The Bulldogs manhandled a powerful Corn Belt conference, which included the easy #2 ranked team in the state, Normal University, by scoring 17 points. Only the Pioneers' Jared Schuckman and Jack Franklin broke up the top 6 for Mahomet-Seymour for their dominant win. With memories of a late implosion at state last year, coach Garrison will certainly want to take care of business at Detweiller before then turning to NXN Midwest. On that note, Normal University, despite Jack Franklin ⥜nishing a little further back than usual, looks strong and is set to chase the silver trophy in Detweiller. The gap between Crystal Lake Central and Grayslake Central is miniscule, especially with outstanding performances from the Rams' top 3, particularly the Aho brothers, who pose a serious threat to ⥜nishing 1-2 at state. Both handily won their conference meets, with CLC doing so despite Cole Barkocy sacri⥜cing an individual title to help injured friend from Crystal Lake South Jack Becker. Jake Gillum and Metamora ⥜nished their surge back into the top of the rankings by dominating Dunlap at the Mid-Illini conference. Metamora started high preseason and actually dropped from our rankings earlier in the year, but appear to be set to qualify easily for state as a top 5 team in 2A. One of the more illuminating results of the weekend was Sycamore's 15 point victory over Sterling at NIB-12, which has proven to be one of the deeper conferences with 2A competition, as Sycamore, Sterling, Kaneland, LaSalle-Peru and Geneseo all ⥜nish the year ranked. Chatham-Glenwood squeaked by Spring⥜eld on a 6th runner tiebreaker despite a wider split, and are barely ahead in the rankings as well. The Central State 8 champions will be let by individual title winner Chris Durr to state, where they (along with Spring⥜eld) have outside hopes at a trophy. Now that Jeremy Wallace is once again healthy after an unfortunate tumble at Wheeling, Lakes looks strong and ⥜nished second to Grayslake Central at Northern Lake County, where they also beat some solid 3A competition. Mascoutah surges in the rankings with Mississippi Valley championship, placing 5 runners in the top 12 and beating ranked Waterloo, 31-45. Dixon also joined the ranks of conference champions, thanks to a sixth runner tiebreaker over 1A power Rockford Christian to win the Big Northern conference. Their scorers ⥜nished only 33 seconds apart from each other. This weekend was littered with close results: another including the Kishwaukee River meet, where Burlington Central was just a single point behind Richmond-Burton. They hold fast at #19 in 2A. Finally, notable is Hinsdale South's Brett Haffner back from injury, looking to bring South back into a possible top 10 spot. South ⥜nished second behind Downers Grove South, who dominated the Western Suburban Gold. Questions or inquiries? Contact boys editor Ray Lewis at [email protected].
