We’d like to think that in a highly partisan modern world, we actually live up to the credo: “We New York@Night Report, You Decide”. No segment of jazz or improvised music or avant garde or 4 whatever you call it is overlooked, since only as a full quilt can we keep out the cold of commercialism. The Recordings
Appendix: The Recordings These are the URLs of the original locations where I found the recordings used in this book. Those without a URL came from a cassette tape, LP or CD in my personal collection, or from now-defunct YouTube or Grooveshark web pages. I had many of the other recordings in my collection already, but searched for online sources to allow the reader to hear what I heard when writing the book. Naturally, these posted “videos” will disappear over time, although most of them then re- appear six months or a year later with a new URL. If you can’t find an alternate location, send me an e-mail and let me know. In the meantime, I have provided low-level mp3 files of the tracks that are not available or that I have modified in pitch or speed in private listening vaults where they can be heard. This way, the entire book can be verified by listening to the same re- cordings and works that I heard. For locations of these private sound vaults, please e-mail me and I will send you the links. They are not to be shared or downloaded, and the selections therein are only identified by their numbers from the complete list given below. Chapter I: 0001. The-Bridge-Presentat
THE BRIDGE a transatlantic network for jazz and creative music « A life without bridges, no stories to tell. » David Sylvian VISIONS If the 1001 musics of the jazz field were the first “world musics”, would it not be because they allowed multiple worlds to express and signify themselves, always passionately, always singularly? Through a musical art dedicated to individual invention and collective reinvention, to the most astonishing connections and sharings. In recent years, after a century of stories and legends during which each improviser, each group, each scene has grown more specific, many French and North American musicians have shown a renewed desire to confront the musical and sociomusical realities of their counterparts on the other side of the Atlantic. To develop true mutual knowledge, in interpersonal and cross-cultural relationships that can develop over the long term, beyond a creation, a concert or a record. The Bridge forms a network of exchanges, production and dissemination, recreating the conditions for this perennial sharing: a transatlantic bridge that French and North American musicians regularly cross, in both directions and in the context of cooperative projects. This bridge between the worlds of music develops an alternative mode of circulation, thanks to tours designed as ethnographic journeys, where one explores a territory (in France or in Chicago and the Midwest) rather than travels relentlessly and thoughtlessly. Journeys in which each musician is given the time and space to resonate with the environment in which his partners evolve. On site and in context, The Bridge collaborates with all kinds of structures. This alternative model of cooperation, inspired by what has always made jazz an art of encounters and relationships – what is now called “in-person” – brings together clubs and festivals, grassroot organizations and cultural centers, music schools and universities on both continents, in a network where human adventures are woven and woven that exceed all expectations. -

March 2011 | No. 107 Your FREE Guide to the NYC Jazz Scene nycjazzrecord.com J blues in the blood a m u e s l b m l e o o r d Johnny Mandel • Elliott Sharp • CAP Records • Event Calendar In his play Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare wrote, “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” It is a lovely sentiment but one with which we agree only partially. So with that introduction, we are pleased to announce that as of this issue, the gazette formerly known as AllAboutJazz-New York will now be called The New York City Jazz Record. It is a change that comes on the heels of our separation New York@Night last summer from the AllAboutJazz.com website. To emphasize that split, we felt 4 it was time to come out, as it were, with our own unique identity. So in that sense, a name is very important. But, echoing Shakespeare’s idea, the change in name Interview: Johnny Mandel will have no impact whatsoever on our continuing mission to explore new worlds 6 by Marcia Hillman and new civilizations...oh wait, wrong mission...to support the New York City and international jazz communities. History of Jazz Tenor Saxophone Black Artists
HISTORY OF JAZZ TENOR SAXOPHONE BLACK ARTISTS 1940 – 1944 SIMPLIFIED EDITION INTRODUCTION UPDATE SIMPLIFIED EDITION I have decided not to put on internet the ‘red’ Volume 3 in my Jazz Solography series on “The History of Jazz Tenor Saxophone – Black Artists 1940 – 1944”. Quite a lot of the main performers already have their own Jazz Archeology files. This volume will only have the remainders, and also auxiliary material like status reports, chronology, summing ups, statistics, etc. are removed, to appear later in another context. This will give better focus on the many good artists who nevertheless not belong to the most important ones. Jan Evensmo June 22, 2015 INTRODUCTION ORIGINAL EDITION What is there to say? That the period 1940 - 1944 is a most exciting one, presenting the tenorsax giants of the swing era in their prime, while at the same time introducing the young, talented modern innovators. That this is the last volume with no doubt about the contents, we know what is jazz and what is not. Later it will not be that easy! That the recording activities grow decade by decade, thus this volume is substantially thicker than the previous ones. Just wait until Vol. 4 appears ... That the existence of the numerous AFRS programs partly compensates for the unfortunate recording ban of 1943. That there must be a lot of material around not yet generally available and thus not listed in this book. Please help building up our jazz knowledge base, and share your treasures with the rest of us. That we should remember and be eternally grateful to the late Jerry Newman, whose recording activities at Minton's and Monroe's have given us valuable insight into the developments of modern jazz. -
