The aim of this group is to attend concerts at venues in Manchester which will reflect different styles and periods of music performed by a variety of instruments and ensembles. When possible, there is a short preparation before the concert to enhance our appreciation. Venues include the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester University and Chetham’s School of Music and travel is by shared cars, tram, bus or train from Gatley. Forthcoming events are usually announced at the U3A Monthly Meeting. Cheadle and Gatley U3A Singing for Pleasure - This group meets fortnightly, 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at Gatley United Reformed Church, Elm Road, Gatley, SK 8 4LY. Contact 0161 428 4677. New singers are always welcome. It is not necessary to have previous choir experience or the ability to read music. There are no auditions!!! We sing a wide variety of music ranging from the 16th century, Gilbert and Sullivan, folk songs, numbers from well-known musicals and serious music by modern composers. From time to time we give concerts to a variety of local organisations and for these we wear a smart black uniform, with the ladies providing a splash of colour with their bright scarves. We also perform at the U3A Christmas parties. Cheadle and Gatley U3A Creative Writing - The Creative Writing group generally meets every month on a Monday, at the first floor room in the Café Unity, in Heald Green, from 2 pm to 4 pm. We each bring a piece of work on a subject that has been agreed at the previous meeting. Everyone reads out his/her work and the group discusses the piece. It is informal, and gentle constructive critiques are the norm.We write stories, reports, poetry. Anything goes. We try to make the pieces around 600 to 800 words. Come and join us. Contact 0161 428 4677. The atmosphere is informal and friendly and members have enjoyed developing their skills in a mutually supportive environment, as well as the social side of the meetings. Exercise classes for older people - Over 65? Want to get fitter, have some fun and enjoy new company? The classes aim to improve balance and co-ordinatorn, strengthen muscles and provide a fun, safe space to stay fit. We have 2 classes taking place on Fridays at Withington Methodist Church, 439 Wilmslow Road, M20 4AN. 10.30-11.30 Chair Assisted and 11.30-12.30 Chair based . Classes are £3 but you are more than welcome to come for a trial session to see if it works for you. Starting at 11.00am, the sessions are run in partnership with Lifeline and the sessions are open to men and women over the age of 50, regardless of ability. The exhibition will be called ‘Beyond Dementia’July – October 2017 6 workshops will be held to get to know the gallery and plan the project followed by 12 art workshops, assisted by resident artists. Tuesday afternoons, 2 – 4pm at the Whitworth Art Gallery. Transport can be arranged by Together Dementia Support and one of our support workers will accompany you to/from the gallery and throughout the workshops. From 12.30pm until 2.15pm. Join us for an opportunity to meet friends, make new ones, be entertained and informed and get involved. Contact 0161 833 3944 'Handmade' at the Whitworth - 05 September 2016 to 31 March 2017 The Whitworth, Oxford Road, Hulme, M15 6ER. 14:00 - 16:00.Free Craft based workshops for older people (over 50) in partnership with Age-Friendly Manchester.All materials supplied. Come and try your hand at a range of traditional arts and craft skills from woodblock carving, sculpture, printing, watercolour painting and many more. Each term we will focus on a different technique with an artist who will introduce and guide us through the processes. The sessions are tasters which can be dipped in and out of and we welcome all skill levels. The sessions are very popular and there are a limited number of places (maximum 15 per session) available. You will need to book for each session you wish to attend (you will not be able to book ahead for the whole term) with Claire Cowell, email [email protected] or phone 07776 170 688. Young at Heart Group – £2 per session including tea/coffee and biscuits. Our popular social group is organised for the more mature people, at the Lawton Moor Methodist Church, Button Lane, Wythenshawe, Manchester M23 0ND, though all are welcome. With activities each week, our meetings take place from 11.30am to 2pm on the last Saturday of every month. An outing is organised twice per year. If you would like to come along and have a look at us and see what it’s all about, just turn up! Why not invite a friend or neighbour to come along too? Dementia friendly swimming – Wythenshawe Forum, Forum Square, M22 5RX. Fridays 1-2pm. £1 per session or Free for people over 60 and carers. Peer Support Groups Later Life – This is a group of individuals who have experience of mental health difficulties and meet informally on a regular basis to offer each other support, advice and friendship. These groups provide a safe and supportive environment to support your ongoing recovery and well-being. Anyone over the age of 65 years who is receiving a service from GMMH and can make their own way is welcome to attend. Your local Group meets at: Holt Pavilion Café-Didsbury Park, Gillbrook Road, M20 6WH. Meets every other Wednesday 1pm – 2.30pm. Inspire Café-747 Stockport Road, Levenshulme, M19 3AR. Meets every other Friday 1pm – 2.30pm. The Wellbeing Centre-93 Church Lane, Harpurhey, M9 5BG. Meets every other Monday 12.30pm – 1.30pm. Brownley Green Methodist Church, Broadoak Road, M22 9WF. A village ethos in the heart of its neighbourhood for fitness, food, fun, dancing and shopping; raising self-esteem and giving everyone a sense of pride and self-worth.
