We believe that every boy and girl enrolled in our high school should have the opportunity to participate in some extracurricular activities if he/she has the desire and willingness to devote both the time and effort ​ ​ required to successfully participate in such a program. We believe that properly conducted extracurricular activities are a very important aspect of the total educational process. With this in mind we make every effort to continuously evaluate our programs so that improvements can be made to increase the overall quality of each program. Success and winning are important in today's society, but not at the expense of sportsmanship or tactics outside of the established rules of play. The coaches/sponsors at Genoa-Kingston High School teach and motivate their students to win fairly so that they may take pride in their successes. They also place emphasis on the enrichment of extracurricular activities throughout one's lifetime. The extracurricular department takes this opportunity to welcome all student-athletes to Genoa-Kingston High School. Parents are a very important part of our programs and we welcome their interest as well as support. This booklet has been prepared in order to better explain and clarify our extracurricular program, for both students and parents, and we sincerely hope that you will contact us if there are questions or concerns. I AM A COG GK Athlete’s Creed I wear this uniform with pride. It is not a right, but a privilege to represent myself, my family, my teammates, my school and my community. I appreciate those who came before me and I am honored to have the opportunity to continue the traditions set forth while wearing the Blue and Orange. 4 PHILOSOPHY OF EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES The interscholastic extracurricular program shall be conducted with existing Board of Education policies and Illinois High School Association (I.H.S.A.) rules and regulations. We believe that interscholastic activities are an integral part of the school's total curriculum and that participation in extracurricular activities should be an important part of the total educational experience for all students who attend Genoa-Kingston High School. We believe that participation in a sound extracurricular program contributes to the development of health and happiness, physical skills, emotional maturity, social competence and moral values. We believe that a sound program teaches the students the true values of cooperation as well as the spirit of competition which is so important to our society. The student learns how to work with others for the achievement of group success. We believe that the spirit of play and the will to win are valuable to the development of a healthy mind and healthy body. We believe that extracurricular programs are a wholesome equalizer because individuals are judged for what they can achieve, not stemming from the basis of any social, ethnic or economic groups to which their families belong. The district does not discriminate on the basis of sex in the provision of educational and extra-curricular programs, activities, services, and benefits. RESPONSIBILITIES OF STUDENT PARTICIPANTS It is a privilege (not a natural right) to participate in interscholastic extracurricular programs. This privilege of participating in the Genoa-Kingston extracurricular program is extended to all boys/girls providing they are willing to assume certain responsibilities. A student’s greatest responsibility is to proudly represent his/her parents, school and community. Therefore, he/she should: ● Display a high standard of social behavior. ● Not use tobacco, alcohol or any controlled substance as this is expressly prohibited. ● Display outstanding sportsmanship. ● Display proper respect for those in authority; including teachers, coaches and officials. ● Display a real spirit of cooperation. ● Use language that is socially acceptable. Profanity or vulgar talk will not be tolerated. 5 TRAVEL TO AWAY CONTESTS / EVENTS Participants are required to ride on the scheduled bus both to and from away contests. Riding home with parents is discouraged. However, we understand that there are particular circumstances where a ​ student-athlete may need to attend another event, function or appointment at the conclusion of an away contest. A parent and/or legal guardian can request approval to transport their own student-athlete from an away contest by submitting an email or written note with the reason for the request to the Athletic Director prior to the date in question. The Athletic Director can grant permission for the request if the following is true: ● The purpose for the request is deemed as a reasonable excuse for not riding the bus. ● The parent and/or guardian relieves GK CUSD #424 from liability to transport their child. ● The request is submitted in a timely manner prior to the event. Athletes who miss the bus departing from GKHS will not be allowed to participate even if they procure a ride to the away contest. The athlete is still eligible to participate if they procure a ride from his/her own parents/legal guardians with prior approval through the Building Principal and/or Athletic Director. INTERSCHOLASTIC COMPETITION ACTIVITIES OFFERED The following are the IHSA-sanctioned team sports/activities currently offered at Genoa-Kingston High School: BOYS ACTIVITIES GIRLS ACTIVITIES Football Volleyball Basketball Basketball Baseball Softball Track & Field Track & Field Golf Golf Cross Country Cross Country Cheerleading Cheerleading Wrestling Wrestling Soccer Soccer Dance Dance Band Band Chorus Chorus Scholastic Bowl Scholastic Bowl Math Team Math Team 6 PARENTAL SUPPORT It is of considerable importance for parents to encourage the student-athlete in all phases of athletic competition. Parents should help the athlete set up procedures for following rules and controlling study habits. The policies outlined in this booklet are designed to prevent problems. With parent support and cooperation, we believe that penalty assessments can be held to a minimum. On the other hand, without parent support and cooperation, the policies will be difficult to implement. There will be a parent meeting before each extracurricular season. At least one parent/guardian is strongly encouraged to attend. This meeting will take place prior to your student’s first extra-curricular activity. Parents Code of Conduct: Prior to a student-athlete’s first extra-curricular activity of a particular school year, parents/legal guardians must electronically sign the Parents Code of Conduct stating that they will adhere to the same ​ regulations of Sportsmanship that the student-athletes are to uphold as our parents and fans are also a huge part of the culture and climate of our school. This Code of Conduct is included in the online athletic registration procedures found on the GK Athletics website at https://il.8to18.com/g-k/. ​ ​ ​ Parents/legal guardians are representing our school and our teams as well as spectators at athletic events. The school district’s administration reserves the right to remove any person from an athletic contest, both home and away, where Genoa-Kingston is participating. The school district’s administration also has the right to set forth disciplinary action for any and all spectators who display poor sportsmanship. PHYSICAL EXAMINATION Each participant is required to have passed a physical examination before he/she may practice. The physical form may be obtained from the athletic office, your primary care physician or on the GK Athletic website at https://il.8to18.com/g-k/. The physical form MUST be turned into the Athletic ​ ​ Office before a student may practice or participate. A properly signed physical examination report is valid for 13 months. Parents/guardians who have online-registered their Student-Athlete for participation in athletics at GKHS will receive automatic email reminders prior to the expiration date of a particular student’s

