RESUMO: A pesquisa tem como tema a restauração arquitetônica de edifícios verticais representantes da arquitetura moderna brasileira. O objetivo é investigar se a tendência adotada no Brasil para a intervenção nessas edificações segue a praticada, com frequência, em outros países, ao afastar a prática da intervenção do campo da restauração tradicional, reforçando uma ideia de salvar apenas a sua imagem. O objeto de estudo contempla, portanto, os edifícios verticais construídos no centro do Rio de Janeiro nas décadas de 1930 a 1960 e que passaram por processos de restauração conduzidos pelos órgãos de preservação. O caminho escolhido para lidar com estas questões foi analisar os processos de intervenção dos edifícios Palácio Gustavo Capanema e A.B.I., guardados no Arquivo Noronha Santos e na Superintendência do IPHAN do Rio de Janeiro. A análise apontou diversos problemas nos processos arquivados que impediram uma conclusão estruturada sobre o objetivo preliminar, porém serviu para indicar pontos importantes relativos a intervenções no patrimônio edificado. ABSTRACT: The paper analyses the architectural restoration of vertical constructions that represent modern Brazilian architecture. The purpose is to investigate whether the trend adopted in Brazil for intervention in building restoration follows that adopted most frequently in other countries, distancing intervention from the traditional field of restoration by preserving the image rather than material aspect. The object of study is a set of buildings located in downtown Rio de Janeiro that dominated the city center from the 1930´s to the 1960´s and have undergone several restoration processes led by governmental preservation agencies. The path chosen to analyze the restoration methods used focuses on records of the architectural interventions performed on the Gustavo Capanema Palace, as well as the ABI - Brazilian Press Association headquarters. The processes are on file at the Noronha Santos Archive and the National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN) in Rio de Janeiro. Research revealed several problems that hindered conclusion of the primary objective, but identified important points regarding interventions in architectural heritage. Algumas particularidades resultantes do desenvolvimento do projeto e suas diversas modificações com a obra em curso, assim como seu processo de tombamento que inclui a quadra fronteira "necessária à preservação de sua perspectiva monumental" são imprescindíveis para a compreensão de sua proteção nesses seus mais de 70 anos e tornam-se indispensáveis para fundamentar sua preservação e identificação na cidade. Além disso, torna-se imprescindível analisar a defesa, por parte do IPHAN, para proteção do edifício e da área conforme seu tombamento, diante das diversas tentativas de negociação e das fortes pressões políticas nas últimas décadas que acabaram por interferir na proposta original de proteção do entorno imediato.     “The Nude Man’s City”: Flávio de Carvalho’s anthropophagic architecture as cultural criticism* Panu Minkkinen Abstract. Cannibalism is one of the most recognisable taboos of the West and a benchmark with which a supposedly civilised world has traditionally sought to differentiate itself from the radically “other” of the hinterlands. As such, cannibalism has made its way both into the vocabulary of the West’s pseudo-ethnographic self-reflection (e.g. Freud) and the imaginary of its literary culture (e.g. Grimm). A less-well-known strain in this narrative uses cannibalism as a critical postcolonial metaphor. In 1928, the Brazilian poet and agitator Oswald de Andrade published a short text entitled “Anthropophagic Manifesto.” The aim of the manifesto was to distance an emerging Brazilian modernism from the European ideals that the São Paulo bourgeoisie uncritically embraced, and to synthesise more avant-garde ideas with aspects from the cultures of the indigenous Amazonian peoples into a truly national cultural movement. This essay draws on various aspects of the anthropophagic movement and seeks to understand, whether (and how) it influenced Brazilian urban planning and architecture, and especially if it is detectable in the ways in which architects Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer designed and executed the legal and political institutions in Brasília, the country’s iconic federal capital. The analysis, however, identifies a colonialist inclination in Costa and Niemeyer’s ideological debt to Le Corbusier. Instead, the radical potential of anthropophagic architecture is developed with reference to the less-known São Paulo architect and polymath Flávio de Carvalho whose aesthetic politics provide parallels with contemporary radical politics, as well.

