Appointed as Manager of the 1996 New Zealand Thomas Cup team, was another outstanding highlight, and with the team performing beyond expectations was a highly rewarding time “Selecting national squads and teams in the High Performance arena is a very difficult task” he says. “The demands on players and coaching staff are intense, as goals and objectives must be attained. I was extremely fortunate to be in my first selectors’ panel with a very astute former New Zealand rep Val Gow from whom I learned a great amount. It is most important that players clearly understand that it is not the wins you have but the losses which identify the High Performance player. Players need to be clearly aware that one swallow does not make a summer” In addition this National duties Nigel has been Southland President for four years and convener of the coaching programme there. This year has seen the arrival in Southland of Moran Subramaniam from Malaysia, a coach of international ability, with Nigel the driving force behind his two year contract, supported by the Trust Bank Community Trust and the Invercargill Licensing Trust Travel and time away from home have meant there has been a large commitment from Nigel’s family.
