CHARITYJOB

Search for voluntary work on CharityJob, the UK’s busiest site for charity jobs and volunteering opportunities https://www.charityjob.co.uk/volunteer-jobs We are nearing the end of what's been a very quiet and difficult year for many. For the longest time in living memory, 's world-leading music venues and theatres have fallen silent. The city's many festivals - whether for food or for dance music - have been on pause, there have been no crowds dancing until dawn, and no glitter-strewn parades. The year-end doesn't necessarily spell a return to normality, but with the vaccine roll-out underway, the future looks a lot brighter than it has of late. With that in mind, we're turning our attentions to all the big events we're hoping are able to make their return to Manchester this year

It's not everyone's cup of tea - but with around 75,000 people flocking to each day of the weekend-long festival, Parklife certainly has its fans. The huge music festival, like many events this year, had to call off its usual party in the park. But it's now confirmed a 2021 return, with new dates while they plan for a celebration that's 'worth the wait'. The festival will now take place on September 11 and September 12, with New Order performing on the same site the night before Parklife starts. Parklife headliners are expected to be announced in the new year, and registration for tickets is open now: https://parklife.uk.com/

Sounds of the City Back to take over Bowl after cancelling this year's event, Sounds of the City will once again bring some of the world's biggest musicians to Manchester. Between June 30 and July 11, the likes of Lewis Capaldi, Foals, The Streets, and Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott will hit the stage. The outdoor summer gig series will also welcome Kaiser Chiefs with Razorlight, Crowded House, and DMA's. Hacienda Classical will make their annual homecoming show, performing orchestral versions of classic club records. Tickets are on sale now from Ticketmaster: https://www.ticketmaster.co.uk/sounds-of-the- city-tickets/

Manchester International Festival - or MIF - only takes place every other year, so was one of the few returning events that didn't have to pull its plans at the last minute. The huge arts festival is now getting ready for its 2021 return, where it will fill the city with music, theatre and dance. MIF 2021's first event has already been announced - The Walk will see a 3.5m puppet, 'Little Amal', walk through the city centre as a representation of displaced refugees. It's back between July 1 and July 18, with the full programme to be announced in the spring.

Manchester Pride's Big Weekend Manchester's annual LGBTQ+ celebration took its events online this year, with a massive virtual line-up. It's hoped it will be able to go full steam ahead in 2021, once again filling the Gay Village with live music and partying. The August bank holiday weekend usually sees thousands gather for the Pride parade through the city centre, before some of the biggest names in music take to the stage at Depot Mayfield. In 2019, the festival hosted Ariana Grande's return to the city - now it's a wait to see what the charity's plans are for the next installment.

Bluedot Bluedot brings together the worlds of science and music at Cheshire's Jodrell Bank, in a family-friendly fiesta spread over four days. It's a highlight of the country's festival calendar and right on 's doorstep. Bluedot pushed its festival back to July 2021 but the lineup is largely unchanged for now - that means headline performances from Bjork, Groove Armada and Metronomy beneath the awesome Lovell telescope. Tickets are on sale now with Ticketmaster: https://www.ticketmaster.co.uk/bluedot-festival- tickets/artist/

Book of Mormon It's the first bit of big theatre news we've had in a long time, with dozens of touring and local productions cancelled in 2020. The Book of Mormon is on its way back though, following a sold-out summer run of shows in 2019. The hit comedy musical is back at the Palace Theatre between December 7 2021 and January 2 2022 (though if last year's demand is repeated, they'll add more dates). Written by South Park creators, the story follows two missionaries sent from their in Salt Lake City to preach the Mormon religion to a remote Ugandan village. Tickets are on sale now from ATG Tickets: https://www.atgtickets.com/shows/the- book-of-mormon/palace-theatre-manchester/

