  • Warburg Effect(S)—A Biographical Sketch of Otto Warburg and His Impacts on Tumor Metabolism Angela M
Otto Cancer & Metabolism (2016) 4:5 DOI 10.1186/s40170-016-0145-9 REVIEW Open Access Warburg effect(s)—a biographical sketch of Otto Warburg and his impacts on tumor metabolism Angela M. Otto Abstract Virtually everyone working in cancer research is familiar with the “Warburg effect”, i.e., anaerobic glycolysis in the presence of oxygen in tumor cells. However, few people nowadays are aware of what lead Otto Warburg to the discovery of this observation and how his other scientific contributions are seminal to our present knowledge of metabolic and energetic processes in cells. Since science is a human endeavor, and a scientist is imbedded in a network of social and academic contacts, it is worth taking a glimpse into the biography of Otto Warburg to illustrate some of these influences and the historical landmarks in his life. His creative and innovative thinking and his experimental virtuosity set the framework for his scientific achievements, which were pioneering not only for cancer research. Here, I shall allude to the prestigious family background in imperial Germany; his relationships to Einstein, Meyerhof, Krebs, and other Nobel and notable scientists; his innovative technical developments and their applications in the advancement of biomedical sciences, including the manometer, tissue slicing, and cell cultivation. The latter were experimental prerequisites for the first metabolic measurements with tumor cells in the 1920s. In the 1930s–1940s, he improved spectrophotometry for chemical analysis and developed the optical tests for measuring activities of glycolytic enzymes. Warburg’s reputation brought him invitations to the USA and contacts with the Rockefeller Foundation; he received the Nobel Prize in 1931.

Warburg: Founder of the United States Federal Reserve Prof. Richard A. Naclerio May 13, 2013 Paul Moritz Warburg The name Paul Moritz Warburg is synonymous with the founding of the Federal Reserve System. Warburg’s impact on American banking is a parallel to his family’s impact on European banking. The epic story of the Warburg family of European bankers can be traced back to the early 1500s when Simon von Cassel settled in the German Westphalia town of Warburg (originally founded by Charlemagne in 778 and was then known as Warburgum) and began the family’s quest for money and financial power. Although the Warburgs excelled in many other occupations throughout Europe, it was this lineage that produced some of the most successful bankers in the world. Blessed with sharp minds and good business sense, the generations of the Warburg clan gained seemingly boundless money and power.

PRESS RELEASE “Warburg-HIH Deutschland Logistik Invest” Fully Invested with c. 470 Million Euros . Acquisition of three assets, located near Duisburg (Rheinberg), Dortmund (Bergkamen) and Karlsruhe (Malsch), completes portfolio – fund is fully invested . The portfolio has a combined lettable area of around 100,000 square metres . Warburg-HIH Invest preparing to launch next logistics fund soon Hamburg, 29 June 2021 – Warburg-HIH Invest Real Estate GmbH (“Warburg-HIH Invest”) just completed the portfolio construction of its “Warburg-HIH Deutschland Logistik Invest” institutional fund by acquiring three logistics properties from Goodman that are DGNB-certified as green buildings and occupied on long- term leases. With this deal closed, the fund’s total equity in the amount of 280 million euros is now invested. Together with the debt capital, the fund has a total volume of approximately 470 million euros. The three latest additions bring the number of properties held by the vehicle up to 13, the average remaining lease term being around nine years. Due to keen demand among institutional investors, Warburg-HIH Invest is planning to launch a successor fund in the near future. The investment house is already in the process of screening suitable logistics developments. “The fund met with very lively interest among our investors. It only took us about one year to complete the fundraising process, and the equity is fully invested now. We offer our investors a diversified portfolio with stable earnings. Since demand on the investor side remains high, and since we have other interesting assets in our pipeline, we will launch another logistics real estate fund with a similar structure before long,” said Carsten Demmler, Managing Director at Warburg-HIH Invest.

