YourYo ur COMMUNITYHEALTH COMMUNITYHEALTHCONNECTION CONNECTION Volume 6 Issue 1 Summer 2012 Family Night with Community Health Connect and the Orem Owlz This year, on July 9th 2012, Community Health Connect hosted the 3rd annual provider “give-back” event to thank our providers and suppliers for the services they have given throughout the year. We had around 450 people attend the event. Included in the 450 were doc- tors and their families, as well as the doctor’s staff and their families. It was wonderful to be able to thank our providers and their staff in person and to spend a fun Inside this issue: evening together. We had a variety of carnival games, a 2011 Annual Report balloon artist and face painting for the younger crowd, delicious food for everyone, and snow cones followed Orem Owlz Provider by a great baseball game to top it off. Dr. Karl Weenig 3 Page 2 Volume 6 Issue 1 Orem Owlz Provider Spotlights Community Health Connect has many dental and medical providers who donate free services to our patients in need. We appreciate all of the services donated through our volunteer provider network and this year we decided to spotlight a handful of specific provid- ers during the baseball game for outstanding service to their community. Dr. Jason Allan threw the game’s first pitch for Community Health Connect as a repre- sentative of College Dental. An instructor at the Utah College of Dental Hygiene as well as a practicing dentist at College Dental, Dr. Allan and his colleagues have been actively involved in treating low-income patients needing dental care for the past two and a half years through Community Health Connect. In that time they have donated 400 appoint- ments and helped nearly 100 patients who needed dental care. College Dental and the Utah College of Dental Hygiene are key partners in delivering care to some of our com- munity’s most vulnerable populations and willingly donate time and resources to help meet the need for low-cost dental care in our community. We want to commend Dr. Allan and the team at College Dental for stepping up to the plate and pitching in to help address the needs of the uninsured in our community. Dr. Duane Nelson is an ophthalmologist at Utah Valley Eye Center. He has been a long-time volunteer with Community Health Connect, donating regularly for the last seven years. In that time he has helped many patients improve and maintain their vision donating consults and surgical services to low-income, uninsured patients with ophthalmology needs. Recently he helped a patient who was suffering from a cataract in her left eye that prevented her being able to see properly. The woman had lost the ability to drive and her day to day life was significantly altered because of the loss of vision. Dr. Nelson and his staff generously donated the needed surgery and the patient is now doing well and back to normal activity. Vision plays an important role our everyday lives and Dr. Nelson helps makes good vision a reality for many people in our community that otherwise would suffer. Thank you, Dr. Nelson, for your contribution to a great cause. Dr. Jennifer Tittensor is a general surgeon who works with a wonderful team of surgeons and ancillary providers at Utah County Surgical Associates in American Fork. She performs a wide variety of surgeries ranging from hernia repair to gallbladder removal. She has volunteered regularly with Community Health Connect for over five years and has helped over forty patients through our program alone. One patient re- called Dr. Tittensor as the kindest doctor she had ever known. With her skills as a surgeon she has saved people from pain, heartache and literally saved lives. Her main interest the last few years has been helping patients who are suffering from breast can- cer. She and her husband Zach, an avid cycler have even started their own organization “Mountains for Mammograms” to help raise awareness about breast cancer and donate mammograms to women in need. We appreciate the great surgeon she is, and recog- nize the asset she is to our community. Thank you, Dr. Tittensor for your dedication and service. COMMUNITYHEALTH CONNECTION ANNUAL REPORT 2011 Dear Friends of Community Health Connect Dear Friends, Here we are with another year that has passed by. Time is a thief that takes exception with no one and thus here we are already reflecting on 2011. The year brought some challenges to Community Health Connect as well as opportunities; good times and bad. Patient numbers went up, and waiting lists to see the doctor grew. We have continued to see more people out of work and insurance, struggling for the first time with unafforda- ble medical and dental needs. We have continued to look for new revenue streams in both grants and individual donations and even tried our hand at traditional fundraising. Our longtime supporters have pulled us through some tough times and our amazing volunteer doctors and dentists have taken on even more loads to help re- lieve the growing demand for services. Financially we had a tough year, dipping into our reserves to make up for lost revenue and an uncomfortable deficit. As we dive into 2012 we’re looking at the upside of the curve and hoping to continue growing our capacity to help. We continue seeking for routes to sustainability and appreciate your support as we continue to provide services for so many in our community that are in need. With health care reform at the forefront of our national dialogue we hope to see positive changes as more peo- ple are eligible for coverage and are able to receive badly needed care. We are exploring the opportunities that the changing environment will make available and that will facilitate the support of our mission of improving ac- cess to care. We appreciate our donors, supporters, partners, and especially our providers who make this amazing service available in our community. Many thanks for all you have done in the past and all that you have committed to do in the future. We look forward to a continued partnership.