Welcome to Carers Manchester South. We are a new team of Carers Locality Coordinators that were set up in January 2021. We are a partnership of Manchester Carers Forum, Together Dementia Support, Lifted Carers Centre, Connect Support and Wai Yin Society, who work together to provide services for unpaid carers in South Manchester. Our role is to develop relationships and work with GP practices, health and social care teams, voluntary organisations and community groups who are based, or work in South Manchester, to support them to become more carer friendly. Being carer friendly means having a better understanding of the experience and impact of being a carer, helping to identify hidden carers and providing carers with information to get the advice and support they need as quickly as possible. To help achieve this, we are offering short (30mins) Carer Awareness sessions. The sessions will be via Zoom and highlight the experiences and impact on people who provide unpaid care, as well as looking at how you can be carer friendly. If you would like to find out more about us, the Carer Awareness sessions and how to help support carers across South Manchester, then please contact us at [email protected] There is also a Carers Manchester Contact Point helpline that can provide people with information about carer support services. Wellbeing is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as “the state of being comfortable, healthy, or happy.” However, it is important to realise that wellbeing is a much broader concept than moment-to-moment happiness. Try and keep a routine - Plan how you’ll spend your time. It might help to write this down on paper and put it on the wall. •Try to follow your ordinary routine as much as possible. Get up at the same time as normal, follow your usual morning routines, and go to bed at your usual time. Set alarms to remind you of your new schedule if that helps. •If you aren’t happy with your usual routine, this might be a chance to do things differently. For example, you could go to bed earlier, spend more time cooking or do other things you don’t usually have time for.

•Think about how you’ll spend time by yourself at home. For example, plan activities to do on different days or habits you want to start or keep up. If you live with other people, it may help to do the following: •Agree on a household routine. Be Well

Be Well is here to help you find a way to live and feel well whatever twists and turns life brings. We can even help you get on top of work, housing, family and money worries. Be Well is here for people living in Manchester. We’re free to all, near to home and personal to you. Just ask your GP to put you in touch with us or call us on 0161 470 7120. Who Be Well is for It’s for anyone who lives in Manchester, or whose GP surgery is based there. You’ll come to us if you speak to your GP and think that you could be helped by ongoing support in the community, rather than just by a medical approach. How we help When you come to Be Well, you’ll be assessed by one of our trained coaches. They’ll talk to you about the help you need and the goals you want to achieve and set you up with the most appropriate person in the team to get you to where you want to be. You’ll then have regular one-to-one sessions– either face-to-face or over the phone. Together with your worker, you will talk through any changes in your life you would like to make; and ways to keep you motivated along your journey. Through coming to Be Well, you’ll feel motivated to make changes that stick and you’ll have learned some new ways of staying on the right track. It might be that you have one particular issue that’s central to you. Because Be Well is a partnership of local organisations we also have coaches who specialise in certain areas: •If your needs include issues with work – for instance if you need help to stay in work through physio or HR support, or you’re looking for a job – you’ll see a specialist coach with experience in that area.• If you need advice around welfare issues, housing, money management and so on, you’ll be able to access a telephone line run by Citizens’ Advice Manchester. Where we see you Our team are based all over Manchester in different places, so you can meet them at the doctors, in a community centre, or even a fire station. Who we are Be Well is a partnership is made up of The Big Life group, Pathways, Citizens’ Advice Manchester, One Manchester, Wythenshawe Community Housing Group and Southways and Northwards Housing. In addition, nine organisations host our team, to make sure that they’re available in convenient community locations. These are: Barlow Moor Community Association; Benchill Community Centre; BHA For Equality; Ethnic Health Forum; the Gaddum Centre; Healthy Me Healthy Communities; Mind; Old Moat Learning Hub; and the Tree of Life Centre, Mustard Tree, Wai Yin Society, LGBT Foundation, Football Club United of Manchester.

As lockdown measures change and ease, older people and their carers may need additional support to begin to feel comfortable and confident to visit the supermarket, attend medical appointments and generally reintroduce themselves back into public life safely.

Who can access the service? This free service is available to anyone over the age of 50 who lives in the City of Manchester. What is included in the service? Our Befriending Service will provide older people with up to eight hours of support to help them regain their confidence. How the eight hours are to be used will be up to the individual.

He/she may, for example, want to be accompanied to a nearby coffee shop or pub, want support to do a weekly grocery shop, need support to attend a hospital appointment or wish to attend a service at a place of worship.

The older person and the Befriender will agree how the visits will be structured to ensure the older person receives the kind of support they need. Is the service safe? Our staff all carry current DBS checks and are experienced in understanding and supporting the changing needs of older people. Staff will have undergone Public Health England’s Psychological First Aid Training to understand how to support older people through these challenging times. Visits will be provided in a socially distanced manner, with staff wearing relevant PPE and abiding by strict hygiene policies.

How do I access the service for myself or an older person I know?
