Dave has been studying Freddie Green guitar style since 1990 and in 1999 his article on Freddie Green was published in the Jazz Educators Journal. Currently Dave teaches guitar and jazz ensemble as well as AP Music Theory and Music Production and Sound Engineering at Libertyville High School. Dave has released three albums (with all original compositions) with the Dave Ness Trio: “Sketches,” “Layers,” and his 2018 release “Grooveness.” His website can be found at www.daveness.net Freddie Green: Birth of a Style by David Ness Background Frederick William Greene, born 1911, anchored Count Basie’s rhythm section from 1937 until his death in 1987 with few interruptions. A self-taught guitarist, Green (as he preferred to spell it) was a devoted member of the band. -

They sound empathetic, as if they've played many times before, yet there are enough sparks to signal that they're still unsure of what the other will play. Very highly recommended. McCoy later said, Bud and Richie Powell moved into my neighborhood. He also befriended saxophonist John Coltrane, then a member of trumpeter Miles Davis' band. A flow of adventurous, eclectic albums followed throughout the decade, many featuring his quartet with saxophonist Azar Lawrence, including 's Song for My Lady, 's Enlightenment, and 's Atlantis. Throughout his career, Tyner continued to push himself, arranging for his big band and releasing Grammy-winning albums with 's Blues for Coltrane: A Tribute to John Coltrane and 's The Turning Point. However, after six months with the Jazztet, he left to join Coltrane's soon-to-be classic quartet with bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones. -

McMillan This is an annotated listing of all known Lee Morgan performances and all recordings (studio, live performances, broadcasts, telecasts, and interviews). The titles of studio recordings are given in bold and preceded by the name of the session leader. Recordings that appear to be lost are prefaced with a single asterisk in parentheses: (*). Recordings that have been commercially issued have two asterisks: **. Recordings that exist on tape but have never been commercially released have two asterisks in parentheses: (**). Any video footage known to survive is prefaced with three asterisks: ***. Video footage that was recorded but appears to now be lost is prefaced with three asterisks in parentheses: (***). On numerous occasions at Slugs’ Saloon in Manhattan, recording devices were set up on the stage and recorded Morgan’s performances without objection from the trumpeter. So far, none of these recordings have come to light. The information herein is a collation of data from newspapers, periodicals, published and personal interviews, discographies, programs, pamphlets, and other chronologies of other artists. Morgan’s performances were rarely advertised in most mainstream papers, so I drew valuable information primarily from African-American newspapers and jazz periodicals, which regularly carried ads for nightclubs and concerts. Entertainment and nightlife columnists in the black press, such as “Woody” McBride, Masco Young, Roland Marsh, Jesse Walker, Art Peters, and Del Shields, provided critical information, often verifying the personnel of an engagement or whether an advertised appearance occurred or was cancelled. Newspapers that I used include the Baltimore Afro-American (BAA), Cleveland Call & Post (C&P), Chicago Defender (CD), New Jersey Afro-American (NJAA), New York Amsterdam News (NYAN), Philadelphia Tribune (PT), and Pittsburgh Courier (PC). -

The BARRELHOUSE JAZZBAND presents a special blend of elements from all phases of traditional jazz, with predominant accents from the early big band style of the twenties, the small band style around 1930 and the New Orleans Renaissance. All numbers are played in new original arrangements. The band also plays many original titles written by members of the band. Some of them became very popular, like „The Barrelhouse Showboat“ and „Take Us To The Mardi Gras“ (by Horst Schwarz). The concert will include special guest artists who appear on the recording, including the legendary Cuba-based composer/vocalist/trumpeter Bobby Carcassés; Downbeat Critics’ Poll winner, alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa; the renowned Bronx turntablist DJ Logic; pianist/composer Michele Rosewoman, and Arturo’s son drummer / composer Zack O’Farrill.
