NEWSLETTER - 1 APRIL 2017 Español Fukushima stadium added to line-up for Olympic baseball, softball at Tokyo 2020 Games PYEONGCHANG, Rep. of Korea -- Fukushima's Azuma Baseball Stadium has been added as an official venue for Olympic baseball and softball events at the Tokyo 2020 Games. The International Olympic Committee approved the 30,000-seat venue at its executive board meetings today in Pyeongchang, Republic of Korea. The Fukushima proposal was put forward in a collaboration between hosts Tokyo 2020 and the world governing body of baseball and softball, WBSC. The region was devastated by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Tokyo 2020 and WBSC will work together on a plan to stage Olympic baseball and softball matches featuring Japan's National Teams in Fukushima. "WBSC congratulates Tokyo 2020 President Mori and IOC President Bach on this great step taken with Olympic baseball and softball as a vehicle to inspire hope and highlight the regeneration in Fukushima," WBSC President Riccardo Fraccari said. "It is a tremendous honour and a duty we take very seriously to be a part of something so meaningful - to serve the Olympic Movement and to use the power of sport to shape a better world. It is in this wonderful spirit that WBSC held the U-15 Baseball World Cup last year in Iwaki, Fukushima." Read more... • Organisational Structure Softball Australia Directors
Highlights We are working towards best practice in all areas of our sport. Aussie success The Aussie Spirit shone through to win a hard fought bronze medal at the Beijing Olympic Games. Along the way they provided one of the highlights of the Softball competition with their courageous 12 innings loss to Japan, the eventual gold medallists. Our national men's teams, the Aussie Steelers and Aussie Colts, cemented Australia as the number one Softball nation with dominant performances in their respective world championships. While these victories didn't occur in this reporting year, such great achievements are worthy of a mention this year. Governance reform Our new constitution was adopted in October 2008 and Softball Australia became a company limited by guarantee on 13 January 2009. Our new Board was elected on 4 April 2009. Work continues with Member States to align our policies and constitutions. Growth through our juniors Our National Junior Recruitment Program pilot was launched, supporting our push for junior development to reinvigorate involvement in our sport. Our bottom line The last 12 months has seen a significant turn-around in our financial performance. We achieved a surplus of $181,605 (against a budget of $103,299) largely due to tight cost controls and savings in key program areas. People power Our achievements over the last 12 months are largely due to the dedication and hard work of the Softball Australia staff and to the volunteers who give so much of their time and energy to support our sport. The tireless work of our umpires, coaches, scorers, administrators and many other volunteers contribute to a great Softball experience for all participants.
