SPRING 2017 Greater Catholic Schools Foundation Inc. www.gscs.ca/foundation

Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools Foundation supports our six new schools with

sacred space funding

In the preliminary plan- ning of the P3 schools, it was Holy Mary Holy Trinity important to the division that a space for prayer reflection and an outward sign of our faith be a prominent part of the school design. This space became known as a ‘Sacred Space’. In the new schools, these spaces are connected to a student com- mons area, so that the commons area can be used in conjunction with the sacred space for class liturgies, reflection/prayer time or other faith-based activities. We are now excited to outfit these areas. St. Kateri St. Lorenzo We have been fortunate to work with Ron Blais at Holy Cross High School and Phil Rapin at St. Joseph High School. Along with their students, they will design and construct the altars and a crucifix for the sacred spaces. This is so exciting, as it is a great way to have our greater school division community add to the legacy of the new schools. We are appreciative of the support St. Nicholas of the GSCS Foundation. St. Therese Foundation Board Chair’s Message Happy spring! This time of year is truly a time to celebrate. We have been fortunate at the Foundation to spend some time in several of our schools, witnessing our staff guide our students in their faith journey. I am sure I speak for many staff when I say that sharing our Catholic faith with children impacts our own journey. It may be a single student experiencing an ‘aha’ moment, or an entire student body singing a favorite hymn. It is a time we all feel God’s presence.

Laurie Karwacki, When one enters one of our Catholic schools, there is a definite feeling of faith, of hope, Foundation Board Chair of love. A sincere thank you and God Bless to all of the GSCS staff, for creating that faith feeling, and even better, putting that feeling into action in the many ways you do!

PAGE NINE Foundation Grant Projects Reports

DID YOU KNOW…….. Twenty schools applied for and received grants for their Rosary Clubs and forty-four School Projects received funding for a total of $69,000! All as a direct result of the Schools Win Twice Raffle!

St. Bernard School Students had the opportunity to engage in and experience a self-directed student retreat with the theme ‘Becoming a Saint’, that enhanced their spiritual development. January 18 was the anniversary of the canonization of St. Bernard so they incorporated their school patron saint into the retreat. Our priests and youth coordinator from Holy Spirit Parish as well as members of the diocesan community were invited to be presenters for some of the sessions. Students actively participated in experiences such as “stained glass” art to create banners that have sayings of St. Bernard. With the help of the Foundation grant, the school was able to purchase St. Bernard medals for every student in the school.

Father Robinson School Student retreats are an integral part of the life- long faith formation of young people and offer students an opportunity to experience the love of Christ through organized faith centered activities. Father Robinson staff and students participated in a retreat titled, “Strengthening Christ’s Works and Mercy” with Pure Witness Ministries in January. The students learned about God and how He has mercy on His people and how we His people, in turn are to show mercy to one another. The rosary grant funds assisted in enhancing the prayer room space. Upon entering the prayer room, one will immediately see external signs of our faith through images, icons, symbols, liturgical cloths and other objects of devotion and faith. This prayer space is not only more inviting, it is rich in Catholic identity and is a quiet space reserved for reflection, devotion, reading and prayer used daily by staff and students.

PAGE TEN Foundation Grant Projects Reports continued

St. Angela Staff and students were very fortunate to have had Pure Witness Ministries in their school for a school wide retreat on Ash Wednesday- March 1st. They gathered as a school in the beginning to sing and pray together. Throughout the day the activities were geared toward varying age groups- utilizing the same theme, “Every Person’s Identity in Christ”- EPIC. Every group learned about the great work of St. Pierre Giorgio Frassati - that he donated most or all of his money to people he saw as more “needy” than himself, and as a result he became accustomed to giving his train-fare to the poor and running back home or riding in third class. He began serving the needy at a very young age and often told his friends when they questioned him; “I am not helping them; they are helping me”. The retreat was a great introduction to how they, as a school community, can reach out during the Lenten season to help those less fortunate than themselves.
