Dear Olive Crest Supporters,

WOW. What a year it has been at Olive Crest and for me personally. I count it a privilege to serve as the Executive Director of Olive Crest. Daily I am filled with pride for the work going on at Olive Crest. The devoted staff at Olive Crest work tirelessly on behalf of children and families in our community. It has been a joy to serve alongside them and observing lives being transformed right before our eyes. After all, I think we would all agree every child deserves a strong family and a safe place to call home. We are grateful you have chosen to spend this evening with us in honoring the children in our area and helping to play a part in making their hopes and dreams come true after experiencing abuse and neglect.

So on behalf of the Olive Crest Staff, Olive Crest Families, and Olive Crest Children we say a collective THANK YOU for partnering together!

16 The Mackey Family Olive Crest Success Story

We are the Mackey family—Kevin, Lisa and our 4 kids Erin (12), Kirsten (9), Lindsey (7), and Nickolas (5). Our foster/adoption story started 4 years ago when we made the decision to get our foster license through Olive Crest. We wanted to stop the cycle of abuse/neglect for at least 1 child and to provide permanency for that child, whether through reunification with a healthy birth-parent or adoption.

In 2010 Nickolas came to our home at the age of 2. We were his 3rd foster home. Life for Nickolas had been very unstable as he had been in 2 other foster homes, 3 daycares and was visiting his Dad’s house on weekends. DSHS, his second foster family and his daycare were very concerned about his development as he was not thriving in this chaos.

When Nickolas came to our house, Lisa was home with him all day. Nickolas quickly attached to all of us and began to thrive on a more consistent routine. He learned that we were always here for him. We began to see huge growth in all areas of his development. We also began to establish a healthy rapport with his biological Dad. After a year of Nickolas being in our home as a foster child, his Dad relinquished his parental rights to us. 6 months later, we went before the judge on National Adoption Day and Nickolas officially became a Mackey!

There are a lot of other needs and great causes in the world, but it’s hard for us to imagine anything more impactful than helping a child exchange a life of neglect, abuse and chaos for a life of love and stability. Everyone can play their part. We don’t currently feel that we can take in another child but we have chosen to continue to stay involved through respite care, which allows other foster families to be able to take a vacation or just take a breather. All of our kids, now including Nickolas, love the experience of helping another child. We love continuing to play a small part in meeting a huge need. Being a part of a foster child’s life is the most rewarding experience we’ve ever had.
