  • Rajnish Rai's Allegations of a Fake Encounter in Assam Will Not Impact
Rajnish Rai’s Allegations of a Fake Encounter in Assam Will Not Impact the Impunity of India’s Security Forces KISHALAY BHATTACHARJEE 31 May 2017 Manipur state police commandoes announce resumption of curfew after a relaxation period of four hours expired in Imphal, on 6 August 2009. The language and descriptions of Rajnish Rai’s letter are eerily similar to hundreds of such reports from Assam, Manipur and Jammu and Kashmir—three states with a significant number of encounter killings. AP PHOTO Rajnish Rai is no stranger to the consequences of investigating cases of staged encounter killings. Rai, a 1992 batch officer from the Indian Police Service, first courted controversy in 2007, during his tenure as the deputy inspector general (DIG) of the Crime Investigation Department of Gujarat. In April that year, he arrested three senior IPS officers—DG Vanzara, Rajkumar Pandiyan and MN Dinesh—for the fake encounters of a gangster, Sohrabuddin Sheikh, and his wife, Kausar Bi, in November 2005. By May 2007, Rai was taken off the investigation, so that—according to a report in The Hindu—he could be prevented from “putting the arrested senior IPS officers to more embarrassment.” He was instead posted as the DIG of the State Crime Records Bureau, a non-executive post, which was followed by a transfer to another non-executive posting as the principal, Police Training (Chowky) in Junagadh. His superiors, PC Pande, then the director general of police in Gujarat and OP Mathur, who was the CID (Crime) chief, downgraded the review of his performance in his annual confidential report for the period between 1 April 2007 and 22 August 2007 from “very good” to “average.” In April 2008, the officials of Gujarat University claimed that Rai had cheated in the LLB examinations that he had appeared for and declared him failed in all subjects.

  • A Critical Analysis of the Black President in Film and Television
“WELL, IT IS BECAUSE HE’S BLACK”: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE BLACK PRESIDENT IN FILM AND TELEVISION Phillip Lamarr Cunningham A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2011 Committee: Dr. Angela M. Nelson, Advisor Dr. Ashutosh Sohoni Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Michael Butterworth Dr. Susana Peña Dr. Maisha Wester © 2011 Phillip Lamarr Cunningham All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Ph.D., Advisor With the election of the United States’ first black president Barack Obama, scholars have begun to examine the myriad of ways Obama has been represented in popular culture. However, before Obama’s election, a black American president had already appeared in popular culture, especially in comedic and sci-fi/disaster films and television series. Thus far, scholars have tread lightly on fictional black presidents in popular culture; however, those who have tend to suggest that these presidents—and the apparent unimportance of their race in these films—are evidence of the post-racial nature of these texts. However, this dissertation argues the contrary. This study’s contention is that, though the black president appears in films and televisions series in which his presidency is presented as evidence of a post-racial America, he actually fails to transcend race. Instead, these black cinematic presidents reaffirm race’s primacy in American culture through consistent portrayals and continued involvement in comedies and disasters. In order to support these assertions, this study first constructs a critical history of the fears of a black presidency, tracing those fears from this nation’s formative years to the present.

It is a critical-historical account of the transitional era, roughly from 1998 to 2018, and examines practices and decisions taken ‘on the ground’ by film sound recordists, editors, designers and mixers. My work explores the histories and genealogies of the transition by analysing the individual, as well as collective, aesthetic concerns of film workers migrating from the celluloid to the digital age. My inquiry aimed to explore linkages between the digital turn and shifts in production practices, notably sound recording, sound design and sound mixing. The study probes the various ways in which these shifts shaped the aesthetics, styles, genre conventions, and norms of image-sound relationships in Indian cinema in comparison with similar practices from Euro-American film industries.

  • David Mcconkey Writing Your Own Obituary Might Strike You As An
Writing a meaningful obituary for someone who has passed is an important part of honoring their legacy. It remains the best way to create a permanent record of their life story for history and genealogy purposes for generations to come. However, creating an obituary in a timely manner for someone close to you can be challenging. David McConkey Writing your own obituary might strike you as an odd notion. But some self-written obits recently in the news draw attention to this practice. A new word has even been coined to describe it: “autobituary.” One such obituary was of New Jersey resident Walter Bruhl, who died in March at age 80. He wrote a complete obituary for his family to use, leaving blanks for filling in just the last details. His humorous take on his own life prompted a grandson to post the obit on the website Reddit. It went viral, providing inspiration – and laughter – to readers everywhere. Bruhl chronicled his life with wit and wisdom, even quoting Monty Python. According to his own account, as a youngster he “drifted” through the public school system, eventually “graduating, to his mother’s great relief.” During the Korean War, he joined the military “because of Hollywood propaganda.” After working at DuPont for 30 years, he was given a “fine anniversary dinner,” a “token gift,” and then summarily “downsized.” As for burial arrangements, Bruhl wrote that “cremation will take place at the family’s convenience, and his ashes will be kept in an urn until they get tired of having it around.” Another self-written obituary in the news was composed by veteran character actor James Rebhorn.
