Current Research in Environmental & Applied Mycology 5(3), 213–247, Doi 10.5943/cream/5/3/6 Abstract This paper includes the results of eco-taxonomic studies of coprophilous mushrooms in Punjab, India. The information is based on the survey to dung localities of the state during the various years from 2007-2011. A total number of 172 collections have been observed, growing as saprobes on dung of various domesticated and wild herbivorous animals in pastures, open areas, zoological parks, and on dung heaps along roadsides or along village ponds, etc. High coprophilous mushrooms’ diversity has been established and a number of rare and sensitive species recorded with the present study. The observed collections belong to 95 species spread over 20 genera and 07 families of the order Agaricales. The present paper discusses the distribution of these mushrooms in Punjab among different seasons, regions, habitats, and growing habits along with their economic utility, habitat management and conservation. This is the first attempt in which various dung localities of the state has been explored systematically to ascertain the diversity, seasonal availability, distribution and ecology of coprophilous mushrooms. -

Acta Mycol. 49 (1): 47–57, 2014. The present paper provides new records of Protostropharia alcis in Poland. So far this species was known in the country only from several latest localities in the Biebrza National Park (Biebrza Basin) and the Kampinos National Park (Warsaw Basin). The new localities are situated in the Wigierski National Park (the East Sudetian Lake District) and in the north- western slope of Mt Wierzejska (the Holy Cross Mountains), where P. alcis was collected on dung of herbivores (eurasian elk and red dear) within several types of forest communities. All specimens of P. alcis were collected in recent years, from late September to early October, in the period 2012-2013. A full description and illustration of P. alcis based on gathered collections are given. Its delimitation, the knowledge of its ecology, general distribution, and threat is also briefly discussed. Based on the new and known distribution data for P. alcis in Poland, its red list category is proposed. Neste trabalho são apresentadas descrições, ilustrações, discussões e chave de identificação para as espécies do gênero Hypholoma (Fr.) P. Kumm. conhecidas no estado do Rio Grande do Sul, além de uma revisão do material de Hypholoma depositado na coleção Fungi Rickiani. A partir das coletas realizadas pelos autores, bem como estudo do material depositado nos principais herbários do estado e do país, verificou-se a ocorrência das seguintes espécies: H. aurantiacum (Cooke) Faus, H. ericaeum (Pers.: Fr.) Moser (1924-2002): a pioneer in taxonomy and ecology of Agaricales (Basidiomycota) Meinhard M. Moser was born on 13 March 1924 in Innsbruck (Tyrol, Austria) where he also attended elementary school and grammar school (1930 to 1942). Already as a youngster, he developed a keen and broad interest in natural sciences, further spurred and supported by his maternal grandfather E. Heinricher, Professor of Botany at the University of Innsbruck. His fascination for fungi is proven by his first paintings of mushrooms, which date back to 1935 when he was still an eleven-year old boy. Based upon a solid huma- nistic education, he also soon discovered his linguistic talents and in subsequent years he became fluent in several major languages (including Swedish and Russian), which in later years helped him to correspond and interact with colleagues from all over the world. In 1942, M. Moser enrolled at the University of Innsbruck and attended classes in botany, zoology, geology, physics and chemistry. In this period during World War II, his particular interest and knowledge in botany and mycology gave him the opportunity to become an authorized mushroom controller and instructor. In con- nection with this public function and to widen his experience, he was also officially requested to attend seminars in mushroom iden- tification both in Germany and Austria. -

Fr i e s, Femsjö, neotypes, topotypes Ab s t r a c t: On February 8th 1978 we commemoratedthe 100th anniversaryof the death of EI i a s F r i e s. Fr i e s was born in Femsjö on-August 15th 1794. His life shows some remarkable parallelism with that of L i n n e.One of his most important collecting areas was that around Femsjö. F r i e s has not left a fungus herbarium. Thus, based on a short analysis of the vegetation types of the area, the problem is commented on whether it is possible and useful to collect topotypes and select neotypes today in the area. Da F r i e s kein Herbarium hinterlassen hat, wird anband einer kurzen Darstellung der Vegetationstypen des Gebietes die Frage geprüft, inwieweit das Sammeln von Topotypen und die Selektion von Neotypen im Gebiet heute noch möglich und sinnvoll ist. -

