Curriculum Development

Dr. (Dennis) Brown has created a course curriculum for her Horticulture 435 class that focuses on small business entrepreneurship. Key components of business planning, marketing, management, and financial resources needed for a small business to succeed are incorporated into this class. Instructional materials include handout materials, PowerPoint lecture slides, and cases for her course.

Dr. (Dennis) Brown also has adopted the marketing capstone course, HORT 445 “Strategic Analysis of Horticultural Production & Marketing” and has created synthesis by coordinating the creation of cases written by the student to identify a horticulture production and marketing problem to be solved, a situation that led to failure, or a situation that led to success based on information learned from their internship experience and previous horticulture production & marketing classes. This class has evolved to interviewing industry stakeholders and creating a presentation to discuss industry trends as it relates to their area of interest after graduation.

Team or Collaborative Efforts/Teaching

During the 2006-2007 academic year, Dr. (Dennis) Brown participated in the Teaching for Tomorrow Program. The group focused on technology in the classroom and held informal seminars to increase the awareness of teaching techniques available. This was a competitive process in which seven junior faculty were chosen from the University. Dr. (Dennis) Brown has been a guest lecturer in ASM 336 speaking on understanding niche markets. She has also been a guest lecturer for two graduate seminar courses.
