All’incirca 150 studiosi, appartenenti alla Society for the Study of Christian Spirituality (SSCS) e al Forum dei Professori di Teologia Spirituale in Italia (FPTSI) hanno riflettuto insieme, durante quattro intense giornate, sul tema Metodologie in evoluzione (Evolving methodologies). Il presente numero di Mysterion offre tutte le relazioni del Convegno: le due prime, quelle di Mary Frohlich (Catholic Theological Union-Stati Uniti1) e di Jesús Manuel García Gutiérrez (Università Pontificia Salesiana-Spagna), essendo state le due relazio- ni di apertura, hanno più spazio; nello stesso modo anche le due ultime relazioni di chiusura, quelle di Rossano Zas Friz De Col (Pontificia Università Gregoriana-Perù) e quella di Gilberto Cavazos-González (Pontificia Università Antonianum-Stati Uniti). He was also the first pope from the Americas. No sooner was Francis elected than there were accusations he had been tainted by the regime. It does seem true, in fact, going on Paul Vallely's admirably organised quickie of a biography, that as head of the Argentinian Jesuits, Francis had censured two Jesuits, Orlando Yorio and Franz Jalics, and told them they had to stop their liberation theology style work in the slums of Buenos Aires. They defied him and they were subsequently in arbitrarily arrested by military Pope Francis: Untying the Knots and tortured. Francis did not, of course, instigate this but his authoritarian opposition to these priests of the left would not have helped and may have influenced the thugs.

For those of you who are new, welcome to the Faith Angle Forum. We’ve been doing the Faith Angle Forum since 1999. This is our 24th forum. Now, ladies and gentlemen, our first speaker, Paul Vallely, the author of a wonderful new book called Pope Francis: Untying the Knots that has been raved about by every reviewer. He’s also written an important essay in the magazine The Independent. We have about 30 copies of this. It’s called “A Rebel Pope, One Year In,” and it’s over here near the coffee. Feel free to take one. Paul’s book has been called by The New Yorker as “indispensable.” It’s been called “riveting” by The Guardian, and The Sunday Times said “in terms of seriousness of purpose and depth of understanding,” it is “head and shoulders above” all the other books written about Pope Francis. Allen, Jr. The Boston Globe Paul Vallely Author, Pope Francis: Untying the Knots March 24, 2014 MICHAEL CROMARTIE: Our first speaker [is] Paul Vallely, the author of a wonderful new book called Pope Francis: Untying the Knots that has been raved about by every reviewer. PAUL VALLELY: I just want to tell you something about how I came to write the book, and I want to highlight three things about it, which I think would be useful to you, in watching the way that the papacy developed. It grew out of a paradox, essentially. When the Pope stepped out on that balcony in St. Peter’s, we were swiftly told, those that didn’t know, that he was a man who took the subway, not chauffeur-driven cars. He turned down his lavish palace in Argentina, as he’s now done in Rome, and he cooked his own food in a two-room apartment. So things that come from Buenos Aires are being reproduced in Rome. So on the balcony, an icon of simplicity and of hope, a new pope in plain white. He wanted to be blessed by the people before he would bless them. He wore a plain metal cross instead of one made of gold and jewels. And he said that the Church of Rome was one which presides in charity over all the other churches, and the scholars watching, whether they were Catholic or Orthodox or Protestant, knew immediately that this was a quote from a first century saint, Ignatius of Antioch, and decoded it signaled an intent to restore collegiality inside the Church, but also between the churches, undermining a thousand years of papal monarchy.

He stepped in at a moment when the Church was feeling very low with a dwindling self-esteem, fragile and defenseless, her moral authority challenged from within and out. He was chosen by God to guide his Church as a sacrament of God’s mercy and forgiving love and to rejuvenate the Church to be powerful witness of God’s kingdom. A brief life sketch of Pope Francis and an analysis of the events and experiences that molded and formed Pope Francis, a leader of unprecedented courage and qualities would show that this person is gifted to the Church by the Lord to renew the Church and re-awaken its mission to be the light and the salt of the earth. His self-awareness of his weaknesses and strengths, his complete trust in the providential care of the Lord and renewing power of the Spirit, his lived experience of Ignatian spiri- tuality help him to guide the Church through dialogue, discernment and de-centralization. Pope Francis has brought in revolutionary change in Church, attitudes, approach and style in relating with those within the Church as well as outside the Church. In spite of considerable resistance, such attitudinal and stylistic changes have evoked greater confidence, hope and enthusiasm in the ordinary believers and a greater acceptance of Pope’s spiritual and moral leadership by the entire world.