    BUILDING A NEW IDENTITY THROUGH ARCHITECTURE: The Case of Colombia And Government Buildings Constructed During The Term of The Liberal Republic (1930-1946) And The Case For Their Preservation Daniella Zamora Cano Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Science in Historic Preservation Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation Columbia University May, 2019 ABSTRACT 1930 to 1946 marks a pivotal moment in the history of Colombia, not only as a period of changing political ideol- ogies that defined how the country modernized, but also as a transitional period in the discipline of Colombian architec- ture. The Liberal Republic which began with the election of Enrique Olaya Herrera in 1930, was characterized by great- er transparency in governance and the extension of gov- ernmental services to communities that had formally been underserved. In tandem with this change was a building program that would see many new buildings constructed as outposts of the national government and its services. This building program was executed through a centralized office of construction and design. The architects of these buildings adopted a new formal, stylistic and tectonic paradigm which saw them moving away from classical and neocolonial styles of the past toward architectural forms consistent with the emerging Modern Movement. These two shifts - the one political and gov- ernmental, the other architectural - occur in parallel with one another. While it is difficult to draw direct lines of in- fluence between the politicians who operated in the halls of government and the architects called upon to design the ii structures which housed the institutional programs devised under the liberal government, these trends track along sim- ilar lines.

    Of Glass and Concrete Ref 043 Internal versus External Space Relations in Oscar Niemeyer's Architecture Frederico Holanda Universidade de Brasilia, Departamento de Teoria e Historia, Brasilia, Brazil [email protected] Keywords internal space x external space; Oscar Niemeyer Abstract Oscar Niemeyer’s buildings from the 1940’s to the 1960’s are almost unanimously praised. Some recent projects are very controversial, to say the least. Why so? Relations between internal and external space in Niemeyer’s architecture are examined, by referring to the fundamental syntactic notions of accessibility and visibility – how we can move between inside and outside and how we can see between these instances. In Niemeyer’s works, relations between these domains vary radically along the intervals of closure/openness and opacity/transparency. Attention here thus concentrates in the buildings’ skin. Towards one pole, there are radical examples of transparency and openness in which a simple “shade” – a horizontal slab totally open to the surroundings – is the project’s key element. In other instances, the architect’s preoccupation with integration with nature or with the urban setting around leads him to create a new structural type: a building cut through transversally by a transparency is found in many transformations, from Pampulha (Belo Horizonte, 1940), through his own house (Rio, 1953), to the Itamaraty Palace (Brasilia, 1962). Even when programs demand solemnity, traditionally equated with greater separation between inside and outside, the architect tempers the morphological distance by creatively re-interpreting devices historically employed to do so: surrounding pools and gardens, flyovers, a slightly elevated piano nobile reachable by delicate ramps, an entrance tunnel etc.

Based on a historical discussion of actions and legal instruments aimed at the preservation of the urban space of Brasília, the article develops within the framework of two questions: 1st) the inauguration of this city, during the government of Brazilian President Juscelino Kubitschek (1956-1961); 2nd) the indication of Brasília to the status of UNESCO World Heritage, during the 1980s. The results presented in the text were achieved through the interpretation of the pertinent historiography and the study of primary sources. In this sense, in the course of the text, we seek to answer the following questions: what were the legal mechanisms for preserving of the “Plano Piloto de Brasília” (Brasília Pilot Project), from 1960 to 1987, and in what historical context did they take place? The period of his government, which began with the Revolution of 1930 and lasted until 1945, was one of great political and institutional centralization. The goal of building a new nation different from the Old Republic led to broad reforms in various sectors, including public administration and urban planning. From 1937, urban planning in Rio de Janeiro entered a new era due to the adoption of mechanisms such as the City Planning Commission. This and other centralized institutions played an important role in the process of urban transformation, mostly concentrated in the downtown area on newly available posts from the dismantling of hills and landfill resulting from it, along with the opening of a number of new arterial routes, including Presidente Vargas Avenue. By Martha Schwendener June 17, 2021 Europe was exhausted after World War II, and Brazil was ready to pick up the slack. Dozens of artists had left Europe fleeing fascism, and Brazil’s government was ready to support ambitious cultural undertakings, reflected in museums devoted to modern art and the inauguration of the São Paulo Biennial in 1951. This enthusiasm for modern art and new technological forms like photography can be felt even in amateur clubs like Foto-Cine Clube Bandeirante (FCCB), founded in 1939 in São Paulo. A trailblazer in the avant-garde art scene but little known outside the country, the group takes center stage in the show “Fotoclubismo: Brazilian Modernist Photography, 1946-1964” at the Museum of Modern Art. This exhibition of more than 60 photographs, paintings and ephemera is the first American museum show about the FCCB, which consisted mostly of hobbyists: journalists, scientists and businessmen and women who traveled together on weekends, taking pictures and creating workshops, exhibitions and publications to promote photography as an art form. The club included several professional artists — or photographers who later became pros — in its ranks, as well as a diversity of photographs from the growing immigrant communities. It’s abundantly clear that these photographers were ambitious in their approach. Using new techniques and abstract motifs, they signaled that they were aware of developments in art not only in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, but also in Paris, Moscow and New York.
