MARTHA'S VINEYARD 1. Practical Discourses, p. 61. 2. See the letters of Thomas Mayhew in MHS Colls., XXXVII (1865), 30-33. Nearly all the sources for the early history of Martha's Vineyard have been conveniently assembled at the MHS in Documents Relating to Marthas Vineyard, 1600-1899; 18 vol- umes with an Index; Transcripts made by Charles E. Banks. These transcripts were used by Banks in writing The History of Martha's Vineyard (vols. I, II, Boston, 1911; vol. Ill, Edgartown, Mass., 1925), one of the most complete and accurate local histories ever written. On details of Vineyard history, I generally follow Banks's Documents and History, with additional documentation as noted. A few documents have come to light since Banks did his work. These have been used in Warner F. Gookin, Capawack alias Mar- tha's Vineyard (Edgartown, Mass., 1947). 3. Ida M. Wightman, The Mayhew Manor of Tisbury (Balti- more, 1921), is helpful in understanding feudal problems on the Vineyard. 4. A History of the Expansion of Christianity, III (New York, 1939), 218. 5.
