9-di martino_0Syrimis 12/19/12 2:36 PM Page 189 Between “n ew Realism ” and “w eak thought ”: umBeRto eco ’s “n egative Realism ” and the discouRse of late PostmodeRn Impegno loRedana di maRtino Summary: the recent theory of a return of realism has sparked a lively and somewhat heated debate among contemporary italian thinkers, gen - erating a split between the supporters of the philosophy of weak thought, and those who argue for an overcoming of postmodernism and the devel - opment of a new philosophy of realism. this article explores umberto eco’s contribution to this debate, focusing both on eco’s theory of “neg - ative realism” and on his latest historiographic metafiction. i argue that while eco’s recent theory further distances the author from the philoso - phy of weak thought, it does not call, as does maurizio ferraris’s philos - ophy of new realism, for an overcoming of postmodernism. instead, fol - lowing the outward shift that is typical of late postmodern impegno , eco’s later work creates a critical idiom that more clearly uses postmodernist self-awareness as a strategy to promote self-empowerment and social emancipation . this article explores umberto eco’s contribution to the current debate on the return of realism in order to shed light on the author’s position in the dis - pute between realisti— the supporters of the so-called philosophy of new realism —such as maurizio ferraris, and debolisti —the supporters of the postmodern philosophy of weak thought—such as gianni vattimo. my goal is to show that, while eco’s recent theory of “negative realism” further dis - tances the author from the philosophy of weak thought, it does not argue, as does ferraris’s philosophy of new realism, for an overcoming of postmod - ernism. -

One orients one’s attitude toward the world either by God or by what the world is. The former gives as much security as the latter, in that one knows how one stands. G. W. F. Hegel, Miscellaneous Writings, 247 Umberto Eco masterfully navigated between this Hegelian aut aut. He knew how one can be taken in, entitled, and effortlessly drift into the apocalyptic censoring shore on one side, or manoeuvre towards integralism, academic control, and conspiracy, on the other, and how each churns currents even within itself. He sailed through these haunted straits with his nimble craft of truth — narration — and he did so with intellectual emancipation and cultural production as his goal. Narration gives the ‘gift of the present’, it gives flashes of Truth (Verità) that briefly illuminate our existence, and forge passages through those of others. Narrated moments grant a virtual sostenuto where life, and the social aspect of theory, is held in place, intractable, gifted, and where events fit together as in a great work of art, to which Charles Sanders Peirce compared the Universe.1 Even with his beloved Peirce, Eco would theoretically object to going this far. Instead, à la Foucault, he would turn and say: ‘I’m not where you are lying in wait for me, but over here, laughing at you’.2 This was Eco’s summation at the end of Foucault’s Pendulum, the laughter in The Name of the Rose, his idea of a third type of intellectual (neither apocalyptic nor integrated), his sense of humour, and his moves through multiple cultural dimensions and domains. -

Wolf / Harvard University Abstract Recent studies on musical signification have been characterized by an apparently insurmountable gap between disciplines that focus on the musical text as sound (music theory, musicology), those that focus on the hearing subject (cognitive sciences, psychology of music), and those that focus on social discourses about music (ethnomusicology, anthropology, sociology). This article argues that the most recent theoretical advances in music semiotics provide means to overcome this gap. After a brief examination of some key concepts in music semiotics, the author identifies three approaches to this problem: the semiotic-hermeneutic approach, the cognitive-embodied approach, and the social-political approach. This classification allows him to introduce a brief methodological proposal for the study of musical signification from different academic perspectives. Semiotica 2016; 211: 1–4 Obituary Cinzia Bianchi* and Annamaria Lorusso The Umberto Eco gaze DOI 10.1515/sem-2016-0092 On February 19, 2016, a person not only dear to many of us, but essential for all of us, scholars of semiotics (not only Italian), passed away. It is hard to think of contemporary semiotics without the contributions of Umberto Eco, but perhaps particularly difficult to think of semiotics without the amplitude of outlook that he has taught us, without the connections that he impelled us to make, without the disciplinary dialogue that he has always practiced and with which he made our discipline alive and rich. Born in Alessandria in the region of Piedmont in 1932, Eco spent his formative years in Turin, where, in 1954, he graduated in medieval philosophy and literature. His first published book was The Aesthetics of Thomas Aquinas (1956), an examination of the principal aesthetic ideas of medieval Latin culture. After that, Eco lectured at his alma mater and during the same period worked in Milan at Italy’s state broadcaster, RAI, as a cultural editor. In Milan, where had lived for all his life, he met a group of avant-garde writers, musicians, and painters, and developed a passion for the late James Joyce, the atonal music of Karlheinz Stockhausen, and the symbolist poetry of Stéphane Mallarmé. In Milan, he worked in publishing as well, as non- fiction editor for the publishing house Bompiani. He has maintained his passion for publishing until his death, having collaborated to found, very recently, a new Italian publishing house: La Nave di Teseo. -

