Jekyll and Hyde Plot, Themes, Context and key vocabulary booklet Name: 1 2 Plot Mr Utterson and his cousin Mr Enfield are out for a walk when they pass a strange-looking door Chapter 1 - (which we later learn is the entrance to Dr Jekyll's laboratory). Enfield recalls a story involving the Story of the door. In the early hours of one winter morning, he says, he saw a man trampling on a young girl. He Door chased the man and brought him back to the scene of the crime. (The reader later learns that the man is Mr Hyde.) A crowd gathered and, to avoid a scene, the man offered to pay the girl compensation. This was accepted, and he opened the door with a key and re-emerged with a large cheque. Utterson is very interested in the case and asks whether Enfield is certain Hyde used a key to open the door. Enfield is sure he did. That evening the lawyer, Utterson, is troubled by what he has heard. He takes the will of his friend Dr Chapter 2 - Jekyll from his safe. It contains a worrying instruction: in the event of Dr Jekyll's disappearance, all his Search for possessions are to go to a Mr Hyde. Mr Hyde Utterson decides to visit Dr Lanyon, an old friend of his and Dr Jekyll's. Lanyon has never heard of Hyde, and not seen Jekyll for ten years. That night Utterson has terrible nightmares. He starts watching the door (which belongs to Dr Jekyll's old laboratory) at all hours, and eventually sees Hyde unlocking it. -

A comparative semiotic analysis of The Picture of Dorian Gray (Oscar Wilde, 1891) and The Picture of Dorian Gray (Albert Lewin, 1945) Tomás Costal Criado UNED [email protected] ABSTRACT Oscar Wilde’s only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891), and its homonymous screen adaptation which dates back to the period immediately following WWII, The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945), directed by Albert Lewin, constitute an interesting example of semiotic transference from the page to the screen. As an audiovisual product, the film will allow the researcher to perceive the ways in which words become alive and add an enormous symbolic and significant wealth to the already abundant information that is conveyed through the connotative and allusive language of the text. This work tries to analyse meticulously a selection of key scenes taken from the film adaptation to later determine with the highest degree of accuracy possible what has been omitted, what has been added, and what has been deemed worthy of modification in the new version of Wilde’s work, where both Lewin and his cast of characters play the role of mediators. (Ph.D., English) Raising the Last Hope: British Romanticism and the Resurrection of the Dead, 1780-1830 Thesis directed by Professor Jeffrey N. Cox This dissertation examines the way the Christian doctrine of bodily resurrection surfaces in the literature of the British Romantic Movement, and investigates the ways literature recovers the politically subversive potential in theology. In the long eighteenth century, the orthodox Christian doctrine of bodily resurrection (historically, a doctrine that grounded believers’ resistance to state oppression) disappears from the Church of England’s theological and religious dialogues, replaced by a docile vision of disembodied life in heaven—an afterlife far more amenable to political power. However, the resurrection of the physical body resurfaces in literary works, where it can again carry a powerful resistance to the state. -

Abstract The Picture of Dorian Gray is the only novel published by Oscar Wilde. The novel is considered to be one of the most controversial literary works of the 19th century. In his novel Wilde uses his three main characters to reflect the battle of good and evil that exists in every man. The conflict of choosing between good and evil exists in every human with free will. This essay explores how the battle between good and evil is represented in the characters of Basil Hallward and Lord Henry Wotton in The Picture of Dorian Gray. It also discusses how Dorian Gray represents the everyman that deals with the battle of having to choose a side between good and evil. The Picture of Dorian Gray is a story about the spiritual journey of Dorian Gray, a beautiful young man tempted by the concept of eternal youth and beauty. Wilde uses personal experience and different literary themes to create his novel. In the novel there are elements of gothic fiction, aestheticism and the Faustian bargain. Faust and The Picture of Dorian Gray have many similarities, both in the structure of the stories, as well as in themes and plot. This essay looks at the similarities and differences between the corresponding representatives of good and evil, Lord Henry and Mephistopheles, Basil, the Lord and the three angels and Dorian Gray and Faust.
