Pi Alpha Xi Lotus Leaflet Spring/Summer 2000 Page 3 59TH NATIONAL INTERCOLLEGIATE FLORAL CROP QUALITY EVALUATION AND DESIGN COMPETITION HELD AT TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY The Department of Horticultural Sciences at Texas A&M University hosted the 59* Annual National Intercollegiate Floral Crop Quality Evaluation and Floral Design Competition April 6-7, 2000. Students from nine universities: (California Polytechnical Institute, Kansas State, New Mexico Cal Poly State University. 1st Place Team. Virginia Walter, Coach; Laurie Bills & Pat Broering, Asst. State, Oklahoma State, Pennsylvania State, South Coaches; Steven Baldonado, Susan Hofer, Alex Van Dakota State, Texas A&M, Utah State and the Wingerden; Kate Flores, Alternate. University of Wisconsin at River Falls) participated in both the flower judging and floral design con- tests. The flower judging contest consisted of 15 classes of potted plants and 15 classes of cut flow- ers that were judged on a criteria of quality stan- dards that include cultural perfection, floriferous- ness, and freedom of disease, insect and mechan- ical injury. The Annual contest is co-sponsored by The American Floral Endowment and Pi Alpha Xi National Floriculture Honor Society. Chairman of the contest was Jim Johnson AAF, AIFD, TMF, Distinguished Lecturer in Floral Design at Texas Kansas State University - 2nd Place Team. Alan A&M University.
