Can Am By Ron Pace As some of you may be aware, Kohler has been the title sponsor for the annual vintage event held at Road ’s Mk2 America (AKA The KIC) in July. With Brian Redman front and center and Ford as the presenting sponsor, 2010 promises to be another memorable year. To put a bit of icing on the cake this year will be a reunion of the Mark Donohue cars. There are already not one but two of the Penske 917’s coming along with at least one of the Trans-Am Camaro cars as well as the win- ning Donohue Indy car. Spring Cleanup... it’s filthy out there

We are about half way through winter as I set the plans for the Spring Cleanup. Whether spring comes early or not, we can all use a warm place to clean the winter’s grime from our cars and that is the purpose of the Spring Cleanup. This year’s Spring Cleanup date is set for Sat- urday, May 1st. Mike Loos has invited us back to O’Reilly Motorcar’s facility. He provides an indoor location and support for washing cars and a heated shop for all the finishing and detailing you want to complete. Our activities will start at 10 AM on that Sat- urday. Mostly, bi what we are seeing are typical wear-and-tear items that you would expect from cars that have hit the silver anniversary point. Lots of timing belts, exhaust works, failing injectors, leaky oil pan gaskets, driveshaft work, et cetera. Remember, just because the car is older doesn’t mean you get to skip maintenance, especially something as critical as a timing belt. The two interesting jobs were the M cars, of course. One was an M5 that had at some point been a front-end hit victim. The folks who repaired it then decided that welding the engine’s front cover, where it was cracked from the hit, would be good enough. Well time told a different story. The weld was not complete and over time, the cracked leaked large amounts of oil, covering the entire front and right side of the engine in a gloppy mess of black gunk. The other M was an ‘88 M3 that had some coolant problems. We started with the basic pressure test, found that the hoses around the thermostat were hard as rocks and needed to be replaced. No big, slapped some on with another pressure test and out the door she went. Until the next week, a leaky radiator was to blame this time. Replaced the radiator, another pressure test and thorough inspection proved no leaks so out the door it went a second time, until. More leaks! This vehicle was a very low mileage M3 that in the end received a coolant system overhaul. Hoses, radiator, water pump, and the works! The moral to this story is rubber gets hard over time; many
