Kelly Ruddick 23:23 and Stuart Kollmorgen 22:13 won their respective races and there were a whole swag of walkers over the 80% Age Graded Performance mark. The best were Heather Carr with 92.66% (26:59 for W60) and Bob Gardiner 90.31% (29:36 for M75). It was great to see Tony Johnson back in walking mode and doing it in fine style to win the M70 with 30:41. We also welcomed Croatian walker Sasha Radotic, currently in Australia for next weekend's Coburg 24 Hour Run – he took third in the M40 division with 27:15. VMA 5000M CHAMPIONSHIPS – WOMEN W35 1 Ruddick, Kelly 37 23:23 86.19% W45 1 Shaw, Robyn 49 29:58 73.80% W50 1 Elms, Donna 50 32:02 69.65% W55 1 Thompson, Alison 58 29:25 82.14% W60 1 Carr, Heather 61 26:59 92.66% W60 2 Feldman, Liz 62 31:17 80.88% W60 3 Johnson, Celia 63 33:59 75.37% W65 1 Steed, Gwen 68 33:31 81.67% W70 1 Beaumont, Margaret 73 42:05 68.76% W75 1 Browning, Betty 79 45:06 67.67% W75

Competing in the Little Athletics Victoria U15 1500m walk championship at the Casey Fields athletics track in Berwick (Melbourne) last weekend, she won in a huge time of 6:29.19, setting a new championship record and doing a 26 sec PB! Jemma showed her potential with a win in the 2015 LBG Carnival U14 2km walk last June (9:23) but it is this summer that she has really kicked down. She won the Victorian U16 3000m championship in 14:35 in February and then improved to 14:13 in taking third in the Australian U16 3000m in Perth in March (she also took bronze in the U18 5000m walk with 15:29 at these same Australian Championships). Cousins of international walkers Jared and Rachel Tallent, Jemma and her younger sister Alanna are the latest in a long line of talented walkers to come from the Victorian country city of Ballarat.

MALE WALKERS SUPPORTING WOMEN’S 50K: A QUENTIN-SSENTIAL DUTY By Paul F. DeMeester I know. I misspelled the word “quintessential.” On purpose. The “Quentin-ssential” in the headline is a reference to New Zealand 50K specialist Quentin Rew, a veteran of two Olympics (27th at London 2012 in 3:55:03; 12th at Rio 2016 in 3:49:32) and five World Championships (23rd at Daegu 2011 in 4:08:46; 16th at Moscow 2013 in 3:50:27; 10th at Beijing 2015 in 3:48:48; 11th in London 2017 in 3:46:29; and 11th at Doha 2019 in 4:15:54). Rew has already qualified for Tokyo 2020, having bested the time limit of 3:50:00 by 12 seconds at the Japanese National Championship last year in Wajima.

She did understandably slow from there on but her finishing time of 47:00 was a 2:22 PB. It is a shame that she is too young for this year's World Junior Champs but she is eligible to contest the World Cup and, like Jesse, is an automatic selection as winner of the trial. • 19 year old Jesse also strode straight to the lead in the Junior Men's race and was on target for a sub-41 at the 6km mark before fading slightly in the warming morning conditions.

  • Embassy of France Introduces Eco-Friendly Transportation Alternative Engagements
A free monthly review of French news & trends VOL. 11.03 APRIL 30, 2011 France Responds to Japan Crisis The French government has coordinated a joint response between government agencies and private sector organizations to deliver humanitarian and technical aid to Japan in the wake of the recent earthquake and tsunami. Sécurité Civile (Emergency Preparedness Agency) teams and the Ministy of Foreign and European Affairs mobilized in the immediate aftermath of the natu- ral disasters by sending relief units that arrived on March 13. A second envoi on March 25 included medicine, food, blankets, and water, which was distributed by the Sécurité Civile in Sendai, the most affected city. France’s shipment of 40 tons of radiation protection equipment on April 10, jointly supplied by the Ministry of Defense, the Atomic Energy Commission, and French energy corporation AREVA, reinforced the 150 tons of materials sent on March 25. The French ambassador to Japan visited Sendai on March 26 to demonstrate France's unity with affected populations and to personally assure the imminent arrival of additional humanitarian aid. France, which depends on nuclear energy for nearly 80 percent of its power, has made nuclear safety a priority in its support of Japan. Along with AREVA, French energy corporation Electricité de France and the French government-funded technological research organization Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives have provided radioprotective and radia- © DVIDSHUB tion measurement devices, as well as an atmospheric control trailer and generators. Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) Members of the Sécurité gave AREVA the responsibility of decontaminating 70,000 tons of highly radioactive water around the site of the crippled Civil assist a Japanese Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactor.

My walker of the week once again is Dane Bird-Smith. I reported in last week's newsletter that he had come third on day 1 and won on day 2 in the prestigious Around Lake Taihu rally in China. Well, he continued on from there with a win on day 3 and 13 th on day 4 (after suffering a 1 minute Pit Stop violation mid race). His overall 4 day tally gained him second place overall, only 34 seconds behind 2012 Olympic 20km champion Ding Chen of China, 3:18:41 to 3:18:07. Dane is now racing in rarefied company indeed! You can read more about the final two days of racing later in the newsletter. WHAT'S COMING UP • AV Shield continues next Saturday with round 3 of competition (3000m and 5000m walks) at all 7 venues around Victoria. 5000m walks have been scheduled for rounds 3 and 7 and will be contested by Division 1, Division 2, Under 20 and U18 men and women. All other divisions will contest 3000m. Check the AV website to see where you are competing.

For Jared, it was another fantastic top-eight finish and it was in the lesser of his two Olympic events. With the Olympic 50km event this week, Jared upped the ante even further, taking his second successive Olympic 50km silver medal and recording a 2+ minute PB time of 3:36:53, also breaking the Olympic record into the bargain. What a performance! Walker of the Week! 50KM MEN'S RACEWALK, OLYMPIC GAMES, THE MALL, LONDON, SATURDAY 11 AUGUST 2012 The men's Olympic 50km walk started at 9AM at the Mall in London and I was one of the many spectators who lined the 2km loop to cheer on the contestants. My report on the Men's 50km Race Walk is taken from that of Dave Martin for the IAAF (see http://www.iaaf.org/Mini/OLY12/News/NewsDetail.aspx?id=67421) Sergey Kirdyapkin, the man to be beaten having won the IAAF World Race Walking Cup in Saransk in May, shattered the existing record of 3:37:09 with a decisive victory.