Bioenergetic substrates and molecular intermediates required for building tumor biomass each day are derived from both aerobic glycolysis (Warburg effect) and lipid metabolism. Using tissue-isolated human breast cancer xenografts grown in nude rats, we determined that circulating systemic factors in the host and the Warburg effect, linoleic acid uptake/metabolism and growth signaling activities in the tumor are dynamically regulated, coordinated and integrated within circadian time structure over a 24-hour light/dark cycle by SCN-driven nocturnal pineal production of the anticancer hormone melatonin. Dim light at night (LAN)-induced melatonin suppression disrupts this circadian-regulated host/cancer balance among several important cancer preventative signaling mechanisms, leading to hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia in the host and runaway aerobic glycolysis, lipid signaling and proliferative activity in the tumor.

NARRATIVE REPORT ON LUXEMBOURG PART 1: NARRATIVE REPORT Rank: 6 of 133 Overview and background How Secretive? The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is ranked sixth in the 2020 Financial 55 Secrecy Index, based on a moderate secrecy score of 55 and a very large share of the market for offshore financial services, at over 12 per cent of the global total. Its position is largely unchanged since our 2015 and oderatey 0 to 25 2018 index. secretive Sandwiched between Germany, France and Belgium at the heart of Europe, this tiny constitutional monarchy has a population of just over six hundred thousand, allowing its enormous financial sector to achieve 25 to 50 a strong degree of ‘capture’ over the political system, media and culture of the entire Grand Duchy. Criticism of the sector, and discussion about its relationship to society, used to be exceedingly rare up until the LuxLeaks revelations in 2014, which helped to open up a wider public debate. 50 to 75 As in Switzerland and many other tax havens, the offshore financial sector has been underpinned by a history of political stability. This is bolstered by Luxembourg’s position at the geographical heart of Exceptionally secretive 75 to 100 Europe, catering largely to its immediate neighbours – and also its role as a founder member of the European Union.1 This latter factor has provided Luxembourg privileged access to the European market that other offshore centres cannot match; and Luxembourg also enjoys considerable political support from European economic élites who How big? 12.36% benefit from its offshore services.

MONDAY 03 JULY 2017: 09.00-10.30 Session: 1 Great Hall KEYNOTE LECTURE 2017: THE MEDITERRANEAN OTHER AND THE OTHER MEDITERRANEAN: PERSPECTIVE OF ALTERITY IN THE MIDDLE AGES (Language: English) Nikolas P. Jaspert, Historisches Seminar, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg DRAWING BOUNDARIES: INCLUSION AND EXCLUSION IN MEDIEVAL ISLAMIC SOCIETIES (Language: English) Eduardo Manzano Moreno, Instituto de Historia, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), Madrid Introduction: Hans-Werner Goetz, Historisches Seminar, Universität Hamburg Details: ‘The Mediterranean Other and the Other Mediterranean: Perspective of Alterity in the Middle Ages’: For many decades, the medieval Mediterranean has repeatedly been put to use in order to address, understand, or explain current issues. Lately, it tends to be seen either as an epitome of transcultural entanglements or - quite on the contrary - as an area of endemic religious conflict. In this paper, I would like to reflect on such readings of the Mediterranean and relate them to several approaches within a dynamic field of historical research referred to as ‘xenology’. I will therefore discuss different modalities of constructing self and otherness in the central and western Mediterranean during the High and Late Middle Ages. The multiple forms of interaction between politically dominant and subaltern religious communities or the conceptual challenges posed by trans-Mediterranean mobility are but two of the vibrant arenas in which alterity was necessarily both negotiated and formed during the medieval millennium. Otherness is however not reduced to the sphere of social and thus human relations. I will therefore also reflect on medieval societies’ dealings with the Mediterranean Sea as a physical and oftentimes alien space.

  • Warburg Gehörte Nicht in Diese Akademie.
E. H. Gombnch STYLE VERSUS HISTORY IN ENGLISH GOTHIC ARCHITECTURE PETER FERGUSSON, Architecture of Solitude.
