Goldstein, Professor of Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation Lexington, Kentucky 2018 Copyright © Sheryl Felecia Means 2018 ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION CREATING IDENTITY: HOW STEVE BIKO CULTURAL INSTITUTE’S BLACK CONSCIOUSNESS AND CITIZENSHIP INFLUENCES STUDENT IDENTITY FORMATION IN SALVADOR, BAHIA, BRAZIL The research presented in “Creating Identity” investigates Black identity formation within the Steve Biko Cultural Institute (Biko) in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, a pre- vestibular – or college entrance exam preparation course – for Afro-Brazilian high school and aspiring college students. The curriculum, Cidadania e Consciência Negra (Black Consciousness and Citizenship; abbreviated CCN) serves as a vital pillar to the institutional approach to Black identity. In a Eurocentric society like Brazil and a world where Black identity is largely discriminated against including in educational spaces, Biko represents a movement to combat the exclusion of Afro-descendant youth from university, improve self-esteem and perceptions of the value of Black identity, and change who graduates from Bahia state universities. Over the course of nine months, in 2015 and 2016, field data were collected in the city of Salvador, Brazil and at the Biko institute. Since the research was cross-linguistic, cross- cultural, and hosted internationally, I assumed a methodologically narrative approach. The research design incorporated a survey, interviews, observations, and document analysis. Forty-two students completed surveys, twenty-six Biko students, staff and alumni participated in interviews, and well over 400 hours of participatory field observation were completed. Policy, demographic and curricular documents were also analyzed. CCN heavily influenced participants’ identity development through student and teacher discourse. The institution is a center of critical activism in the community. Aside from being a major part of the instructional approach to preparation for the college entrance exam, CCN heavily influenced the relationships between participants and their families and friends over newly affirmed Black identities. Although Biko students and alumni became more socially alert to the racial issues in their communities, they remain at risk of being racially profiled. Additionally, understanding blackness through the eyes of participants required an understanding of class and gender structures in Brazil. One major implication of the research for the participants is: blackness is CCN is Biko. Thereby, knowledge production and interaction with universities by Biko students are heavily influenced by Biko tenets and ideologies discussing race and racism, prejudice, discrimination, women’s rights, and economic development. Con una sección competitiva paritaria con casual e idéntico número de obras dirigidas por mujeres y hombres, la presen- cia del fútbol femenino en África, historias que nos hablan del protagonismo que está adquiriendo la mujer en sus países de origen, los feminismos negros que abordemos también desde la literatura y la obra de la ilustradora marroquí Zainab Faisiki, cuyos dibujos inéditos están expuestos en Tarifa, confirman que la 16 edición del FCAT lleva nombre de mujer. Y como parece que a este festival le gusta explorar otras orillas, este año damos el salto a las Américas negras a través de dos secciones no competitivas, una dedicada a el cine afroamericano, la gran apuesta de esta edición. Esta retros- pectiva, comisariada por Keith Shiri, programador del London Film Festival, surca las primeras películas realizadas por cineastas negros, pasando por el cine en la época de la lucha de los derechos civiles, Blaxploitation, hasta nuestros días. Se trata del mayor monográfico sobre el cine afroamericano que se ha presentado en España hasta el momento. Al mismo tiempo, programamos otra retrospectiva que toma el nombre de La tercera raíz, dedicada a los cines que nos hablan de la afrodescendencia en Colombia, República Dominicana y México.

    AXL4201F - Debates in African Studies Intellectuals of the African Liberation First Semester, 2018 Tuesday 10-12pm Room 3.01 CAS Course Convenor and Lecturer: A/Prof. Harry Garuba [email protected] Lecturer: Dr June Bam-Hutchison [email protected] This course focuses on the writings of a range of Africa's liberation intellectuals, from nationalist leaders and social scientists to cultural activists, theorists and writers. The main objective of the course is, first, to highlight the main issues that have preoccupied these intellectuals and to examine their ideas in relation to the contexts in which they were produced. And the second is to conduct a close reading of their key texts in the light of contemporary theoretical approaches to questions of colonialism, postcolonialism, cultural identity and modernity. The course will cover topics such as Pan-Africanism, Negritude and race, the politics and truth value of autobiographies, nationalism and national consciousness. Key authors such as Leopold Sedar Senghor, Chinua Achebe, Ngugi Wa Thiongo, Steve Biko will be studied alongside Frantz Fanon, Amical Cabral, Julius Nyerere, Kwame Nkrumah. Course Requirements • Two Essays of about 2500 words each making 50% of the overall mark • One take-home exam essay of about 5000 words making up the other 50%. Hand in dates: Each essay is due one week after the end of the particular block of seminars. This means that essays on questions # 1, 2, and 3 are due at 4 pm, weeks 5, 12 and Consolidation /exam week respectively.
