    Weston Noble Interviewed by Peter Myers at Hilton Hotel, December 21, 2008 Q I’ve asked everybody questions about their earlier years in music…..talk about the track you were on and how that experience may have shifted your direction. A I’m at a point in time in my life where I like to reflect on certain events that took place and the meaning of those events, which I didn’t understand fully at the time. I entered Luther as a hopeful piano major and I had started piano when I was five and so on and so on. One day our men’s chorus director asked me if I wanted to take the rehearsal the following day because he was going to be gone. Oh, yes of course I would do that because anything that had to do with the word choir did something to me and there’s a Norwegian hymn that talks about behold the host arrayed in white and the heavenly choir. Well, that became my favorite hymn. So we went up and had the rehearsal. I don’t remember what piece we sang. I know that I was very energized and excited that I could do this. Following the rehearsal I went back to my room, which was in the same building and sat down and I said to myself, you know, this is what I must do. I am going to cease striving to be a pianist. I have not felt like this in any other way or matter of contact with music.

Don Levsen, director Sioux Falls, South Dakota The Augustana Brass Choir, formed in 1965, is a major contributor to campus and community music, with a reper­ toire varying from sixteenth-century antiphonal music to twentieth-century experimental works. Harold Krueger, the director, received his B.A. degree from Luther College and his Master's degree and doctorate from the University of. Northern Colorado. Don Levsen, Choral Director at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, is a graduate of Northern State College and the University of Minnesota. He holds lay-staff accreditation with the American Lutheran Church. Jerry Hanson, Director of Music at First Lutheran Church, has a B.A. degree from St. Olaf College. He is cur­ rently on staff at Augustana College. He has been a church choral director while pursuing careers in aviation, electrical engineering, and the Air Force.

    Collegiate Chorale Jennaya Robison, conductor 2019 Minnesota Tour From the Conductor Legacy “Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.” —Søren Kierkegaard Legacy is a program that invites us to think about the gift of life and how we want to be remembered. Singers in Collegiate Chorale were asked to write a response to the question: “If you had to write one sentence that would be written about you one hundred years from now, what would it say?” You will hear some of their responses interspersed throughout the concert. The Luther College Mission Statement includes the JENNAYA ROBISON, CONDUCTOR statement that “As people of all backgrounds, we embrace Jennaya Robison is in demand as a conductor, clinician, and diversity and challenge one another to learn in community, soprano throughout the United States. Melius Christiansen was very influential in the a cappella choral tradition. He started his career in Norway and brought his expertise to the American Midwest. Christiansen established a name for himself while working at St. Olaf Lutheran College as the head of the music department. It was the blended choral sound and precision he was able to achieve and display with his new choir in 1912 that caught everyone’s ear. He continued to succeed with national and international tours, allowing him to spread his new “St. Olaf” choral sound through his music, compositions, and conducting school. This study explores the influence of F. Melius Christiansen (1871-1955) and the Minnesota choral tradition on six subsequent conductor- composers’ compositions and conducting styles, including: Olaf Christiansen (1901-1984), Paul J. Christiansen (1914-1997), Kenneth Jennings (b. 1925), Robert Scholz (b. 1940), René Clausen (b. 1953), and Kenneth Hodgson (b. 1939) using Schenkerian analysis.
