remarks, I saw that poetry didn’t belong to me, it wasn’t my province; it was older and larger and more powerful than I, and it would exist beyond my life-span. And it was, in turn, only one of the means of communicating with those worlds of imagination and vision and magical and religious knowledge which all painters and musicians and inventors and saints and shamans and lunatics and yogis and dope fiends and novelists heard and saw and ‘tuned in’ on. Poetry was not a communication from ME to ALL THOSE OTHERS, but from the invisible magical worlds to me . everybody else, ALL THOSE OTHERS.1 The manner of writing is familiar: it is peculiar to the San Francisco Renaissance, but the ideas expounded are common enough: that art mediates between a higher realm of pure spirituality and consensus reality is a hallmark of theopoetics of any stripe. Likewise, Whalen’s claim that art conveys a magical and religious experience that “all painters and musicians and inventors and saints and shamans and lunatics and yogis and dope fiends and novelists . ‘turned in’ on” is characteristic of the San Francisco Renaissance in its rhetorical manner, but in its substance the assertion could have been made by vanguard artists of diverse allegiances (a fact that suggests much about the prevalence of theopoetics in oppositional poetics). -

Smith McMaster University – English & Cultural Studies ABSTRACT This dissertation draws upon literary and cultural studies, hip-hop studies, and hip-hop feminism to explore Black women’s critical engagement with the boundaries of Black womanhood in the cultural productions of street literature and hip-hop music. The term “troublesome” motivates my analysis as I argue that the works of writers Teri Woods and Sister Souljah and of rapper Lil’ Kim create narratives that alternately highlight, reproduce, and challenge racist, classist, and sexist discourse on Black womanhood. Such narratives reveal hip-hop to be a site for critical reflection on Black womanhood and offer context-specific examples of the intersectionality of hip-hop generation women’s experiences. This project also incorporates ethnographic methods to document and validate the experiential knowledge of street literature readers. -

a n Rae "Dazzling Hybrids" The Poetry of Anne Carson The subtitle of A n n e Carson's Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse only hints at t h e variety of g e n r e s that the Montreal poet employs. In Autobiography of Red, Carson brings together seven distinct sec- tions—a "proemium" (6) o r preface on t h e Greek poet Stesichoros, trans- lated fragments of S t e s i c h o r o s ' s Geryoneis, three appendices on t h e blinding of Stesichoros by Helen, a l o n g romance-in-verse recasting Stesichoros's Geryoneis as a c o n t e m p o r a r y gay love affair, and a mock-interview with the "choir-master"—each with its o w n style and story to tell. Carson finds fresh combinations for g e n r e s much as s h e presents myth and gender in a new guise. Although men appear to b e t h e subject of both the romance and the academic apparatus that comes with it, C a r s o n sets the stories of Stesichoros, Geryon, and Herakles within a framework of e p i g r a m s and citations from Gertrude Stein and Emily Dickinson that, far from being subordinate, assumes equal importance with the male-centred narrative when Stein supplants Stesichoros in t h e concluding interview. The shift in speakers and time-frames in t h e interview, as well as the allusions to the myth of I s i s , emphasize Carson's manipulation of m y t h i c forms. -

The Autobiographical Self: Phenomenology and the Limits of Narrative Self-Possession in Anne Carson’s Autobiography of Red Stuart J. Murray Ryerson University Philosophic Problems. “I will never know how you see red and you will never know how I see it. But this separation of consciousness is recognized only after a failure of communication, and our first movement is to believe in an undivided being between us.” Anne Carson, Autobiography of Red ’ phenomenological insight to Aparse terms etymologically,¹ we find the following Greek roots when we read into the meaning of “autobiography”: auto- (oneself) + bio- (life) + graphia (writing; from the verb graphein, to write). us, autobiography is the written story of one’s life, one’s life story. And yet, this act of “self”- writing frames “life” (bios) in such a way that the meaning of each term is obscured. “Life” interrupts the act of self-writing, exceeds it, even though the writing is about that life, and occurs within it, necessarily prior to that life’s completion. Is “life” here closer to the act of writing (graphein), closer to the sense of oneself (autos), or something else altogether escaping the autobiography that strives to contain or convey it? And will that “life” be legible?² Is it the case, as Heidegger maintains, that what is closest to us experientially is furthest from us intellectually, least susceptible to analysis ESC . Today, American culture THE is the most diverse ever on the face of this earth. Recognizing literary excel- lence demands a panoramic perspective. A narrow view strictly to the mainstream ignores all the tributaries that feed it. American literature is AMERICAN not one tradition but all traditions. From those who have been here for thousands of years to the most recent immigrants, we are all contributing to American culture. We are all being translated into a new language. BOOK Everyone should know by now that Columbus did not “discover” America. Rather, we are all still discovering America—and we must continue to do AWARDS so. The Before Columbus Foundation was founded in 1976 as a nonprofit educational and service organization dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of contemporary American multicultural literature. The goals of BCF are to provide recognition and a wider audience for the wealth of cultural and ethnic diversity that constitutes American writing. BCF has always employed the term “multicultural” not as a description of an aspect of American literature, but as a definition of all American litera- ture. BCF believes that the ingredients of America’s so-called “melting pot” are not only distinct, but integral to the unique constitution of American Culture—the whole comprises the parts. In 1978, the Board of Directors of BCF (authors, editors, and publishers representing the multicultural diversity of American Literature) decided that one of its programs should be a book award that would, for the first time, respect and honor excellence in American literature without restric- tion or bias with regard to race, sex, creed, cultural origin, size of press or ad budget, or even genre. -
