MEYER 1 I have been retained by the Center for Constitutional Rights to provide written opinion and possible live testimony as an expert witness on behalf of Plaintiff Sexual Minorities Uganda (“Plaintiff”) in connection with the pending action entitled Sexual Minorities Uganda v. Scott Lively, U.S. District Court, District of Massachusetts, No. 3:12-cv-30051 and any related litigation. My work for this report is provided pro bono. Students' Perceptions of Lesbian and Gay Professors1
Inventing a Gay Agenda: Students’ Perceptions of Lesbian and Gay Professors1 Kristin J. Anderson2 and Melinda Kanner University of Houston–Downtown Students’ perceptions of lesbian and gay professors were examined in 2 studies (Ns = 622 and 545). An ethnically diverse sample of undergraduates read and responded to a syllabus for a proposed Psychology of Human Sexuality course. Syllabuses varied according to the political ideology, carefulness, sexual orientation, and gender of the professor. Students rated professors on dimensions such as politi- cal bias, professional competence, and warmth. Lesbian and gay professors were rated as having a political agenda, compared to heterosexual professors with the same syllabus. Student responses differed according to their homonegativity and modern homonegativity scores. The findings from these studies suggest that students may use different criteria to evaluate lesbian, gay, and heterosexual professors’ ability to approach courses objectively.jasp_757 1538..1564 Psychology has a rich history of research on prejudice against people of color in the United States, with recent work concentrating on subtle forms of racism. The work on subtle prejudice against other marginalized groups, such as lesbians and gay men, has received less scholarly attention (Whitley & Kite, 2010). Likewise, the experiences, evaluations, and perceptions of women and people of color in the academy have been subjects of research, but again, fewer studies have examined experimentally students’ perceptions and judgments of lesbian and gay professors. The academic environment in general, and the classroom in particular, are important environments to study discrimination against lesbian and gay professors. For professors, academia is a workplace in which their livelihoods and careers can be threatened with discrimination by students through course evaluations and by supervisors’ performance evaluations. -

Lively denies the allegations concerning SMUG for lack of knowledge or information sufficient to form a belief about their truth, and denies all other allegations in said paragraph. 2) In response to paragraph 2 of SMUG’s Complaint, Lively admits that SMUG purports to bring this case under the Alien Tort Statute, 28 U.S.C. § 1350, but denies that SMUG 1 Lively avers that, to the extent any of the acts, omissions or conduct alleged throughout this Complaint were actually undertaken by him, they were undertaken solely in his capacity as an officer of Abiding Truth Ministries, a bona-fide corporation, and, as such, Lively cannot be held individually liable for said acts, omissions or conduct. -

To accelerate LGBT acceptance in the U.S. South, GLAAD is telling the stories of LGBT people from across the region through our Southern Stories program. We are amplifying stories of LGBT people who are resilient in the face of inequality and Defamatory Language 11 adversity, and building a culture in which they are able not only to survive, but also to thrive. These are impactful stories with the power to change hearts and minds, but they are too often missed or ignored altogether. THE BIBLE & CRITICAL THEORY My Beloved is a Bass Line: Musical, De-colonial Interventions in Song Criticism and Sacred Erotic Discourse Heidi Epstein, University of Saskatchewan Abstract How might musical settings of the Song of Songs provide critical interventions in the politics of love? This case study builds a womanist intertextual matrix for the Song such that its amatory and horticultural language can be reinterpreted as irreducibly “de-colonial.” Reread through Chela Sandoval’s model of love, Alice Walker’s search for her foremothers’ and foresisters’ gardens, and Toni Morrison’s “commentary” on the Song (Beloved), the biblical text circulates de-colonial energies. And, given that music figures centrally in these womanists’ genealogies of love, a de-colonial reading of the Song mandates deconstruction of a subaltern musical archive within the Eurocentric discourse of sacred eroticism, a discourse that the Song sustains as an Ur-text. If the biblical female protagonist’s longing and seeking are reread as de-colonial and trickster-esque, she begets a subaltern musical family tree—audible today in the “Shulammitic” bass playing and protest singing of Meshell Ndegeocello. Key words Meshell Ndegeocello; Song of Songs; Bible and music; love; de-colonial theory; Toni Morrison; Alice Walker Introduction What meanings might be produced from the Song of Song’s amatory and horticultural language if it is read with a sense of love as irreducibly “de-colonial”? Some of these meanings shall emerge over the course of this article as I re-read the Song of Song’s imagery and its musicality in four phases through womanist intertexts by Chela Sandoval, Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, and Meshell Ndegeocello. -

The ancient churches and cathedrals of that country were and are its glory, and there was not one without a chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The largest and most magnificent of these is found in the Cathedral of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Ely. Construction of the cathedral began in 1083, and the Lady Chapel was completed in 1349. Our Lady of Sorrows The chapel is as big as a church, and was a wonder to behold with its stained glass, seemingly innumerable statues, and gloriously painted walls. It now consists only of windows with plain glass, bare walls, with every statue and bas relief either defaced or totally destroyed by the Anglican so-called reformers. The BBC is unsurpassed throughout the world for the quality of its programs on art and history. I am sure that it must be possible to obtain in the USA videocassettes of a recent series that is totally superb— A History of British Art, written and pre- sented by Andrew Graham Dixon, who also wrote and presented an equally superb series on the Renaissance, with particular emphasis on Florence.
