I had the same problem that longreeno had regarding no AOL sounds when I downloaded the AOL Desktop version 9.7 to my new HP Envy Windows 8.1 touch screen desktop, RE TS 27 - k150xt, just purchased January 2014. None of the familiar "You've Got Mail" nor "Welcome" sounds would happen. I solved the problem, but had to do something a little different from Longreeno. Like Longreeno I also had no problem with sound on my itunes, Netflix, and Windows desktop. Similar to Longreeno I followed the AOL suggestions such as uninstalling and reinstalling AOL software to no avail. All a waste of time. So I go to Windows (C:) / Program Files (x86) / AOL Desktop 9.7 / sounds / us. All the AOL sounds are listed and when I double click on an AOL Sound the software, "HP Connected Music" opens up and no sound happens. If I right click on these sounds which are all .wav files, and then click on "Play with Windows Media Player" the sound does happen. So the .wav files are all fine except that for some reason they're not being recognized by the AOL software. Could these AOL .wav files be blocked somehow? Is this related to HP Connected Music? I next followed Longreeno's instructions to "copying all of the AOL sounds into the C:/Windows/Media folder where the windows sounds are also located." However, this did not solve the problem for me. So next I clicked on File Explorer, Computer, then Control Panel. In the control panel I then click on Hardware and Sound. Then I click on Sound which opens up its own panel box. Then I click on Sounds. I scroll down the sounds. First there are the AOL default sounds which all worked. Then there are the AOL_US ( my screen name ) sounds, none of them worked. They didn't work because when I clicked on "Test" nothing happened. To get these sound files to work I click on one of the sound files and then click on browse. In browse I then work my way back to the sounds that are in the Program Files, the pathway to them again is (Windows (C:) / Program Files (x86) / AOL Desktop 9.7 / sounds / us ). I then click on the sound file in these program files that corresponds to the sound file that was in the Control Panel, and then click on Open. Then when I go to retest the sound file in the control panel, it now works. I click the apply button, and now the sounds work on AOL. I know in the AOL instructions it says to convert sounds to default settings, and these sounds do work in the Control Panel. I did this instruction several times but it did not work to restore the AOL Sounds. This brings me to the conclusion that the various companies that bring all the software to the retail market are not talking to each other, thereby software glitches go unfixed. I'm a computer novice to understanding hardware and software. No doubt some people may find my explanation of how to restore sound back to AOL elementary, but I suspect a whole lot of customers have similar problems. This experience makes me appreciate the beauty of Apple products like my iPhone which have a tight integration of hardware and software making the experience a whole lot less stressful. I think the reason why computer sales have stagnated is that they provide a poor user experience, and makes me have some regret over this HP computer that I bought. The tablets are far better integrated machines, less stressful to deal with. AOL Shield Browser. Optimized for older operating systems and dial-up internet connections, AOL Shield allows you to browse the internet quickly and easily. *To enhance performance, when the AOL Shield Browser is launched over a dial-up connection, the security setting that blocks dangerous and deceptive content is disabled.
