Huml PhD 2017 Assessing adaptive genetic variation for conservation and management of the European grayling (Thymallus thymallus) Jana Vanessa Huml A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the Manchester Metropolitan University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2017 Faculty of Science and Engineering Manchester Metropolitan University Abstract In this PhD, functional genetic variation of European grayling (Thymallus thymallus) is assessed to inform conservation and management of the species. This study is the first to characterize immune variation at the Major Histocompatibility complex (MHC) in grayling. The MHC is a marker of high ecological relevance, because of the strong association between immunity and fitness. Taking advantage of advances in sequencing technology, an analytical pipeline optimized for high-throughput, efficient and accurate genotyping of multi-gene families in non-model species is presented. Immune genetic variation is compared to neutral marker data. Results confirm the hypothesis that neutral marker variation does not predict immune genetic variation. Further, the possible effect of supplementing wild populations with hatchery-reared fish on immune genetic variation is evaluated. Significantly lower estimates of heterozygosity were found in stocked than purely native populations. Lower differentiation at immune genes than at neutral markers are indicative of the effects of balancing selection acting upon the MHC, within purely native, but not stocked populations. Furthermore species distribution modelling is used to identify environmental parameters shaping the distribution of grayling. To evaluate risks imposed by climate change, the sensitivity of grayling to climatic variables and range changes under predicted future scenarios are assessed. -

South West river basin district Flood Risk Management Plan 2015 to 2021 Habitats Regulation Assessment March 2016 Executive summary The Flood Risk Management Plan (FRMP) for the South West River Basin District (RBD) provides an overview of the range of flood risks from different sources across the 9 catchments of the RBD. The RBD catchments are defined in the River Basin Management Plan (RBMP) and based on the natural configuration of bodies of water (rivers, estuaries, lakes etc.). The FRMP provides a range of objectives and programmes of measures identified to address risks from all flood sources. These are drawn from the many risk management authority plans already in place but also include a range of further strategic developments for the FRMP ‘cycle’ period of 2015 to 2021. The total numbers of measures for the South West RBD FRMP are reported under the following types of flood management action: Types of flood management measures % of RBD measures Prevention – e.g. land use policy, relocating people at risk etc. 21 % Protection – e.g. various forms of asset or property-based protection 54% Preparedness – e.g. awareness raising, forecasting and warnings 21% Recovery and review – e.g. the ‘after care’ from flood events 1% Other – any actions not able to be categorised yet 3% The purpose of the HRA is to report on the likely effects of the FRMP on the network of sites that are internationally designated for nature conservation (European sites), and the HRA has been carried out at the level of detail of the plan. Many measures do not have any expected physical effects on the ground, and have been screened out of consideration including most of the measures under the categories of Prevention, Preparedness, Recovery and Review. -

This includes making sure communities are connected by reliable, public transport links, to ensure people can access work, health and leisure opportunities. We make sure the road network keeps moving and responds quickly and appropriately to emergency events which threaten this, such as flooding. We work closely with partners in the Rail industry and Highways England to ensure the national rail and road network is fit for purpose for Cornwall’s communities. We also look for opportunities for innovative and efficient improvements to our transport in Cornwall while maintaining links with the rest of the UK. Our service plays an essential role in delivering Cornwall Council’s business plan objectives of: Healthy Cornwall – Encouraging healthy active lifestyles through the provision of walking, cycling and public transport infrastructure is a key focus of the service. The delivery of improved infrastructure connecting key destinations alongside promotion of the health benefits of active travel look to contribute to local and national health targets, improve air quality and the quality of life for Cornwall’s residents and visitors. Appeal Decision Site visit made on 4 April 2012 by John Woolcock BNatRes(Hons) MURP DipLaw MPIA MRTPI an Inspector appointed by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Decision date: 4 July 2012 Appeal Ref: APP/D0840/A/11/2162570 Treworgans, Cubert, near Newquay, Cornwall • The appeal is made under section 78 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 against a refusal to grant planning permission. • The appeal is made by Mr Simon Allen against the decision of Cornwall Council. • The application No:NR/10/00063/WIND, dated 2 March 2010, was refused by notice dated 19 August 2011. • The development proposed is the erection of a single wind turbine, standing not more than 53.7 m to tip, ancillary infrastructure and grid connection work near Cubert, Cornwall. Decision 1. I dismiss the appeal. Preliminary matters 2. The scheme proposes a 200 kW to 350 kW turbine. 1 The make and model is not specified, but it would have a tower height of up to 37 m and a rotor diameter of up to 33.4 m, giving a maximum height of 53.7 m to blade tip. Grid connection is proposed via an underground link to an existing 11 kV electrical pole located towards the western end of the land edged blue on the application plans, which is in the control of the appellant. 3. A unilateral planning obligation, dated 24 January 2012, provides for a financial contribution to a community beneficiary for twenty years following commencement of the development that is the subject of this appeal. -

The presentation of all monitoring features into these catchment maps will assist in developing an integrated approach to catchment management and operation. The water quality monitoring maps and index were originally incorporated into the Catchment Action Plans. They provide a visual presentation of monitored sites within a catchment and enable water quality data to be accessed easily by all departments and external organisations. The maps bring together information from different sections within Water Quality. The routine river monitoring and tidal water monitoring points, the licensed waste disposal sites and the monitored effluent discharges (pic, non-plc, fish farms, COPA Variation Order [non-plc and pic]) are plotted. The type of discharge is identified such as sewage effluent, dairy factory, etc. Additionally, river impact and control sites are indicated for significant effluent discharges. If the watercourse is not sampled then the location symbol is qualified by (*). Additional details give the type of monitoring undertaken at sites (ie chemical, biological and algological) and whether they are analysed for more specialised substances as required by: a. SELLY Rollinson, G.K., Le Boutillier, N. and Selly, R. 2018. Cobalt mineralisation in Cornwall – A new discovery at Porthtowan. Geoscience in South-West England, 14, 176–187. Although cobalt mineralisation has been noted in Cornwall and Devon in the mining literature, there are limited details of its production and paragenesis; detailed mineral studies of cobalt are almost non-existent. This paper describes in detail previously unrecorded cobalt mineralisation discovered at Porthtowan, Cornwall, in the vicinity of old workings which are part of the Wheal Lushington group of mines, immediately west of the village. A small number of massive sulphide/gangue samples (taken from a larger sample suite) were chosen to be as representative as possible. Analysis was carried out using a QEMSCAN® automated mineral SEM-EDS system, which found that samples contained up to 50% cobaltite, along with chalcopyrite, bornite, galena, sphalerite, acanthite, erythrite, matildite, chlorargyite and other primary and secondary mineral species. This assemblage is typical of a sub-type of crosscourse mineralisation, with secondary species a result of significant weathering and supergene alteration, complicated by seawater infiltration due to the coastal location. While the number of samples is limited, the detail of the mineralogical assemblage is significant, as it is the first time such an assemblage has been subjected to this level of scientific scrutiny in Cornwall. 1 Camborne School of Mines, University of Exeter, Cornwall Campus, Penryn, Cornwall, TR10 9FE, UK.
