NOTES PROLOGUE 1. [Joseph Green] An Eclogue Sacred to the Memory of the Rev. Dr. Jonathan Mayhew (Boston, 1766), p. 8. 2. MHS Colls., LXXIV (1918), xxiv. See the many references to JM in Adams Papers and Adams Works. For the comparison of JM with Webster, see the Channing Hall lecture by Andrew P. MARTHA'S VINEYARD 1. Practical Discourses, p. 61. 2. See the letters of Thomas Mayhew in MHS Colls., XXXVII (1865), 30-33. Nearly all the sources for the early history of Martha's Vineyard have been conveniently assembled at the MHS in Documents Relating to Marthas Vineyard, 1600-1899; 18 vol- umes with an Index; Transcripts made by Charles E. Banks. These transcripts were used by Banks in writing The History of Martha's Vineyard (vols. I, II, Boston, 1911; vol. Ill, Edgartown, Mass., 1925), one of the most complete and accurate local histories ever written. On details of Vineyard history, I generally follow Banks's Documents and History, with additional documentation as noted. A few documents have come to light since Banks did his work. These have been used in Warner F. Gookin, Capawack alias Mar- tha's Vineyard (Edgartown, Mass., 1947). 3. Ida M. Wightman, The Mayhew Manor of Tisbury (Balti- more, 1921), is helpful in understanding feudal problems on the Vineyard. 4. A History of the Expansion of Christianity, III (New York, 1939), 218. 5.
