Still Going Strong at 50! Fifty years ago, on Jan. 5 at 4:45 p.m., KPTS — Channel 8 began broadcasting. The very first show that went out over the airwaves was one of the first episodes ofSesame Street called "Problems Are for Solving." Many things have changed in the past 50 years, like you wouldn't be caught dead out in bell-bottom jeans, and we can only dream of filling up our cars for under $5, but one thing that has stood the test of time is the quality programming of PBS and KPTS — Channel 8. Not surprisingly, the line-up of shows featured in our very first program guide published in January 1970 are very similar to shows that are still popular today. That first guide featured kids' shows, news shows, cooking shows, antiques shows, political shows, theatrical shows — sound familiar? It should, some of our most popular shows today are Antiques Roadshow, Frontline, Great Performances, Masterpiece and Nature just to name a few. And, PBS and KPTS continue to produce quality, commercial-free children’s programs like Molly of Denali and Wild Kratts. KPTS also works hard to bring you locally-produced programs and documentaries. KPTS – Channel 8 has always taken pride in the fact that we are locally owned and we educate and enrich our community with quality arts, cultural, educational and informational programs. KPTS has withstood the test of time. In 1970, there were only a handful of television channels to choose from, and most homes only had one television set. Now, in 2020, there are hundreds of KPTS building in downtown Wichita. channels on television and many other devices competing for peoples’ attention. In this crowded environment, KPTS – Channel 8 still stands apart from other stations. From one channel in 1970, to four KPTS channels in 2020 and the ability to watch our shows on apps and many other Dale Goter, devices beyond just television. KPTS continues to adapt and change. first host of Kansas Week.
