Company Overview Company Overview October 2016 Introduction Contura Energy: Who We Are About Us Contura Energy is a private, Tennessee-based company with affiliate mining operations across multiple major coal basins in Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and Wyoming. With customers across the globe, high-quality reserves, and significant port capacity, Contura Energy reliably supplies both metallurgical coal to the steel industry and thermal coal to generate power. • Formed in July 2016 through the purchase of certain core coal assets by a consortium of lenders as a part of Alpha Natural Resources’ Chapter 11 Bankruptcy restructuring. • Began operation as Contura Energy, Inc. on July 26, 2016. • Comprised of a diversified production profile, including a range of high-quality metallurgical coal products and significant steam coal tonnage, across Central Appalachia (CAPP), Northern Appalachia (NAPP), and the Powder River Basin (PRB). • Controls approximately 1.38 billion NT of reserves. • Owns majority stake in the world-class Dominion Terminal Associates (DTA) coal export terminal located in Newport News, Virginia, with an annual capacity of 22 million tons. • Committed to the safety and health of our approximately 2,200 affiliated employees, efficient mining operations, and responsible environmental stewardship. Crutchfield has served as Contura’s chief executive officer since July 2016. He also serves on Contura’s Board of Directors. Previously, he served as chairman and chief executive officer of Alpha Natural Resources, Inc. Prior roles include various operating and executive management positions at El Paso Corporation, Coastal Coal Company, AMVEST Corporation, AEI Resources, Inc., Cyprus Australia Coal Company, Cyprus Coal Company, and Pittston Coal Company. Gary W. Banbury, Executive Vice President & Chief Administrative Officer Gary W. Banbury has served as Contura’s executive vice president and chief administrative officer since July 2016. He previously served as executive vice president and chief administrative officer of Alpha Natural Resources, Inc., a position he held from July 2013. Prior roles include executive management positions at Allied Nevada Gold Corp., RJ Human Capital Services, and Coeur d’Alene Mines Corporation. Prior roles include various operation leadership positions at Alpha, Massey Energy, and Shell Mining. Bruce Hartshorn, Executive Vice President – Sales and Marketing Bruce Hartshorn has served as Contura’s executive vice president, sales and marketing since July 2016. He previously served as senior vice president, sales and marketing for Alpha Natural Resources, Inc., a position he held from August 2015. Prior roles include various sales, management, and engineering positions at Pittston Coal Company and North American Coal Company. Mark Manno, Executive Vice President, General Counsel, Secretary, & Chief Procurement Officer Mark Manno has served as executive vice president, general counsel, secretary and chief procurement officer of Contura since July 2016. He previously served in the same role for Alpha Natural Resources, Inc., positions he held from December 2015. Prior roles include various information technology and sourcing roles at Alpha; executive leadership roles with SJ Strategic Investments; multiple roles with King Pharmaceuticals, Inc.; and as an attorney with Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz, PC. Before joining the private sector, Mr. Manno was an officer in the US Navy. 5 Safety and Stewardship Operating safely, ethically, and responsibly are more than just priorities for Contura Energy and its affiliates. They are ingrained in everything we do. • Contura affiliate operations have received numerous safety and environmental awards at the state, regional, and national levels. • We believe every employee must have a voice in the safety process and proactively involve hourly and salaried workers alike in the observation, review, and decision-making of potential safety improvements. • Our operations have partnered with manufacturers and regulators to test the latest in mine safety technologies within active mining environments. • We also partner with local communities and non-governmental organizations to ensure appropriate and sustainable post-mining reclamation practices. • We operate the Running Right Leadership Academy, a first of its kind, state-of-the-art comprehensive education and training facility for mine safety and operations located in Julian, West Virginia. • To help enforce our own safety practices, Contura also participates in the National Mining Association’s CORESafety program (www.coresafety.org). 6 Asset Overview Our Affiliated Operations Operational Footprint Contura Energy affiliates operate both underground and surface coal mining complexes across Northern Appalachia, Central Appalachia, and the Powder River Basin. Alpha operates in Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Wyoming, Utah, Illinois, Tennessee and Pennsylvania. Clients include electricity producers and steel manufacturers. Metallurgical coal is used industrially while thermal is the form of coal used to generate power. In 2014 it had 60 mines in active operation. In 2014 the company shipped a total of 84.6 million tonnes of coal, of which 17.6 million tonnes were exported. In April 2014, Alpha had a Market Capitalization of USD977.1 million, a 12 month total equity return of -39.5% and a B Credit rating at Standard & Poor's. Alpha has suffered four years of losses, has laid off 4,000 workers and closed all but 50 mines. Due to its "abnormally low" stock price ANR was delisted from the NYSE on July 16, 2015. With debts of USD three billion dating from its acquisition of Massey Energy for USD7.1 billion in 2011, the firm filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on August 3, 2015.

    ABSTRACT Title of Thesis: “LABOR HAS A LONG MEMORY”: TRANSFORMATIONS IN CAPITALISM AND LABOR ORGANIZING IN CENTRAL APPALACHIA, 1977-2019 David Heim, Master of Arts in History, 2019 Thesis Directed By: Dr. David Freund, Associate Professor, History In 1989 the UMWA went on strike against Pittston Coal. In response to declining union power and corporate anti-unionism, the UMWA embraced community members and women as participants in its striking strategy. Although sometimes reluctant to do so, the union accepted the involvement of non-miners in non-violent demonstrations and civil disobedience, and was successful because of the strategic shift. The victory against Pittston Coal in 1989 suggests that scholars cannot rule industrial unions as sites of resistance to capitalism after 1982. The union’s acceptance of community organizing in 1989 also suggests a link between the strategies and success of the Pittston Strike and more recent organizing victories in West Virginia—the West Virginia Teachers’ Strikes.     Planning for coal mine closure in the Powder River Basin New analytical model reveals which remaining mines and communities are most at risk from unplanned shutdown May 2021 | By Dan Cohn It’s said that the Stone Age didn’t end because of a lack of stone. Just so, the massive coal seams underlying the rangelands of Wyoming and Montana will outlast profitable coal mining. Five decades after the onset of major strip mining in what became the country’s most productive coal region, the Powder River Basin, coal communities find themselves in the midst of a well-known shift dubbed the “Seneca Effect:” although growth is slow and incremental, collapse is comparatively sudden.1 Since hitting peak coal output in 2010, Powder River Basin coal production has fallen by half in a decade. Against this backdrop of rapid decline, Sightline has developed an analytical model to assess which coal mines in the region are most at risk of closure. The findings reveal a stark reality: each mine in the region saw its domestic customers burn less coal in 2020 than they had averaged for the three years prior. Some of the reductions proved to be catastrophic. Of the two mines that saw the steepest declines in customers’ coal burn in 2020, one has already been permanently closed and another has announced plans to close permanently. The basin’s remaining coal mines face an array of challenging circumstances. Largely for financial reasons, utility companies and electricity markets alike now largely prioritize natural gas, wind, and solar over coal, leading to the retirement of many coal plants, an end to new coal plant construction, and a dramatic decline in coal burn.