One thing this author does well is demonstrate that semiotics need not be divorced from other fields but that it can provide an important link between how we think and the external world that we have to deal with. Their difference, their next step "down" is the hypoicon, which names the immediate first object, without representation but only the sensory form itself, which leaves us in limbo. Before he became a best It would have been interesting to see a conjunction between the two of them. Language lets us model, but it only lets us model generics. This book is an erudite, detailed inquiry into the philosophy of mind. Did not finish. The Concept of Self-Reflexive Intertextuality in the Works of Umberto Eco by Annarita Primier A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Comparative Literature University of Toronto © Copyright by Annarita Primier 2013 ii The Concept of Self-Reflexive Intertextuality in the Works of Umberto Eco Annarita Primier Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Comparative Literature University of Toronto 2013 Abstract Umberto Eco’s novels are complex texts that work, that can be read and thus interpreted on several levels, including but not limited to the literary, semiotic, linguistic, philosophic, and historical. Notwithstanding the postmodern ideology of the irrelevance of the author (in terms of identity and intentionality) to a text’s interpretation, Eco’s novels offer another level of reading and interpreting that includes the author’s own personal reading experiences. In this way, the author arguably becomes an integral part of the text and is directly involved in the interpretive process. This dissertation is a reconsideration of the figure of the postmodern author whose authority in a text’s interpretation has been challenged by theories of structuralism, post-structuralism, and intertextuality. It undertakes this rethinking by considering the role of the author as reader--and thus as writer in the process of rereading and rewriting. This study also investigates the postmodern theory of intertextuality (i.e., the notion that all texts are [re]iterations of other texts) from the point of view of the author’s own reading experiences (since inevitably, consciously or unconsciously, what the author reads becomes an intertext). -

Umberto Eco: The Philosopher of Signs by Claudia Stancati Umberto Eco is best known to the general public for his novels and critical works in which he developed his theory of reception. Who realizes, however, that this aspect of his work is only one part of a general semiology organized around a philosophy of signs? Better known to the general public for his novels than for his other writings, Umberto Eco (1932-2016) was both a teacher and a scholar, a commentator and a host, a theorist and a novelist. His remarkably extensive output (including some fifty books) and his scholarly contributions cover a wide realm extending from linguistics to philosophy by way of aesthetics, media studies, and literature—including children’s fiction. As a man of erudition preoccupied with questions of transmission and reception, he placed under the sign of philosophy the vast semiotic theory that crisscrosses his oeuvre. Polymorphous, but Coherent In the early 1950s, at the University of Turin, Umberto Eco defended a dissertation on the aesthetics of Thomas Aquinas. He worked first for television as an assistant, then for the Bompiani publishing house, which he ran until 1975, and to which he remained loyal, publishing all his books with them down to the last months of his life. The transformation and concentration of the publishing world led him to found, with various friends, a new company, La nave di Teseo, which published his final book, Papè Satan Aleppe. Cronache di una società liquida, several days after his death. In 1961, Eco became a professor of aesthetics at the University of Bologna.
