Jeff Eames has met with one of the directors of the rowing club to try to establish Sailors and paddlers, friends and family – more of a relationship with them so that we have better discussion and your work is very much appreciated for all communication with each other. The rowing club is home to the following- You can check their schedules online:

A lot was accomplished at the club, but a few jobs remain. Rick noted a pile of rock at the top of the south ramp. These will be used for gabions to secure a walkway to the new south floating docks. The barge is yet to have new floor boards. The deck off the members’ room is nearly complete. There are still some clean up chores – finger docks etc.

Most important – the work is done, the weather is great and you can all have your boats in for the Commodore’s Sail past this year!!! Right???

Now, our photos from the work parties... Sail school boats see the light – interesting growth in the fridges ewww

2015 FYC North Channel Cruise – Come share in an adventure!

Now that the cold white stuff is gone – we can set our sights on a warmer cruise in the North Channel than the folks to the right had!

The plan is to set sail on the cruise th around July 10 and stay to the 26 if you can. Some cruisers stay longer and some head back to the office (sighhhh) sooner.

There will be meetings prior to the cruise to make plans and to help those who may be new to cruising. Enusing you havve the right equipment and permits is important and the seasoned cruisers will know all that is needed.

There are lots of beautiful anchorages to spend the nights in and several ports to go ashore and pick up supplies if needed.

The cruising season is getting closer every day and our boats are being readied for the task.

This summer North Channel Charters will have 2 MacGregor 26D’s in Little Current Ont. That’s on Manitoulin Island...... Gateway to the North Channel.

Our 26’ boats come equipped with everything that you would expect in a 26’ sailboat. So of course there is no fridge or hot running water. There is a good cooler and hand pumped water at the sink. Shower... No way. Such extravagance! That’s what the lake is for. 2015 FYC Racing Programme – Enjoy the thrill of the race!

We are making cruising an affordable reality for those sailors that can’t get their own Racing information from our past two general meetings- by S. at-large) Where have all the Darts gone? By Derek Innes

2000 – a mere decade and a half ago, FYC had a strong Dart Fleet. Where did everyone go? Where are all the Darts? In this list there is only one Dart left – Craig Napier. It is interesting to see that Nina Myers (FYC Club Historian) and Kenna Morrow both sailed a Spark.

When Marj and I were in the hobby business of importing Darts from the UK, we wrote them and suggested they do what the Hobbies were doing: Hobie 14, Hobie 16 and Hobie 18. To our surprise, they did it! They called their boats Dart 15 (Spark) Dart 18 and Dart 20 (stampede).

The Dart 18 continues to be a very strong class in Europe. The Dart 20 is no longer manufactured. And, in 2005, a new company bought the rights to the Dart 15 and the class name was changed to Sprint 15. So the catamaran I currently sail in BC has had three names – Spark, Dart 15 and Sprint 15.

Also in the year 2000, the Canadian Dart Fleet had their Nationals at Point Clark on Lake Huron with 37 Darts in attendance. There was a strong turnout of FYC Darts racing on beautiful Lake Huron.

The Dart 15/ Sprint 15 class is doing very well in the UK with nearly 90 boats racing at their 2014 Nationals at Thorpe Bay, about 35 km east of London, England and a very wide part of the River Thames.

Note – the class newsletter for the Sprint class in the UK is called Newsprint. Very Appropriate!

I am about 1 year behind you. I turn 61 in Sept and currently have my house up for sale and plan on moving onto my 40 Jeanneau and leave sometime after hurricane Sailing is a lifelong sport – just adapt! season.

I have only been sailing about 5/6 years and took it up after I got too old to do high A blog response to a 62 year old woman sailor who wonders when she should stop altitude mountain climbing and rock climbing and mountain search and rescue. I took sailing-- that up in my 40s when most people quit and I find that while it is physical, a lot of it is Life is full of people who chase that "elusive something" that they think will bring them also mental and the ability to overcome. What I find is what age and experience happiness, only to find it and realize, not only is it not what they thought it be, but brings.... the ability to look at things in a different way with the light of experience and that they missed out on so much while they were looking for it. Things will never make the knowledge that we have nothing to prove. If we wait for better weather window so us as happy as those moments in time when our hearts, or souls, or spirits, are touched by the joy of being alive. what, that is a good thing.

As we've gotten older, we switched to roller furling headsail & electric windlass. That's I went with in mast furling and made it so all the sailing can be handled from the been the only change in the hardware dept acknowledging our diminishing strength. cockpit as I will probably do mostly single handling. Someday I may put on electric We reef earlier and sail flatter - in general a bit more cautious. We sail just about as winches for the main. *often* though we plan shorter days when practical. My *brain* doesn't feel any older, just my body - and the sea is just as beautiful. Chuck and soul mates I have done so many things I have risked so much and have not found whatever it was that I was looking for - can't even remember what it was I was searching for now. I know I have missed out on a lot because of my obsessions. I keep coming back to boats and the water-it brings back happy feelings and pleasure of just being. Self Rescue - be ready for the flip side of sailing! I am starting to feel the effects of arthritis in the morning some of my fingers hurt and sometimes my ankles, standing for a long time hurts ...too bad. But, I am a champ at 1. Be sure things are tied down before sailing. sitting. I used to jump up and scramble to the fore deck and change jibs or haul away 2. Put on your PFD. Use a self inflating jacket if it is less cumbersome for you. on the anchor rode without giving it a moment’s thought, now I give it a lot of thought 3. Be sure the rudder is pinned so it will not fall off before I act. 4. Be sure the boat has enough floatation to stay above the water The only expectations we need to fill, are our own. In being true to one's self, we can - use flotation bags if there are no sealed chambers. Test sealed then be true to all. We can never live up to how others define us, only to how we chambers for leaks. define ourselves. Seek peace and contentment, but never let it stop you from putting it at risk for that which you believe in. To settle merely for contentment, is just a Seal spars with mini cell foam so that they will float- this may also comfortable way of drowning. Clichéd perhaps, but none the less true. There is no help to keep the boat from turtling greater regret, than that for what we didn't try. It's easy to put yourself at physical risk, much harder...and scary....to put your inner self at risk. Yet, in the end, win or lose, that is the only path to finding real happiness. 5. Tie gear in mesh bag on foredeck so equip is easily accessible I found that I seemed to be losing strength and stamina as I approached 50. My joints bothered me and it was getting progressively harder to push big boats in heavy going. 6. Fasten a bailer with line to the boat for bailing and/or a pump As a result, I began doing yoga, and paying more attention to my muscle tone, and 7. Carry a pocket knife to cut lines if needed my weight. That combination has made a really big difference to my ability to 8. FYC CLUB WEAR

UR fashionable FYC sailing crew and onshore pizzazz

You may still order from last year’s. The form is on the club website www.fyc.on.ca under the membership tab and downloads

Impressive looking crew, eh? How does yours measure up!

Survey of the bottom of Fanshawe Lake

This will be of interest to any of the sailors who, as did I, have firmly planted their mast top in the mud near mark 6... The UTRCA are starting a survey of the lake bed. With the rise and fall of our great lake, the shoreline tumbles, debris fills in and things become shallower. Would be interesting to know where the car that went into the lake is and how the bridge abutments are holding out! Stay tuned to see how this goes in a year or two – “it’s all about the base...”
