Our featured artist this time is Alcide ‘Slow Drag’ Pavageau, New Orleans bass player and veteran of Bunk Johnson and George Lewis bands. Slow Drag’s Half- Fast Jazz Band is the only recording issued under his own name. It’s an exciting session recorded in 1965 and features a top-notch New Orleans jazz band. From the Famous Door and Progressive catalogs we have four CD releases of well-known artists in the mainstream/bebop type of jazz - Walter Norris, Chuck Wayne, Billy Hart and George Masso. All terrific performers. Previously issued as an LP on our Audiophile label we now have a CD release of Carol Sloane doing an album of Duke Ellington songs. Recorded in Japan with a superb trio - Sir Roland Hanna, George Mraz and Richie Pratt - it really showcases her vocal talents. We have combined two long out of print GHB LPs onto one CD featuring Wendell Brunious & Louis Nelson together with a great cast of supporting jazz players. Finally, on our Solo Art label, we are releasing a brand new recording of piano maestro Kris Tokarski, a young musician who is very active on the New Orleans jazz scene – it also features trio tracks with Hal Smith and Cassidy Holden. 3 ALCIDE ‘SLOW DRAG’ PAVAGEAU DRAG’S HALF FAST JAZZ BAND GHB RECORDS BCD-54 PRICE: $15.98 MEMBERS: $13.00 Bassist Alcide “Slow Drag” Pavageau anchored one of New Orleans’ best rhythm sections during the glory days of the George Lewis band. He was basically self-taught, but his playing was within the lineage of New Orleans’ pioneer bass players. They are musicians from St. Louis of long standing and we are going to talk today about their early lives and also about their experiences on the music scene in St. Louis. CORTINOVIS: First, I'll ask you a few questions, gentlemen. Did you ever play on any of the Mississippi riverboats, the J.S, The St. Paul or the President? FINNEY: I never did play on any of those name boats, any of those that you just named, Mrs. Cortinovis, but I was a member of the St. Louis Crackerjacks and we played on kind of an unknown boat that went down the river to Cincinnati and parts of Kentucky. But I just can't think of the name of the boat, because it was a small boat. Do you need the name of the boat? CORTINOVIS: No. I don't need the name of the boat. FINNEY: Mrs. Cortinovis, this is Martin McKay who is a name drummer who played with all the big bands from Count Basie to Duke Ellington.

Alien Paul Daniel Barnes, whose professional name is "Polo" Barnes/ was born November 22, 1903., in New Orleans/ Louisiana. When he was six years old, he started playing a ten cent [tin] fife. This kind of fife was popular in New Orleans. George Lewis, [Emil-e] Barnes and Sidney ^. Bechet and many others also started on the fife. In 191^B played his first professional job. He bought a sax on August 3/ and played his first job on September 3. He had a foundation from playing the fife. As a kid, he played Emile Barnes' clarinet. There were few Boehm system clarinetists then. 'PB now plays a Boehm. Around 1920 PB started playing a Boehm system clarinet, but he couldn't get the hang of it/ so he went back to the sax/ which he played until he got with big bands. He took solos on the soprano sax [and later alto sax], but not on the clarinet. He is largely self-taught. He tooT< three or four saxophone lessons from Lorenzo Tie [Jr.]. Tio was always high. PB learned clarinet from Emile Barnes. PB wanted to play like Sidney Bechet, but he couldn't get the tone. PB played tenor sax around New York/ baritone sa^( [and still occasionally alto]. [Today PB is still playing clarinet almost exclusively--RBA, June 7, 1971<] His first organized band was PB's and Lawrence Marrero's Original Diamond Orchestra. This album was “Gerry Mulligan & Astor Piazzolla”. But it was through “Song for Strayhorn” (Carnegie Hall concert CTI album) I fell in love with the music of Gerry Mulligan. My impressions were: “How great this man is to be able to compose so nicely!, to improvise so marvellously! and to give us such feelings!” Step by step my interest for the music increased I bought regularly his albums and I became crazy from the Concert Jazz Band LPs. Then I appreciated the pianoless Quartets with Bob Brookmeyer (The Pleyel Concerts, which are easily available in France) and with Chet Baker. Just married with Danielle, I spent some days of our honey moon at Antwerp (Belgium) and I had the chance to see the Gerry Mulligan Orchestra in concert. After the concert my wife said: “During some songs I had lost you, you were with the music of Gerry Mulligan!!!” During these 30 years of travel in the music of Jeru, I bought many bootleg albums. One was very important, because it gave me a new direction in my passion: the discographical part. This was the album “Gerry Mulligan – Vol. 2, Live in Stockholm, May 1957”.