MushRumors The Newsletter of the Northwest Mushroomers Association Volume 26, Issue 6 December 2015 - January 2016 2015 Fall Mushroom Season Ends on a High Note Fall 2015: After a Slow Start, Filled with Surprises By Jack Waytz It took a while for the mushrooms to get started after fully three months of unprecedented hot, dry conditions in northwest Washington, but the season ended with a healthy proliferation of species throughout our area, as evidenced by the number of species represented at the Northwest Mushroomers Association Fall Wild Mushroom Show in mid-October. Things only improved from there, as the rains came with volume and frequency, providing for a satisfying variety of mushrooms Photo by Jack Waytz both rare and common in our area. The season extended well into December, as Dick Morrison reported having fresh chanterelles for Christmas dinner! There was an interesting mix of late and early season mushrooms ocurring simultaneously. A plethora of Russulas, normally appearing at the beginning of the fall season, could be observed sharing habitat with a very robust fruiting of Cratererellus tubaeiformis, the winter, or yellowfoot, Photo by Jack Waytz chanterelle. After a paltry showing at the height of Boletus edulis var. grandedulis the season, king boletes were found in considerable number in urban settings throughout the area. Cauliflower mushrooms were being turned up into December, even past the first frost, to include one 6 pounder that was nearly completely frozen, but still in very fresh shape! This is far later than I have ever observed this mushroom. If the unusually long stretch of dry weather at the zenith if the summer had a negative effect on the mycological features of the area, and it certainly seemed to have, it was on the density of mycorrhizal species in our forests. -

Extensive field survey in different locations of Dakshin Dinajpur district of West Bengal was conducted from March, 2007 to March, 2010 and macrofungi were collected for preparation of a taxonomic profile of macrofungi of the region. From the study area 88 different types of macrofungi were collected. Among these macrofungi 74 collections were identified up to the species level and 8 collections were identified up to the genus level whereas 6 collections remain unidentified. Among all the identified macrofungal population 9% members belong to Ascomycota and 91% members belong to Basidiomycota group. In this present study, a total of 82 macrofungal species in 60 genera belonging to 30 families in 12 orders were first time recorded from this region. Among all the identified macrofungi 17 species are edible whereas 4 species are poisonous. KEYWORDS: Edible, diversity, fungi, mushroom, poisonous. This body of work was welcomed by the mycological and botanical communities of his time: Fungi students and associates aided Fries and after his passing carried forward his taxonomic ideas. His legacy Systema mycologicum spawned a line of Swedish and Danish mycologists intent on perpetuating the Fries tradition: Hampus Taxonomy von Post, Lars Romell, Seth Lundell and John Axel Nannfeldt in Sweden; Emil Rostrup, Severin Petersen Uppsala and Jakob Lange in Denmark. Volumes of color paintings and several exsiccati, most notably one edited by Lundell and Nannfeldt attached fungal portraits and preserved specimens (and often photographs) to Fries names. -

Mycological Notes 16: Growth and variability of Leratiomyces erythrocephalus, the Scarlet Pouch Fungus Jerry Cooper – September 2012 The familiar scarlet pouch fungus can be quite variable in appearance and that has caught out more than one mycologist, including me. Here I describe that variability, and I also predict this fungus will eventually spread around the world on wood chips. Leratiomyces erythrocephalus is one of our most iconic fungi. It was originally named Secotium erythrocephalum from material collected by Étienne Fiacre Louis Raoul near Akaroa. Raoul was surgeon on the expedition ship L'Aube. In 3 years in New Zealand from 1837 to 1840 he collected many plant specimens, mostly from the Akaroa area (during the episode of the French claim for New Zealand). Our fungus was first described in an article authored by Raoul 1844 (Annales des sciences naturelles) where the introduction of the name was attributed to Louis Tulasne. In the same article Tulasne describes the equally iconic Illeodictyon cibarium, also from Akaroa. Raoul/Tulasne describe Secotium erythrocephalum as scarlet capped, with a white stem and 2-spored. Both species were again covered in Raoul's 'Choix De Plantes De La Nouvelle-Zelande' in 1846. Raoul's original description of the fungus is the classical concept of a stalked, secotioid scarlet-capped fungus. Louis Tulasne, along with his brother Charles, described the genus in more detail in 1845 (Annales des sciences naturelles) and in this article he first depicts the nearly gastroid form of the primordial fruitbody. Tulasnes' depiction of the primordial Secotium erythrocephalum. In 1891 Lloyd described what we now consider to be the same taxon, sent to him by H.W Laing from Lyttleton under the name Secotium lutescens, which as the name suggests was described as pale yellow, and without the stipe extending.
