Mellor, Chair This dissertation investigates the cultural imagination of Roman elites regarding poverty in their society – how it was defined, how traditional and accepted images of poverty were deployed for rhetorical effect, and in what way elite attitudes toward poverty evolved over the course of the first century and a half under the Empire. It contends that the Roman conception of poverty was as a disordered discourse involving multiple competing definitions which frequently overlapped in practice. It argues that the inherent contradictions in Roman thought about poverty were rarely addressed or acknowledged by authors during this period. The Introduction summarizes scholarly approaches toward Roman perceptions of poverty and offers a set of definitions which describe the variant images of poverty in elite texts. The first chapter addresses poverty’s role in the histories of Livy, and the ways in which his presentation of poverty diverge from his assertion that the loss of paupertas was key to the decline of the Roman state. -
DECLAMATION in ROME a Major Intellectual Force in the Time of The
CHAPTER ONE DECLAMATION IN ROME A major intellectual force in the time of the elder Seneca was declamation, a much-maligned, often baffling type of practice speech that has only recently been placed in its proper perspective. 1 Its effect on Roman education was profound and pervasive; it comprised the central core of the school curriculum until the fall of the Empire and also contributed in large measure to the educational system of the Middle Ages. The swift development from essentially a simple schoolboy exercise to a consuming pastime enjoyed and practiced during the prime of life by the leading intellectual and political figures of the early Empire (including Augustus, Pollio, Ovid, Messalla, Agrippa, and Maecenas) occurred within the lifespan of the elder Seneca. 2 Latin literature and style were never the same again, so extensively and immediately did declamation affect the literary trends of the period. Also, the habits and artifices of rhetorical logic marked Roman thought forever after ward. Not only did the elder Seneca live through this period of momentous intellectual and political change, but he also recorded in the Contro versiae and Suasoriae much of what he heard in these declamatory sessions. Nor does he just provide us with quotes-although these are themselves an invaluable record for the study of the vast changes occurring in literary style-but also, throughout, he reproduces pene trating literary criticisms of these extracts made by others, and often provides us with his own well-informed and sensible opinions. Thus the elder Seneca's life, works, and thought are inextricably tied to the world of Roman declamation, and it is to this topic we must first turn before any judicious estimate of the elder Seneca can be formed. -

Santa Fe Community College B.A. University of Florida M.A. University of Iowa M.A. University of Cincinnati April 2016 Committee Chair: Daniel Marković, Ph.D. Abstract This dissertation focuses on the curious situation of the Latin rhetor Marcus Fabius Quintilianus (b. ca. 35 CE). In the early 70s CE, Quintilian received an annual salarium of 100,000 HS from the emperor Vespasian. As a result, Quintilian is commonly cited in classical scholarship as Rome’s “first public professor of rhetoric” or “first state professor.” But while this feature of Quintilian’s biography is often repeated, it is seldom explained. Essentially, previous scholarship has offered two interpretations of Quintilian’s situation, either creating a genealogy for public higher education in the first century CE, or emphasizing imperial euergetism and liberalitas. While the latter approach is on the right track, it does not explain why a Latin rhetor in particular should have been the object of such benevolence, and nearly all scholarship on the topic emphasizes the novelty of Quintilian’s situation, but without sustained inquiry into historical precedents. This study reconsiders this problem by examining the relationship between Latin rhetorical education and Roman political power diachronically, beginning with the advent of Latin rhetors in the 90s BCE and concluding with Quintilian himself. -

Littlewood, Department Member Department of Greek and Roman Studies !iii Abstract Seneca the Elder’s Controversiae and Suasoriae (c. 39 CE) provide a window onto declamation (fictional forensic or deliberative oratory) during the reign of the Roman emperor Augustus (27 BCE–CE 14). Although widely practiced as a form of elite education and entertainment, declamation was maligned by contemporaries as detrimental to rhetorical development. Modern scholars, such as Bloomer, Gunderson and Imber, have demonstrated how declamation acted as a medium for learning and asserting elite cultural identity. Previous scholarship, however, has focused on only the speaker in declamation. In this thesis I examine the secondary voices present during declamation: other speakers and the audience. In Chapter 1, I place Seneca the Elder and his work in context and examine how the format of his work allowed for the inclusion of voices beyond the speaker’s. In Chapter 2, I examine how declamation allowed its participants to assert a claim on Roman identity and lay out Seneca’s critical model, through which he validated or denied the identity-claims of the men in his work. -

The Use of Exempla from Cicero to Pliny the Younger Abstract This dissertation expands our picture of Roman exemplarity by focusing on exempla as they are used to construct arguments. In contrast to recent studies of the practice, instead of focusing on repeatedly cited instances in a series of different texts, my argument centers on repeated patterns in which authors deploy exempla. I suggest that Roman exemplarity constructs a mode of moral and practical reasoning that conditions its users to repeat a pattern of imbuing and responding to meaning in the exempla they select for themselves. I focus on texts that present themselves as dealing directly with contemporary society: in particular forensic oratory, epistolography and satire. Cicero and Pliny the Younger provide the central anchors for my discussion. The chapters of this dissertation frame and supplement the current discussion by exploring several of the most prominent uses of exempla. The first chapter builds on Quintilian's discussion of exemplary comparison to demonstrate the malleable nature of moral arguments based in comparisons between narratives. -

PERFORMING ORATORY IN EARLY IMPERIAL ROME: COURTROOM, SCHOOLROOM, STAGE A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Erica Melanie Bexley January 2013 © 2013 Erica Melanie Bexley PERFORMING ORATORY IN EARLY IMPERIAL ROME: COURTROOM, SCHOOLROOM, STAGE Erica Melanie Bexley, Ph.D. Cornell University 2013 This dissertation analyzes Roman oratory of the early empire (c. 31 B.C.E. – c. 100 C.E.) in its dual status as a literal performance and a public expression of elite identity. Drawing on the orator/actor dichotomy employed by Roman rhetorical theory, I argue that notions of performance were as problematic for the orator’s self-definition as they were fundamental. Usually invoked as a negative example, the figure of the actor was also a crucial reference point for both the orator’s physical delivery and his professional identity. Ideas of performance even shaped his selfhood, because early imperial concepts of individual identity equated people with personae and public role play. Against this largely conceptual background, I investigate how orators responded to the specific governmental and cultural changes that occurred c. 31 B.C.E – 100 C.E. I contend that many of the developments in this era challenged the basic tenets of the orator’s self-definition. At the level of literal performance, theatre’s newfound interest in staging real acts instead of simulated ones upset advocates’ self-declared status as “performers of real life” (actores veritatis, Cic. De Or. 3.214), while the recently introduced genre of pantomime dance encroached upon the orator’s territory of ‘gestural eloquence’. -

I had occasion to travel extensively throughout Portugal and Spain. In the course of these travels, I be- came acquainted with the Galician people and their literature. Later I studied the poetry of Rosalfa de Castro. While searching for material, I discovered that Rosalla•s poetry was not well known. She is mentioned just briefly by only a few Spanish literary critics. The time during which Rosalia lived, from 1837 to 188S, is at the close of Romanticism in Spain and is prior to modernismo. During her life, Spain deteriorated and became absorbed with the problems later pointed out by the Generation of 1898. RosaliaI also had great competition in the field of poetry. Contempo- rary with her were great poets like Zorrilla, Avellaneda, Campoamor, Mcquer, and others.
