Rhetorical Gestures in British Elocutionism By RHETORICAL GESTURES IN BRITISH ELOCUTIONISM BY CORY S. In the work of Bulwer, Sheridan, Walker, Priestley, Austin and others, the gesture exceeds its caricature in histories of rhetoric: an ancillary, if “detached” mechanism for the coercion of audience. Instead, the gesture produces meaning as it promotes appeal. It recommends presence as an inventional resource, and moving-with as a means to coming to terms, drawing toward what Crowley, writing in the context of contemporary political action, calls “civil discourse.” By tracking and analyzing the rhetorical gesture through interrelated thematic locations—medicine, theatre, pulpit, and philosophical chemistry—this project not only argues for re- embodying invention, but also (like the Elocutionists themselves did) suggests that theorists of material and body rhetoric would benefit by extending their cross-disciplinary reach. Rhetorical gesture points out an alternative to “invention” (as well as rhetoric) that is by nature personal, oral and alphabetic. To illustrate, he describes courtroom scenes featuring the consequences of advocates’ lack of attunement with (or disregard of) other bodies. For example, he explains, an advocate who defends a woman thought it strategic for his peroration to produce an image of her husband in order to elicit sympathy from the court. However, the room only laughs: “the persons whose business it was to produce it,” unfamiliar with the genre, “displayed it to view whenever the advocate looked towards them and, when it was brought still more into sight at the conclusion,” when it was meant to be shown, “it destroyed the effect of all his previous eloquence by its ugliness, being a mere cast from an old man’s dead body.”1 Having emphasized that the best way to rouse feeling in judges is by rousing feeling in oneself—and that the surest way to “generate these emotions in ourselves, since emotion is not in our own power”2 is through deeply cast impression, and thus feeling—Quintilian emphasizes that this orator had the right idea. The flaw was with his execution. For meeting the laughter, he forgets the living element of his delivery, and carries on as planned. Butler (Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1963), VI.i.29. 1 2 RHETORICAL GESTURE I begin with the cast to introduce rhetorical gesture: motions of the body that are more than ornament, more than rational, and more than one’s own. Rhetorical gesture, I argue, is means not only to what Adam Kendon terms “manifest, deliberate expressiveness,” but it is also means to thinking through and reclaiming movement, formation and deformation, excess, occurrence—the event—as rhetorical opportunity.3 Although this gesture is not containable to the hand—indeed, it will course a foot, a shoulder, a torso, a posture, or even a handful of postures, side by side by side—the hand is a fitting place to begin a historiographic narrative about the relationship between gesture and rhetoric. In “The Rhetoric of the Open Hand and the Rhetoric of the Closed Fist,” Edward P.J. Corbett describes the rhetoric of the open hand as characteristic of “the kind of persuasive discourse that seeks to carry its point by reasoned, sustained, conciliatory discussion of the issues.”4 The closed fist “seeks to carry its point by non- rational, non-sequential, often non-verbal, frequently provocative means.”5 The open hand depends on the “seat of the intellect,” while the closed fist depends on the “seat of the pants.”6 My project takes a part in contemporary efforts to restore the rhetoric of the closed fist—not by way of abandoning the open hand, but by arguing that reasoned engagement is also wholly bodily. Griffin in “The Rhetorical Structure of the ‘New Left’ Movement.” 2 and what Edwin Hutchins calls “cognitive systems that transcend the boundaries of individual bodies.”7 As Crowley says, “Beliefs can be learned by means of discourse, but they can also be learned through adopting bodily positions, making gestures, and performing movements.”8 Scholars of rhetoric should not merely treat bodies as receptacles for rhetorical effect. We should instead consider our own bodies, proximities, and gut sense as ways of thinking, and of coming to terms. Although this

In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal.

The figure of the “metahuman,” the human with superpowers and purpose, embodies the transfigured nerd whose defects—intellect, swarm-behavior, abnormality, flux, and love of machines—become virtues of survival in the twenty-first century. The conflict among capitalism, fascism, and communism, which drove the Cold War and its immediate aftermath, also drove the Golden and Silver Ages of Comics. In the era of planetary emergency, these forces reconfigure themselves as different versions of world-destruction. The metahuman also signifies going “beyond” these economic and political systems into orders that preserve democracy without destroying the biosphere. Therefore, the styles of metahuman figuration represent an appeal to tradition and a technique of transformation. I call these strategies the iconic style and metamorphic style. The iconic style, more typical of DC Comics, makes the hero an icon of virtue, and metahuman powers manifest as visible signs: the “S” of Superman, the tiara and golden lasso of Wonder Woman.

