The chord changes are included to help learn the structure and chord progressions, and so the duets may be played with a rhythm section if desired. Discography of the Mainstream Label Mainstream was founded in 1964 by Bob Shad, and in its early history reissued material from Commodore Records and Time Records in addition to some new jazz material. The label released Big Brother & the Holding Company's first material in 1967, as well as The Amboy Dukes' first albums, whose guitarist, Ted Nugent, would become a successful solo artist in the 1970s. Shad died in 1985, and his daughter, Tamara Shad, licensed its back catalogue for reissues. While there, he had the opportunity to study with greats including Don Friedman, Joe Lovano and John Scofield. He has performed at venues around the world including the Blue Note Jazz Club in Milan, Blues Alley in Washington, DC, and Preservation Hall in New Orleans; he has led groups at venues in New York City including the Blue Note Jazz Club, the Iridium, the Kitano, and Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, among others. -

Dave has been studying Freddie Green guitar style since 1990 and in 1999 his article on Freddie Green was published in the Jazz Educators Journal. Currently Dave teaches guitar and jazz ensemble as well as AP Music Theory and Music Production and Sound Engineering at Libertyville High School. Dave has released three albums (with all original compositions) with the Dave Ness Trio: “Sketches,” “Layers,” and his 2018 release “Grooveness.” His website can be found at www.daveness.net Freddie Green: Birth of a Style by David Ness Background Frederick William Greene, born 1911, anchored Count Basie’s rhythm section from 1937 until his death in 1987 with few interruptions. A self-taught guitarist, Green (as he preferred to spell it) was a devoted member of the band. -

This is the Jazz Oral History Program interview for the Smithsonian Institution with Art Farmer in one of his homes, at least his New York based apartment, conducted by Anthony Brown. Mr. Farmer, if I can call you Art, would you please state your full name? Farmer: My full name is Arthur Stewart Farmer. Brown: And your date and place of birth? Farmer: The date of birth is August 21, 1928, and I was born in a town called Council Bluffs, Iowa. Brown: What is that near? Farmer: It across the Mississippi River from Omaha. It’s like a suburb of Omaha. Brown: Do you know the circumstances that brought your family there? Farmer: No idea. In fact, when my brother and I were four years old, we moved Arizona. Brown: Could you talk about Addison please? Farmer: Addison, yes well, we were twin brothers. I was born one hour in front of him, and he was larger than me, a bit. And we were very close. Soul Journey was recorded to 2" analog tape at 30 ips and mixed to 1/2" tape at 30ips by legendary engineer Joe Ferla at Avatar Studios in March of 2000. It was originally released on CD in 2003. To date the original master tapes have remained in pristine condition. With today's resurgent interest in analog sound, Weiss decided to rerelease Soul Journey as a limited edition double LP set, sparing no expense to deliver a high quality all analog audiophile product. Only 500 sets have been pressed (250 numbered).