    Decemer 2020 Board Report Drug Testing As of November 16, 102 students had been randomly tested at OHS. 100 results were negative, two were positive (both for nicotine). Testing went on a temporary pause due to no in person learning. Social Media/Communication As of Dec. 10, we have 1,172 followers on the athletic Twitter account @OregonHawks. Last year at this time, we had a total of 1,136. Winter Sports The IHSA has put a pause on winter athletics and activities. We had started boys and girls bowling practice (which was allowed at the time) on Monday, November 16 but were forced to pause on Friday, November 20. Basketball and wrestling practices did not commence due to Covid restrictions at the scheduled start of practice in November. Basketball is “on hold”, wrestling is currently scheduled for May/June. On December 2, the IHSA released the following statement: Given Governor Pritzker’s current mitigations, the IHSA Board has no expectation of starting low risk winter sports prior to January. The Board and IHSA staff will continue to monitor the Tier 3 Resurgence Mitigation in effect currently. When there is a timeline for the state to emerge from these restrictions, the Board is prepared to restart lower risk winter sports quickly. In addition, the Board hopes to reestablish contact days in January for any winter sports that cannot begin, as well as spring and summer sports. The introduction of the contact days will be based on mitigations from the Governor and the Illinois Department of Public Health at that time.

    SCHAUMBURG HIGH SCHOOL SAXONS HAVE NEW HEAD BOYS BASKETBALL COACH Wade Heisler has been named head boys basketball coach at Schaumburg High School. Wade Heisler has been named head boys basketball coach at Schaumburg High School. Heisler, an assistant coach with the school’s boys basketball team, replaces newly appointed Athletic Director Marty Manning at the helm of the Saxons boys basketball program. “We are very excited about the energy that Wade brings to our basketball program,” said Schaumburg High School Principal Tim Little. “He is well-known and popular within our school community. Wade is quality person, student-focused, and relates with both student-athletes and parents alike. Wade’s enthusiasm and energy make him a perfect fit for this job.” Heisler has been teaching physical education at Schaumburg High School since August 2012, and has spent the past three seasons as the Saxons’ varsity assistant boys basketball coach, responsible for daily practice plans and game strategy. He also coordinated the players’ summer skill development program. In addition to basketball, Heisler has served as the school’s spring event coordinator, Student Athletic Advisory sponsor, and assistant badminton coach. He has been instrumental in helping develop a new physical education fitness curriculum featuring yoga classes. Before coming to Schaumburg High School, Heisler spent one year (August 2011 – May 2012) as the head boys basketball coach and teaching physical education at Prairie Central High School in Fairbury, Ill. Prior to that, he was the varsity girls basketball coach from 2008-2011 at Byron High School (Ill.), while teaching physical education at Morgan Elementary School in Byron, during that same time period.

    Sunday Stretch July 22, 2018 Page 1 Rules Review Time for us to start working on Rules. Here are the changes for 2018. Assisting a Player - This change clarifies that no team member may assist a player during an attempt to play the ball in order to gain and illegal advantage. Keeping the Head Coach in the Replacement Zone - It is now written that the responsibility of keeping the coach in the replacement zone no closer than six feet to the sideline when standing during a play is that of the R2. Long Whistle - When multiple courts are in use, the R2 may end a timeout or interval between sets with a long whistle in place of the timer sounding an audio signal (horn). Injury Exception - When a replay is signaled due to an injury/illness and the injured/ill player cannot continue play, the head coach may request a substitute or complete a legal libero replacement for the injured/ill player or take a team timeout(s) if the team has remaining timeouts. Unnecessary Delay - This change eliminates further delay of the set by establishing that after a team is charged with an unnecessary delay, the coach may request no further action until the next completed rally. Unnecessary Delay Signal - Raise the hand on the side of the offending team beside your head, palm facing in. Hold the appropriate card on the wrist of the raised hand (S-21). Warm-Up Between Sets - Players may now warm-up between sets on their side of the court. No balls may be hit over the net.
