HOW DID WE GET HERE?: AN EXAMINATION OF THE COLLECTION OF CONTEMPORARY CARIBBEAN JUVENILE LITERATURE IN THE CHILDREN’S LIBRARY OF THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF TRINIDAD & TOBAGO AND TRINIDADIAN CHILDREN’S RESPONSES TO SELECTED TITLES BY SUJIN HUGGINS DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Library and Information Science in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2012 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Christine Jenkins, Chair and Director of Research Professor Violet Harris Professor Linda Smith Assistant Lecturer Louis Regis, University of the West Indies, St. Augustine ABSTRACT This study investigates the West Indian Juvenile collection of Caribbean children's literature housed at the Port of Spain Children's Library of the National Library of Trinidad and Tobago to determine its characteristics and contents, and to elicit the responses of a group of children, aged 11 to 13, to selected works from the collection. A variety of qualitative data collection techniques were employed including document analysis, direct observation, interviews with staff, and focus group discussions with student participants. Through collection analysis, ethnographic content analysis and interview analysis, patterns in the literature and the responses received were extracted in an effort to construct and offer a 'holistic' view of the state of the literature and its influence, and suggest clear implications for its future development and use with children in and out of libraries throughout the region. ii For my grandmother Earline DuFour-Herbert (1917-2007), my eternal inspiration, and my daughter, Jasmine, my constant motivation. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS To adequately thank all of the wonderful people who have made the successful completion of this dissertation possible would require another dissertation-length document.

Smith, B.A. (Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey), M.A. (Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey) SUPERVISOR: Dr. Mary O’Connor NUMBER OF PAGES: vii, 196 iii Ph.D. Thesis – M. Smith McMaster University – English & Cultural Studies ABSTRACT This dissertation draws upon literary and cultural studies, hip-hop studies, and hip-hop feminism to explore Black women’s critical engagement with the boundaries of Black womanhood in the cultural productions of street literature and hip-hop music. The term “troublesome” motivates my analysis as I argue that the works of writers Teri Woods and Sister Souljah and of rapper Lil’ Kim create narratives that alternately highlight, reproduce, and challenge racist, classist, and sexist discourse on Black womanhood. Such narratives reveal hip-hop to be a site for critical reflection on Black womanhood and offer context-specific examples of the intersectionality of hip-hop generation women’s experiences. This project also incorporates ethnographic methods to document and validate the experiential knowledge of street literature readers.

T.C. ISTANBUL AYDIN UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL SCIENCES DETACHMENT OF TERRORISM FROM RELIGION CASE STUDY OF AL-SHABAB IN KENYA M.Sc. THESIS JAMALODIN ADAM AHMED (Y1412.110008) Department of Political Science and International Relations Political Science and International Relations Program MAY 2016 I II III IV FOREWORD One of Africa’s main problem is political structure of the states, I was sure that my thesis would involve this problem and its solutions, but this idea changed on 23rd February 2015, when security officers took me for extra security checks at Jomo Kenyatta international airport. The officers said that it was because of al-Shabaab security threat, and I fit the profile of the al-Shabaab members a young Somali and a Muslim. The group’s activities has never affected me directly but for the first time I faced profiling in Kenya just because of my age, religion and tribe. After three minutes of frisking and questioning, I was allowed to proceed with my journey back to Turkey. The incident got me furious which drove me to do intense research on the al-Shabaab group which led me to making the decision to make it my thesis topic. As sensitive and complex the topic might be, the Islamic and Somali cultural background gave me the motivation needed to finish the thesis in the required time frame. The thesis’s aim was to prove al-Shabaab wrong in their claim that they are doing religious duty and in the process prove that Islam and other religions are against terrorism and I was glad that I did prove them wrong.

SOUL SABBATH SYNOPSIS Even as a child, Mieszko’s parents knew there was something not quite right about the boy, and when they saw him drawing a picture of a woman with wolf-like characteristics, they were convinced he was “unsound” and handed him over to the local Benedictine monastery, abandoning him forever. Mieszko would spend the rest of his life in that monastery until one day he simply vanished without a trace. Though he took his vows very seriously, he could no longer maintain his silence when an epiphany came to him that certain scriptures were not gospel at all – an offense that exposed him as a heretic. Mieszko’s revelation concerned the redemption of mankind, and such heresy shook the monastery to its very foundation. Though this was a crime punishable by death, Mieszko was able to bargain for his life, but it could be argued that the punishment delivered was, in fact, worse than death. The bricks were gathered, the mortar poured, and Mieszko was confined in the tiny scriptorium and assigned the task of scribing the greatest book of his time – The Codex Gigas. Even as Mieszko dropped to his knees to enter the tomb, he could not repent of the truth he had been shown, and he began the monumental chore, not to find forgiveness, but to pay homage to his convictions. Although he was writing possessed, Mieszko knew in his heart that he could never complete this impossible task alone – not in his current form. Still, he labored, and with each stroke of the quill, he became more a part of the book, until he was absorbed into the very book itself.

Sep. 2021 Animal Studies: Kafka’s Animal Stories Axel Goodbody Franz Kafka, who lived in the city of Prague as a member of the German-speaking Jewish minority, is usually thought of as a quintessentially urban author. The role played by nature and the countryside in his work is insignificant. He was also no descriptive realist: his domain is commonly referred to as the ‘inner life’, and he is chiefly remembered for his depiction of outsider situations accompanied by feelings of inadequacy and guilt, in nightmarish scenarios reflecting the alienation of the modern subject. Kafka was only known to a small circle of when he died of tuberculosis, aged 40, in 1924. However, his enigmatic tales, bafflingly grotesque but memorably disturbing because they resonate with readers’ own experiences, anxieties and dreams, their sense of marginality in family and society, and their yearning for self-identity, rapidly acquired the status of world literature after the Holocaust and the Second World War.