Mellor, Chair This dissertation investigates the cultural imagination of Roman elites regarding poverty in their society – how it was defined, how traditional and accepted images of poverty were deployed for rhetorical effect, and in what way elite attitudes toward poverty evolved over the course of the first century and a half under the Empire. It contends that the Roman conception of poverty was as a disordered discourse involving multiple competing definitions which frequently overlapped in practice. It argues that the inherent contradictions in Roman thought about poverty were rarely addressed or acknowledged by authors during this period. The Introduction summarizes scholarly approaches toward Roman perceptions of poverty and offers a set of definitions which describe the variant images of poverty in elite texts. The first chapter addresses poverty’s role in the histories of Livy, and the ways in which his presentation of poverty diverge from his assertion that the loss of paupertas was key to the decline of the Roman state.

La retórica nació como técnica de la construcción y comunicación oral de discursos lingüísticos con la finalidad de influir en los oyentes. La relación de la retórica con la oralidad es evidente desde sus orígenes y está apoyada por las denominaciones mismas que han recibido históricamente los distintos componentes de la comunicación retórica: 'rhétor' es la palabra que designa en griego al orador, 'akroatés' es el oyente y 'lógos', relacionado con 'légo' ('decir'), es el discurso. 'Rhétor' es traducido al latín por 'orator', 'akroatés' por 'auditor' y 'lógos' por 'oratio'. Por su parte, el nombre griego de la disciplina, 'tékhne rhetoriké', es traducido al latín por 'ars oratoria'. De este modo, 'tékhne rhetoriké' y 'ars oratoria', así como los sustantivos españoles 'retórica' y 'oratoria', funcionan como expresiones equivalentes. La retórica es definida por Quintiliano como «ars bene dicendi» (Quintiliano Institutio oratoria: 2, 17, 27), como arte o técnica de hablar bien, con la consiguiente asociación a la oralidad. La relación entre retórica y oralidad se hace patente en la expresión latina y española 'oratoria'. Sin embargo, las inicialmente equivalentes expresiones 'retórica' y 'oratoria' presentan una divergencia en la medida 2 en que el término 'retórica' se ha ido especializando para la configuración teórica de la técnica del discurso lingüístico persuasivo y 'oratoria' se ha concretado en la práctica comunicativa oral propia de esa técnica, si bien se trata de una divergencia que no es absoluta, pues pueden encontrarse empleos de 'retórica' y de 'oratoria' como sinónimos.

    Shadows and the Substance of Shakespearean Drama by Janine Harper A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of English University of Toronto © Copyright by Janine Harper 2018 Shadows and the Substance of Shakespearean Drama Janine Harper Doctor of Philosophy Department of English University of Toronto 2018 Abstract England in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries was the stage for explorations of the physics of light and its representation in art. Although much critical attention has been paid to this interest in light, there has not yet been sufficient attention to the concurrent fascination with its absence as epitomized by shadows. I argue in this dissertation that the phenomenon of the shadow existed as a powerful trope for artistic and literary expression in the period; I conceive of the Renaissance shadow not, however, just as a figure of negativity or privation, but also as one of doubling and of excess in English usage. My study identifies three prominent and interconnected senses of shadows that are of special importance to Renaissance dramatists such as Shakespeare, Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher, Richard Brome, and John Webster. I investigate debates surrounding the nature of the “shades” of ghosts, familiars, and other supernatural phenomena as they are discussed by natural scientists and demonologists, and as they are staged in Hamlet, Macbeth, and The Late Lancashire Witches. The problems of imitation, subordination, and spectrality that haunt these plays also figure in staged relations of social “shadowing” that obtain between speakers and mediators in Measure for Measure and The Merchant of ii iii Venice, and between masters and servants in The Tempest and The Duchess of Malfi.
